Overall score 5/5: This is an enthralling and captivating mystery set in the backdrop of urban fantasy with supernatural elements. The story is driven by a compelling female lead, Hime, who is determined to become a doctor like her mother when a mysterious girl is placed in their care.
Style score 5/5: The writing style is beautifully crafted, immersing readers in the atmospheric world of Kaamizu, Japan. The author expertly uses first-person narrative from Hime's perspective to weave together elements of mystery and fantasy, keeping the pacing smooth and the descriptions vivid.
Story score 5/5: The combination of supernatural elements and a gripping mystery surrounding Jane Doe's condition creates a unique and engaging storyline. Hime, the protagonist, is a relatable and determined young woman who shows immense growth throughout the story. Her passion for becoming a doctor like her mother and her curiosity about Jane Doe's condition makes her a compelling lead.
In conclusion, Wilted Rose is a masterfully written mystery by an accomplished author with a touch of urban fantasy and a strong - MeatyOwlLegsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Character/style: The characters come alive from the very start and as you wind your way through the normalcy of a young girl and her mother, who is a doctor, living in a quaint small town in Japan, you begin to realize that some of the regular folks being able to manipulate water is just a hint of what's to come, and the vast stretches of imagination, wonder, thrills, fright, as well as very deep and touching human emotions throughout, do not disappoint!
Story: I wouldn't even call it slow if you settle into the fact that it takes its time to immerse you in Hime's everyday life. There is so much normalcy to her routines that the strange happenings here and there stand out more. It doesn't have any big battle scenes or anything like that but it's the kind of story that doesn't need it at all.
Grammer: I think it's pretty much perfect or at least I didn't notice anything. The writing style is very immersive so I don't think anything would stand out to me anyway and probably will not for you either.
It's all around a fantastic read and a nice breath of fresh air. It's one of the more original things I've read so far and it has me anxious to keep reading to solve the unanswered questions. - One-eyed MikeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is strangely satisfying, and I've been following it avidly.
On the surface, it is the story of a mysterious young girl who turns up one day. She can't remember, can't talk and has multiple health and mental issues. Underneath, it's intriguing, and twines together different strands.
The mysterious teenager is not even the MC. To date, the main viewpoint has been from the daughter of the hospital doctor. She has her own problems, and her mother does too. There's a spectrum of other characters all orbiting each other.
At Chapter 12, there's been good character development, and hints at underlying stories that we haven't heard yet - a sense of greater depths yet to be revealed.
To add interest, the background is a version of Japanese society, with a small dose of magic added. But NO, NO, IT'S OK - anime-haters, like me, can safely read this without getting sick. The Japanese bit is understated, and avoids all the stereotypes. It's occasional background colour, not invasive.
I've become attached to this story, and I have no hesitation in recommending it - StarswornAdminRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I wasn't 100% sure what to expect when I agreed to review this fiction, but I can safely say that I was totally blown away. Wilted Rose is a major deviation from some of the more action-forward fictions here, and after reading I can say confidently that's a good thing.
Style - The writing is clean and offers a unique sense of voice as we approach each character. No two feel the same, and the author effectively blends different lengths and styles of sentences to keep the reader engaged. It's also an effective demonstration of "showing" and not "telling" by getting the readers immersed into the world without long bouts of exposition.
Story - The story doesn't move too fast or too slow, instead offering a consistently building suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I expected that I woudl read this fiction in several chunks, and instead skipped my entire lunch break because I was enthralled. I'm left wanting more!
Grammar - Not a lot to say here other than that the author has clearly taken time to edit and revise, or is just really stinking good at writing. If there were spelling or grammar errors, they didn't jump off the page at me or impact my enjoyment of the prose.
Characters - Each character feels relatable and distinctly human. This (so far) doesn't read to me as a story of a hero or a villain, but of real people interacting with one another in a genuine and organic way. Although at a personal level I have little in common with Hime, her motivations and character feel absolutely in line with what they should be, well-crafted by the author.
Again, I didn't know exactly what to expect as I opened Chapter 1, but I can say now that I'm caught up I'm aching for more. If you're looking for an expertly crafted fiction that combines suspense and phenomenal characterization, this is the story for you.
If you're not? Read it anyway. You won't regret it. - mneueRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So, this is the good stuff. For those out there looking for a slow burn mystery with an interesting setting, then look no further than here. Note that this review is coming in at what's available on RR, which is more than enough to keep on your radar.
Style Score (5/5): The story follows Hime, a young girl in the adorable Japanese village of Kaamizu, and it does it from her child-like perspective to the tee. Even though there's sharper, more adult content as she slowly but surely uncovers the greater mystery around the enigmatic "Rose", it is filtered through her innocent, naive eyes, and this comes through the prose in a way that is as interesting as it is satisfying.
Story Score (5/5): Even with what is presented thus far, there's a lot to be unpacked with Hime and what is really happening beneath the otherwise quaint Kaamizu. In addition to the girl with no name who has disrupted her otherwise quiet life, there's a backdrop of "magic users" in this setting that everyone is familiar with. Each layer revealed has thus led to more interesting questions that get explored later. Bear in mind, this is a slow burn, so expect to be here for the long haul.
Grammar Score (5/5): No mistakes. Or, if there's anything, they are minimal, at best.
Character Score (5/5): Being the main POV, Hime clearly takes the show, but she is supported by a cast of family and friends that are as diverse as they are vibrant. From her tactiturn mother to the group of frienda she'll play with during every SoL pause, you definitely feel as if this scenic town was based on real world experience, and I cannot recommend that enough. - SunnyShimRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5There's only been 7 chapters released as of this review so this isn't comprehensive and is mostly a first impressions of the start of this story.
This story definitely seems to be going for the slower pacing route as there hasn't been too much revealed as of yet and the concumstances of the mysterious girl is still quite mysterious.
I personally find the mystery of trying to find out who or where she came from quite compelling but I truly don't know what direction the story is trying to go in as of yet.
As I read through the first few chapters, I almost noticed no grammatical mistakes at all, which is quite rare as I always look for them when I happen to be reading so that's a good sign.
The only small complaint one may have is that the first few chapters may seem too mundane or Slice of life like so it may feel a bit slow but the mystery is probably going to take over more as the story progresses.
This story is definitely going to be something I'll be keeping an eye on. I'm not sure if it's going to be as great as the other reviewers who've purchased and read the full book have said but I'm optimistic with what I've seen so far. - VellinOnTopRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0all u need to know its good. characters are written well, the world is cool, the plot is cool, yeah
im just gonna type this out so i get to the annoying word count thats needed for such a simple review. read the story while imagining the scenes in ur head - Zoro50Royal Road★★★★ 4.0An interesting mystery in a world that is much like our own and yet is not. On the whole it has been a fun read watching Rose and Hime interact and try and figure out how to relate to each other. Some good drama, a cop on the hunt and a coming of age drama wrapped into one.
Only a few criticisms. First be the awkward prose. The story itself talks about how Rose writes like a foreigner with a high degree of literacy. This story feels the same.
The other would be the annoying issue of the characters living in a magic world but never seeing magic done. Also it’s the year 2700 something and technology is pretty much the same as in the modern world.
Overall it’s been a good distraction and I look forward to seeing where it goes from here.
