- 1Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0After being thrust into a different world, twice, you would think that things are going to calm down for the main character. However, the new world is surprisingly dangerous, and she would be dead right now if it weren't for her class, Artificer. Unfortunately, she doesn't understand how to use it, and her entire system is glitching horrendously. Hopefully, with her trusty sidekick, a tiny kraken possessed by a floating pirate, she can stay out of trouble, and create her own guild.
- Banner CaygeonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story starts off like many do, with a young adult being teleported into another world...but that's about where the similarities end. Our MC Nova is in an almost purgatory of sorts before being teleported to yet another world. There we slowly get little drips and drabs of a massive new world, and get to explore it first hand.
Grammar: There was nothing jarring or noticeably amiss here. The author did an excellent job of formatting and editing. Full marks.
Style Score: The writing is fluid, easy to read and doesn't get bogged down with fluffy language or trying to be something it's not. The author writes this as the MC Nova might think it and the story is stronger for it. A few times there are lines and paragraphs that could be trimmed up but it's all very enjoyable to read.
Character Score: The author has introduced several characters, Mathius, Briny, Jace, Nova, Miko, Guildmaster etc, and each introduction is done extremely well. It's easy for a story to have a character dump and then the reader loses track of everything. Each character in WG is distinct, (they even have great and memorable names!) and released in succession allowing us to digest them. The only drawback I can think of, is it would be nice to have a few more character building moments with Nova. At the very beginning we can see likes to help people, but then she's a bit smarmy with Mathius for quite some time and that sort of takes over. Even something as simple as asking mathius a few questions that an empathetic person might ask. Example: in one scene Mathius mentions his mother, and it would be a great chance for her to ask about her out of kindness. (and then possibly use that moment to discuss their relative parent situations.) It's not a big knock and could be fixed with some of the info reveals being moved around and a few choice moments with the MC. Otherwise, Nova is clever, precocious, and a genuinely interesting character. The supporting case is also really interesting.
Story Score: Th - BullerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Title doesn't make sense to you? Too bad.
I couldn't say I disliked reading through this fic. It has some fun parts with the main character showing some funnier criticism of the standard worlds that one is normally thrown into in this genre. Expereince helps everybody I suppose and this story shows that in full force. With a great style as well, it's a solid 5/5 - CKJ5Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story 5/5: The Wayfarer’s Guild is a portal / LitRPG that starts at a breakneck speed and doesn’t let up. Before coming to RR, I didn’t have much experience with LItRPG, but I am starting to get a feel for the tropes and beats of the genre. The Wayfarer’s Guild seems to be doing a good job subverting the ones I am aware of and probably the ones I am unaware of also. I also like that the world is glitching. That unique problem, along with the standard portal issues, makes this story feel fresh.
Style 5/5: The Wayfarer’s Guild is a well-written, third-person story. One of the things I do not enjoy so much about LitRPGs is the stat screens, but the way the author handled them in the Wayfarer’s Guild was brilliant, and I found myself looking to what new information we might learn from them as they appear.
Grammar 5/5: I did not find any errors in the first five chapters, so I just stopped looking for them.
Character 5/5: The characters, all in all, are great. I seem to enjoy the side characters more than the MC. It is not a knock on Nova, but rather it is high praise for the supporting cast.
Overall 5/5: The Wayfarer’s Guild is a fast-paced story with the comfort of a standard portal, LitRPG, while having a unique go at the genre. It is fun and light-hearted with great characters and solid writing. If any combination of those things sounds good to you, then I suggest giving it a go. - Drew RoystonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story kicks off with a traditional set up of the MC being transported to another world. But, things quickly move into very original territory from there. They are trying help someone but, on the basis that no good deed goes unpunished, things go south from there. You have a glitching system, random attacks, and several random guys that just won’t leave the MC alone.
Oh, and there is a very cute side kick that comes along. I won’t spoil it but you are going to love them.
It’s all chaotic at the start, but things soon settle down to allow you find your bearings. The MC quickly gets a purpose and you want them to succeed.
This is well written story. The author understands dialogue, action, characters, pacing and all that good technical stuff. It makes it a smooth pleasure to read. I chewed through all that was available in one sitting
I’m reviewing this at at relatively early stage, but it’s safe to say that this is going to be an absolutely cracking (kraken-ing?) story.
Detailed scores
Style: So much to love in the style. Good, vivid dialogue. Evocative descriptions. Well written, thrilling fight scenes. Really good. The only reason I took half a notch off was because it jumps around a lot at the start which makes it a little hard to follow. That might put some people off. Having said that, it quickly settles down
Story: This story has it all. Action, adventure, tugging at the heart strings. You absolutely have to know what is going to happen next.
Grammar: Nothing here that distracts. Far better than most of the stories on this site. Some small minor typos (and I think some missing commas, but I'm not sure...), but nothing important
Character: Absolutely fantastic. I always look at the side characters rather than the MC when I think about how good an author is at writing character All of the supporting characters here are distinct, even throwaway, temporary characters like the passing guards. Really well done. - Edge ValmondRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style:
I do not grade style. One person can think it is great, another can think it is the worst. One person can find something wrong with it, another can say it is perfectly fine. Though, if I have to give something. Know it is in third person PoV, and easy to follow.
Grammar:
Honestly, not seeing anything wrong. Seems to check out, base wise. Ya know, short sentences and whatnot. I ain’t gonna knock off points for this, since it correct. To be fair, someone else might find something wrong, but I am a pretty easy person.
Story Score:
This isn’t a typical LitRPG, I can say this for sure. As it starts off more in an unsettling way, meeting some girl I believe it was. Who became the reason for Nova getting transported to a weird plain. Where she meets a pirate, and ends up with a strange thing. As in, she wasn’t chosen, she chose to be there. I suppose that is a reverse. Though, what really makes this stand out more. Is that, there is actually a story. On top of her bad life, parents gone. This while seeming more of an escapism, there is actually a grand adventure. From what I can tell from my limited knowledge, this could be a story venturing multiple worlds. This goes into Nova making a deal in joining a guild, and spotting out some things to her advantage. It goes into classes, mana crystals, rank, quests, and other smaller things you’d find in the genre. Some funny moments as well, and also looks to have some lore about gods? Could be wrong about that, still would be an interesting turn if so. Anyway, I will leave it at there as to not spoil anything.
Character Score:
Nova is a girl, who encounters someone in trouble it looks like. Making a regretful decision it seems. She ends up being transported, where she eventually meets the one who summoned her. However, it is viewed as she chose to go there. Since, she wants to help the person in trouble. She appears to be more of a character, that is willing to do things. At the same time, wanting to escape her reality. Jo - ObstinateFalconRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style-
Style is subjective, but I liked this one. I don't read a lot of system novels anymore but the unique path of having a broken system broke the mold of what is an overdone trope.
Story-
This novel sets a good premise, and although the story is still in its baby stages, its enough to show that the author has a clear path of where the story is supposed to go, and that path is one full of interesting and fun stuff! A story that focuses on building a guild right out of the gate is something you rarely, if ever, see.
Grammar-
I dont see anything wrong, so I'll keep this part succint as that usually means it's good. The first chapter(maybe second too) had some clunkiness due to having a but too much full stops, disturbing the flow, though not glaringly. But this was not the case for the later chapters, the flow was improved visibly.
Character-
This is where the story shines and stands out, the characters introduced so far feel alive and different from each other. I like Jace a lot. Their quips and antics are noticeable and forms a beauty of contrast in characters. Overall, I'm really liking it so far, give it a read! - Sam TolanRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is something rather interesting to me. I have a love/hate relationship toward litrpg in general and lean more gamelit at best at both writing and reading. As such it is a strange thing to find a litrpg I truly enjoyed to read and look forward to.
I love portal fantasy and always have, so that helped smooth out some of my initial hesitation to try this.
Each part of the story took traditional elements of both litrpg and portal fantasy and twisted them into something new. There are consequences for actions (good or bad) and I love that. It is something that is rarely seen in stories, at least webserials, and for me is a breath of fresh air. There are problems one after the other and things are chaotic but very fun to read.
The story is unbelievably well-written. From the way dialogue and characters are written and fleshed out, to the action and pacing, everything felt very natural to read. The story is also very smooth to read with nothing taking me out of it. This allowed me to finish it quickly and left me hungry for more.
The story is very human. I know that sounds odd but everything feels alive to me. From the characters to the imagery, I feel like I am within this world and seeing the story unfold beside everyone.
I love guilds and faction building (along with kingdom building and exploration) so all of this is perfect for niche loves of mine.
The current review is at a early stage, just the beginning in many ways. However, I genuinely feel this will have a special place for many on Royal Road and wherever the author takes it from here. - a.c.rockatanskyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm so glad I started reading Wayfarer's Guild!
Nova is a smart and interesting protagonist-- she's thoughtful and resourceful, so although she is a stranger in a strange land, she makes considered choices and navigates her situation well. Her magic is very curious, and I'm looking forward to seeing how she develops it further.
I cannot tell you how much I love Briney, who is most definitely not a pet. His presence adds a touch of chaos and whimsy to Nova's situation, and I feel there's much more to him than we know.
The world building in particular has been wonderful. I especially enjoyed the more 'mundane' detail-- for instance, the trip to the tailor's shop. The author has an eye for picking out details that we might take for granted but truly would be something new and challenging in a different world. Also, it's awesome when practical things (like the need for a Sanitation Guild) are inserted into fantasy worlds. Not everything can be resolved with magic, ya know? I'm also intrigued by the systems (especially Nova's glitchy one) and how Nova's will or will not interact with the one in her new world.
The writing is clear and flows at a nice pace. I never feel like it's dragging, but the author takes the time to give thoughtful details and context. There's a lot to uncover here, and I trust the author to take us on a good journey.
All in all, absolutely recommend! - JEPayneRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a fantastically polished portal fantasy with a strong female lead and (at the time of writing) a small but vivid supporting cast of entertaining characters. The author clearly has an in depth understanding of how to craft a story, kicking things off at an almost frenetic pace to draw the reader in, then slowing down a tad to let them catch their breath and answer some of their questions. It is one of the overall highest quality stories I have seen on rr.
Style - as mentioned before, the author understands pacing and flow. The prose is unobtrusive, effectively conveying information without drawing attention, allowing the reader to become immersed in the story itself.
Story - the story is very promising, even at this early stage. The world feels fleshed out, and tension comes from some interesting reversals of common portal fantasy tropes. Portals within portals, worlds between worlds, and a glitching system give this a very different feel to a lot of other portal fantasy's.
Grammar - nigh on flawless
Character - character is superb. The MC is a strong female lead, but unlike many other strong leads, she demonstrates this through mental resilience and cunning as opposed to an overpowered offensive skill set. She also feels fully fleshed out, with her own wants and priorities. The supporting cast feels similarly lifelike, and without giving too much away, I think I have a new favourite familiar character. Briny rocks!
