- primemountainRoyal Road★★ 1.5If you like that kind of thing, you may find enjoyment here. I did not. The story is written with some competence, though many of the RPG elements feel a bit off. It might be the lack of blue boxes. Because of it, the RPG feels like it is stylistically flat, which strangely makes it match the grey and back nature of the world the MC is trapped in. Things may improve later on, but from the description, I think not.
I find the work competent, but really not my cup of tea. If you like blood, gore, death, and pointless cruelty that’s justified with hand waves to “because magic” and “evil kingdom kidnappers”, which, to be fair, is entirely ok for this genre, then you might enjoy this kind of thing. This shouldn't be a spoiler as it's in the blurb for the story itself.
Think of it like if you were reading the plot of Doom, except the MC is one of the regular people, not Doomguy. Or a plot of Saw. It’s brutal, bloody, and cruel. It does that well. This is not a good thing. To me, such elements need contrast, or you get reader apathy as more characters come and go.
Like I did.
Even Warhammer 40k books usually have more light and hope than the opening chapters of this. Reading this made me feel bad, but it's not like the warnings aren't there at the top. Heed them.
