- OurotheborosRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This series manages to start in the style of a slow burn academy, and yet the intellectual approach to the system and turns the story takes make for a read that is well worth the time. The character manages to grow from his mistakes, and yet there continues to be a strong sense of tension. I loved getting sucked in and I think you will too.
- irakli2692Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Worldbuilding is interesting and you get engaged in story and world's events easily.
Structure or setting of Magic(power of tethered) is just what I like. There is delicate balance in structure and openness. Its defined enough that its not soft magic(Characters pulling out magic from nowhere) and open enough for development and creativity. Its work is well defined, with limits and logic of advancing in power.
Main character is a bit difficult to relate at the beginning. Because he has flaws and not all flaws are "benign" (it doesn't make you like or relate him more) but it is closer to reality then any other character in any story I've read. But don't worry, there is good character development. Not all flaws go away but there is definitely growth.
I really like side characters 😀😀. They are interesting in their own ways 🙂.
I like how author writes. There is no info dump, you are being let in the world and character's past and events slowly, alongside characters, with some hints and impressions first. - GodSlayer123Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5Read all 185 chapters at time of review and while the first 50 or so chapters are slow going the speed ramps up rather quickly afterwards a minor complaint would be the proper signaling of interludes. Cold benefit from having chapter names so that the slow burn may be more easily skipped since if you read at least every other chapter or so it's possible to keep up with the plot.
- QwouRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I typically read books around 200 pages and if they haven't had any issues with submission so congratulations on hitting that milestone.
This novel, at this point, is a good take on an enjoyable genre to read. It's slow paced and the protagonists is inherantly special but struggles in a lot of ways. I genuinely hope he doesn't become amazing at everything and is genuinely shit in a lot of ways but special in others.
So yea I'd you want that magic world stuff have a read.
(No hints of romance so far, no idea if there will be any or if it will be good.(I don't typically like most romance unless it's good like housewirch or gayshit lmao :p)) - FlamingFalconRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0The story is glacial in pace. Not that that is a bad thing, allows proper exploration of characters, themes and magic. Possible creation of a proper in depth story full of vivid characters, motivations, emotional plot twists and interest in magic.
But the pacing feels more like padding than a story. Why? Each discovery feels disjointed, the large events feel forced and the story goes from glacial to light speed when something big happens just because. All big changes feel like they get pulled out of nowhere despite all the time in the time with the pacing to drip it here and there or at least make the responses fit.
We spend chapter upon chapter in the perspective of the queen building political intrigue only for nothing to come of the information learned in those chapters. Where they just sit and watch it happen and do nothing.
We spend chapter upon chapter watching him toy with his tether and rituals only for the actual changes come from the gremlin.
Basically it has all these ways to possibly naturally introduce conflict/development but ultimately have it come through in the same shallow way it would without all the exploration. Which just devalues the exploration.
Basically the story offers the illusion of depth. But never comes through on it’s promise.
Which quite frankly is disappointing since the relationships between the mc/friends and instructors was fun. The magic system had potential and the political turmoil in the background had many ways to develop the ideas and create something great.
edit; I kinda get the weirdness now. In hindsight it seems like it was a rush to get through planned plot points to get to a new area to explore earlier. It’s got better again now we are exploring the “worlds” part of the story more and it’s getting more focused on what the story does well. (Increased from 3-4). Tho the introduction of a system type magic does make it feel a lot more generic than previously. - deus vultRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0there were 30 chapters before he was able to manipulate space. the writing isn't good enough to cover that, but it's decent enough for a read. the writing is okay, but it is slow as hell. as for what my impression is from this story, it feels like harry potter inspired. except that instead of solving mysteries with his friends he practices space manipulation. by himself, then hangs out with his friends.
- The-Anti-AkumaRoyal Road★★★ 2.5I understand slow burn, but this is insane.. The first few chapters felt like story, but it feels like nearly nothing of note has happened in like the last like 13 chapters.
I've read a lot of slow burn novels, and they take a while to get to places, but they're still entertaining all the while.. This story just feels like a lot of nothing is happening... I'm sure something will happen eventually, but i'm not sure I can get myself to that point. - Platypus9d8Royal Road★★ 2.0Since writing my previous review, the story has progressed a considerable amount. I've also progressed more in my views of the story.
The story so far has been incredibly, almost painfully, slow-paced. This is not a detraction from the story, Royal Road allows for this sort of unorthodox story telling. It gives the author time to flesh out his characters, world, magic system, and politics. However, that does not change the fact that this is one of the most difficult stories I've read on this site. The magic system is incredibly complex, which isn't helped by all the other characters in the story either purposely witholding information from the MC or just straight up not understanding the system outside of vague notions of power and control. This problem is compounded by the fact that the MC along with the main cast are making breakthroughs in techniques and training exercises not discovered by a centuries old society and world. There are many other flaws in how this is written, but if I were to sum it up, it feels incredibly frustrating.
That is how I would describe the story in general, incredibly frustrating. Major plot beats occur almost at random, alternate POVs give us glimpses of larger geopolitical stuff with almost no backstory or exposition outside of the current context, characters act in opaque and seemingly random ways to maintain the air of mystery and intrigue around certain topics the author is trying to set up. All this feels like someone has offered you a four course meal at their house, only for you to show up and they serve grocery store size samples for six hours before you get to the main course. They might've had an excellent plan for how all the little samples come together to reveal a splendid and awe-inspiring meal, but most sane people will have left by the fourth hour of samples.
Finally, my last complaint can only be explained by talking about some major spoilers.
At this point in the story Ranvir, our protagonist, has discovered new ways - BugiwiduRoyal Road★★ 1.5Nothing happened, the protagonist still can't do shit, everyone is better than him, there's a cliche waifu that helps him get stronger, the characters are barely developped, 50 chapters and nothing of note happened.
Be warned, this is a slooooooow burn with terrible grammar. The author doesn't give a fuck about the reviews or comments, everyone is complaining about the same stuff and he never bothered to change anything. - BeinjaBlueRoyal Road★ 0.5The mc is the most insufferable and wimpy mc I have seen outside of novels that play into those aspects. The mc is given a cheat sheet but doesn't read it past the first couple pages. He has major self control issues and for some reason he is incredibly weak. He hammered out stuff on metal and that takes strength but somehow he is so out of shape he might as well be a lazy noble. This novel had great potential from the summary but I am seeing major issues already. The book has really bad grammar and refuses to fix them. Dont waste your time with this trash. I'd give it 0/5 if I could
