- your_sweetpeaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This wasn't a fiction I expected to love as much as I do, not by a long shot, but When Immortality Meets Masochism has really blown me away in that regard.
When talking about fiction, I think there are two notable categories to me: Fiction that tries to be deep, and fiction that tries to be fun. WIMM 100% falls into the latter and does one of the best jobs of it I've seen I've seen in ages. You're essentially following a hilarious lovestruck psychopathic puppy dog in a setting that allows you to enjoy the experience completely rather than giving you reason to think much about the morality of her actions and ruin the humor.
Good damn work, author. Thanks for the story. - EpicGnome23Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story has good things in spades. A likeable main charater, a supernatural world, excessive violence. But wait there's more; if you order now you'll recieve not one but two excessive violences for the price of one!
Apparently these reviews need to be at least fifty words long, so I am really just padding for time to submit this review. - Failedspark2Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Imagine everyone in your class who you've known for probably years dying one by one, in very horrifying and painfully deaths. Having to hear their gut wrenching screams in your sleep because of the games of your undying teacher. Now imagine having just watched your friend die and next to u some girl is almost dying of laughter and pretty much rooting for the monster that just killed your friend.
That girl is the mc, and because of that girl, this story is more comedy than horror. I have not yet laughed as loud as I have at random people dying than in this story... I mean at Katie's comments about those people dying.
Katie pretty much paints over all the suffering and horrors and creates a new perspective, Katie's perspective. And Katie's perspective is very interesting, far more interesting than those of normal people. Katie and the normals are like heaven and hell. Because for Katie hell would be heaven. Because any type of suffering is a pleasure to her. This and the setting would already make a great original concept.
But immortality is thrown in the mix and normally I would dislike immortality since it somehow always makes certain achievements for the character mean less. That's not the case here. This is where this story shines, her immortality gives her infinite room to be Katie. To do whatever the duck she wants.
Her personality is as much interesting as it is funny and badass. And her personality coupled with Caitlyn's creates a fascinating dilemma. And a very enjoyable relationship. Since Caitlyn doesn't like the actual Katie. And is trying to get Katie back on the right path, a path she left the second the games started.
She was normal before but now she likes suffering in all of its magnificent forms. Be it her own or that of others, mental or physical. The only thing that's fighting back is Caitlyn which is the only thing other than the suffering that actually matters to her. She is fighting against just giving in or listening to the person she loves. So - I_DunnoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This book really hit the spot. Unlike some other books with mc's hiding their immortality, our dear Katie embraces it and so much more.
Warning, be going into this with the knowledge that you're going to see very good descriptions of gore at almost every point in the story (I personally loved it, but some people might not)
Hopefully, by the time you are reading this, there will be more chapters for you to enjoy.
Miss you, caitlin. - Ronny766Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style: Love that we can hear the thoughts of the other characters. It adds more to the story. Written like a good novel.
Story: Mystery + Action + Comedy. I love the action parts. They aren't strung out and they aren't boring either. The comedy always makes me smile and laugh. The mystery of their situation really keeps me going. This isn't some basic survival story, there's a mysterious purpose of the antagonist (also the origin of the main character) and a main character that throws the entire thing off the cliche.
Grammar: Great. There's only minor issues that doesn't affect anything.
Character: Katie. Do I have to say anything more? XD. I do? Well here I go. Badass mixed with the perfect amount of comedy. Her OPness isn't a bore since she's a masochist and there are supernatural forces that are (somewhat) able to contend with her. In addition, she still hasn't actually figured out how to defeat Mr.Isaac or any of the other supernatural forces as a matter of fact. Of course, she has the ability to blow them away if she goes on a determined journey but who has time for that?
The other characters are great too! Caitlin has great character development and is someone who pairs well with Katie (like a foil). Mr.Isaac (or whatever being is controlling him) does a good job of keeping up the mystery and suspense.
Love the new title btw. - StotinRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Good book with incredibly twisted MC and so if you like messed up characters, toms of gore, and copious amounts of masochism come right on in! So far it is mainly centering around ridiculous supernatural stuff and the MC who likes shoving pens in her hands. Also due warning is that MC is highly sadistic and likes seeing people suffer. That is goooood.
This review was posted to validate the ego of one KR043 as posted at the end of chapter 37 - elyielRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0If you are not bothered by violence or gore, I can only recommend this story.
Despite starting with scifi elements in the prologue chapters the story itself takes place in an urban fantasy setting, without much scifi elements actually playing a part in the story. So, even if, like me, you aren't the biggest fan of scifi, I still recommend you give the story a shot.
The story in on itself is well thought out and doesn't repeat itself or stand still for too long. So far I haven't come upon a single filler chapter. After the first major arc the world and the story really opens up and shows a lot more of the world building, which is great.
The best part about the story, for me, are the characters. There are no one-dimensional villains or heroes. Instead, all major characters are well fleshed out with motives and thoughts of their own. The main character is great and amusing even by herself.
Despite all the gore and violence the story isn't particularly dark since we see most of the unfolding events through the eyes of a somewhat psychopathic main character.
The grammar is for the most part great, with minor issues at keeping the story in the correct tense. Has and Had, Is and Were are occasionally used at the wrong places, though this happens less frequently the farther into the story you get, and doesn't really disturb the reading flow.
Overall a great story, and I'm looking forward to more chapters. - RanzbartRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I love this Fiction.
It does not have flashy writing, nor does it need to. I can immerse myself in there when my urges scream at me and keep the beast in my head.
Definitely not suited for everyone, but i specifically recommend it to fellow psycho-/sociipaths who wish to be part of society and balance the masking out in reading. - WakisRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Did not expect a horror story, but its ok a horror story
Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word Word - DISTANT ECHORoyal Road★★ 2.0All right. I gave this story a good shot. I really did. I found that while the concept was a really good one, the execution left a bit to be desired. The characters are shallow, the odd twists and turns as they completely change who they are in a split second left me scratching my head.
The piece that did it in for me to set this one down was the flippant break of the fourth wall that was so completely out of place, it hurt. This work has a lot of potential, especially with the framing of the story. Best of luck to you, author. Thank you for putting your work out there and I can tell that you're having fun writing it. It just wasn't for me.
