Description

Zubari, a reclusive man haunted by violent voices in his head, lives quietly in the countryside. One day, he intervenes in a tense situation at a store, violently attacking a racist man who’s threatening a woman named Taylor—who strangely resembles his favorite actress. That night, Taylor shows up at his cabin, revealing she’s on the run from a cult that’s been hunting her due to her ability to see things others can’t. Drawn to her and calmed by her presence, Zubari lets her in. They share an intimate night, but their peace is shattered when the cult finds them. As the invaders break into his home, Taylor tells Zubari to "let go"—and he blacks out.

This is a pretty good horror story that moves at a bit slower pace than a short story probably should go. A few things concerned me about just how the carriage and its passengers were laid up and as to the conductor line working, but I do not have a great knowledge of that subject. One thing that bothered me was the dialogue and the rather bland prose, it is effective but there were significant chunks that just felt mechanical and odd. The dialogue tags are not consistent and in these places it is where a lot of the missing quotes and typos are - as if the rough draft was not fully finalized. It was a good short story and was fairly effective, but it does have some issues. It does capture one aspect of the horror vibe well, being trapped.
