Warhammer 40,000: Mind over Matter

Description
Set in the Warhammer 40k universe, but accessible to those unfamiliar with the setting.
The Imperium of Man has been fighting the Long War for ten thousand years. It is a war fought simultaneously across thousands of stars and against innumerable enemies. On smoke-filled battlefields and in the cold emptiness of the void the military might of the Imperium stands strong in the face of horrifying foes. It is not a war fought to conquer new lands, or to seize the wealth of enemy nations. It is a war fought to hold what they have, or to regain what they have already lost.
The world of Nova Iberia is far from that war and supports the Imperium by sending her finest sons to foreign stars to fight and die as elite commandos in the Imperial Guard. A chance discovery on the corpse of one of these commandos has cast doubts around the world's loyalty, and has drawn the attention of the Imperial Inquisition. The seekers of the Alien, the Heretic and the Daemon have descended upon this peaceful world, and they will not leave it intact.
Primaris Psyker Amelia Lafayette was a ward of the state, now bound as an acolyte to the Inquisition in recognition of her telepathic gifts. Inexperienced, and browbeaten by her training, she must adapt to her new circumstances or fall. If she can navigate the tangled webs of heresy, and survive life in the Inquisition, then she may find the opportunity to prove herself worthy of greater authority.

- 0friendsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm not a 40K fan and I usually try to avoid fanfics but this is just a cut above the rest. It's well written, with good grammar/diction and the story hasn't devolved into a meandering mess like so many other web novels. Furthermore, the intersection of character-driven drama and dystopian theocratic nightmare results in some damn interesting reading.
I read it all in one sitting. - chuba000Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0One of the best 40k stories I have ever read. It's one of the few which managed to perfectly encapsulate the grim atmosphere of a story involving the Inquisition and the writing style is of far better quality than most fanfics on this site.
- worryinglyIntoIsekaiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I find the Warhammer 40k universe to be both a rich and challenging setting for stories. Rich because there's so much lore and in many ways it's a well crafted dystopia with opportunities for both injustice and heroism.
Challenging because the Warhammer 40K Universe is designed to be absurd. It has comedic silly elements that, in the context of the table top game, balance out the depressing lore with quirky details revealing the universe to be somewhat of a parody.
This leads to the temptation to create an Isekai story because denizens of the 40k universe are so alien to our sensibilities and values as what it means to be human. Or you end up with an incredibly depressing story because that's the nature of grim dark. The best, most individuals can hope for is something incredibly depressing, which would be hell by human sensibilities today.
This story is well calibrated in my opinion. Psychers are a pariah class in the empire, most are sacrificed to the corpse emperor. And the few survivors experience discrimination, treated as disposable tools at best.
Amelia's journey of rising above this prejudice and becoming an agent of this dystopian TINA empire is one of overcoming adversity, a classic hero's journey.
The writing is solid, the plot is well developed and mature. I believe that this could be put into the 40K canon and would be an excellent addition. If you like 40K fan fiction and you like good, solid, sci-fi action writing, I think this is a story you'll enjoy. - Wong40kRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The story follows Amelia in her climbing the "corporate ladder" inside the most powerful organisation in the Imperium of Man - the Inquisition.
From the story telling pov, it is refreshing to center it on a character who is technically not the shot caller of the day. My favorite scene of the series has to be when the protagonist tried to slack off in the middle of a raid on a rogue planetary governor's fortress.
The formatting from earlier chapters can use some improvement as sometimes it feels like being hit with a wall of text which might discourage casual readers. Everything else from grammar to vocabulary is solidly serviceable, personally I felt a little bit more trimming and polishing would really make them shine.
Amelia's adventure would see her climb the ranks within the inquisition as she followed her boss to purge heretical activities of a planet. In the grueling process Amelia slowly turned from a lowly aide to someone close to the inner circle of her boss.
The series also contains many colourful characters which imo are the highlights. From a helpful techpriestess, a dashing interrogator, Amelia’s timid aide and her frightening boss the =][= himself, the "Mind Over Matter" is a solid read.
