- JoJoTKobeRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Warriors: Rising follows the tale of Paige Ashton, a seemingly normal college girl in an unremarkable town who lives a peaceful life, but this tranquil facade begins to be threatened as her mysterious past rears it head.
So far, two plotlines are told in parallel, the past where we see the circumstances of Paige's birth and where we see hints of her mother's life, and the present where Paige is living her current life. I really enjoy how these two parts are interwoven, and the past parts really serve to build intrigue and anticipation for what is to come in the present. I will say though that some may find the couple chapters showing Paige's life with her friends to be slow-going, but I really enjoyed the dialogue and banter between them!
The writing style of the author is also quite great and makes for smooth reading while also being full of emotion from the characters. There are however some grammar mistakes here and there, but they aren't such a problem that they burden the reading. Some proofreading will definitely help to elevate the writing.
The author's also done a great job to build up the characters shown in both the past and present. Paige has been built up to be a girl satisfied with her normal, peaceful life which will of course make the following events to come something that will shake her character.
I'm looking forward to where the story heads! Recommend to fans of low fantasy in a modern world and to those who enjoy an intriguing story full of mystery that slowly unfolds itself. - David GilesRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Warriors: Rising has a fairly solid start with a clear plot in mind, though as of the time of this review the author has yet to pull back the curtain, although it is clear that the reveal is coming and that they know what it is. What we have seen so far is promising however with a main character with clear motivations and a fairly large friend group that sharply contrasts the brooding loner of the typical low fantasy setting and is a breath of fresh air for it.
Now to the individual sections...
Grammar
The grammar is solid and the spelling the same and what few errors there are often could as easily be stylistic choices.
Story
It is here that Warriors runs into its first big problem, it is telling two parallel stories and does at times struggle with this where it has to dance around information in the flashback that it does not want the reader knowing for its primary story thread.
On the positive side once it begins to hit its stride around Chapter 3 it is an enjoyable read with a delightful mix of angst and intrigue in the flashbacks and a well executed section of teen drama in the present.
Additionally, although this is technically should be in the style section, and will be elaborated on there, it does impact the story, Warriors' slow pacing means that weighing in at 31k words it is yet to reveal the conflict promised in the premise and thus far reads more like mystery novel than the action-drama promised. I expect this to fix itself down but for now is a serious issue.
Character
This is where Warriors shines the most, particularly in the flashback sections, characters have a clear voice and their interactions and scheming remain engaging throughout, with the sole exception of Chapter 2, not through lacking anything the rest has but the excessive length of the chapter means the teen bickering and ribbing overstays its welcome as characters are established.
The sole issue with character that stops it getting a solid 5/5 score is that the author often places too m
