GrinRoyal Road

First, I want to say that this story and this author have potential. Sadly, many things hold this novel back, so I'm going to adress them here so the author may improve.
The story is good. Not stellar or fantastic, but it does the job. The setting is interesting , sadly we don't get much worldbuilding. The plot never feels contrived , except for the main character's backstory.
English may not be the author's first language, but the grammar is quite correct. However the switching between present and past tense really break the immersion.
The first chapter is quite good, and I really liked the moments where the main character just does his things. However this brings me to the first big issue : the pacing or the lack thereof. The story unfolds way too quickly. There's a "big reveal" which just falls flat... the dialogues unfold very quickly, and though there are no boring descriptions there are almost no descriptions at all ! There's no down time and this hurts the story. This takes away all of the power of the big reveal as we don't even see the effect this has on the main character.
This brings me to another problem : I'd advise the author to look up how to " show not tell ". The fact there's a lot of dialogue and no descriptions just make for bad storytelling. It feels very contrived.
