Viscount's Rise
Community Rating
Description
With his father dead and his brother inheriting the earldom, Braydon sets out to inherit the family’s neglected title, Viscount of Cliforge, the only land of the Kingdom on the other side of the Brimstone Mountains.
His new lands are on the border that is held peaceful by an uneasy truce and the same lands that claimed his father’s life on the battlefield.
With no reputation in noble society and no military might to speak of he will be a long way from challenging his brother whose land is some of the most prosperous in the empire, and has the backing of their younger brother, who has the smarts to raise their position even further.
Will he become another casualty to the lands that have already claimed his father, or become something more as he climbs his way to prominence?
At least he can be sure that his brother would never see him rise peacefully, and the neighbouring Grand Duke desires the last territory of the kingdom on the eastern side of the mountains. His position is anything but stable, he will do anything to change that and build his realm.

- silver_1_phoenixRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really enjoy reading this novel and the progression is wonderful. Gerald is my favorite character and provides the right amount of comedic relief. Brandon and Neal work well together to push the story forward and just enough banter to leave readers guessing about their relationship. I can't wait to read what Brandon has next in store for us!
- IshadormanRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0If i would sum what a good story needed most, there are some points:
Logic based and thus believeable course of action taken by the characters, fine dialogue, and likeable characters.
This story has those all. Also you would find the story in more or less vivid way, evading the white room syndrome, while keeping the pace right. - PTPoggRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0After a fairly weak first chapter the story takes off a bit slow but nicely. The characters are well developed, the story flows well, there is a good backstory, there is enough twists and turns to delight and surprise the reader. So far this is a story that is PG for violence, suitable for teens as well as adults. I'm hooked and eagerly await each update.
- Turtle WarsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I dont have any complaints. Quite a decent read when it comes the genre it belongs to (historical/political intrigue). There are a lot of chapters to binge and binge I did. Entertaining enough not to put down, but not gripping enough to worry what happens next.
The best of the sort I have read was one by a Chinese author (Kingdom's Bloodline), unfortunately that stopped mid way. This one is not at that level. Also this is not one of those ones where other than the MC everyone is an idiot. Good thing about this novel is that the MC is not that much of a grand strategist. He has to depend on others.
Now the negative aspect. In lot of places the author has used modern terms compared to the age in which this is happening. A usage like "silver bullet" makes no sense in a period where there are no firearms. Also usage of the command "fire" to archers. Another 4th wall breaking point was the use of tea names like "Darjeeling" - since there is no India or Darjeeling in this world, how can a tea be named like that?
I might be being picky, but a noble shouldn't be named Chandler. Historically it makes no sense.
Other than these minor things that the author has to be aware of when writing a historical story, the grammar is good, couple of (inadvertent) spelling issues, a good read. - firemikRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The title says it all. This story is about a Viscount in a Medieval like era. This story contains city building as well as army building. This story is more on the lighter side as the main character is has more modern ethics than 14th century nobles. All in all a good read if this is what your interested in.
- qmills88Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Fantastic story, well written and great characters who are well built out, intruiging and make you want to read more the main characters go well together. The story flows nicely no stale plot lines of pitfalls of Bordem or over explaining great pace of story, some comedy/humour in just the right places. Just a well rounded well written peice.
- SandsandalRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This was a pleasant suprise. I thought it would be a copy paste story or at least boring because it is too Historical, turned out to be entertaining and actually still make sense within a historical world.
I am withholding one half of a star because of the front cover, it does not match the book or MC. - luminariumRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The story does a great job depicting medieval military strategy and tactics, empire management, and political intrigue.
In particular, I like how the author has gone to great lengths to show the reasons why individual characters take the actions they do and how they interact to create convoluted military campaigns. It's really quite realistic and rationalist.
Military tactics is depicted realistically (as far as I can tell based on my knowledge of medieval warfare), which is quite uncommon to see and very refreshing. The detailed play-by-play of military forces maneuvering around each other is also very well done and something that I've rarely seen in stories.
The nobles and their manner of interaction with each other - such as through spying, meetings, making trade deals, relationships, backstabbing, and trying to predict each others' intentions and movements - all make the story come alive and make it seem very believable. They feel like actual characters each with their own motivations.
The biggest gripe I have with the story is that it has a lot of scenes which slow down the story. The Fiverian civil war arc takes something like a hundred chapters - far too long considering that at the end of it, very little of what transpired during the arc actually matters (just the outcome). - FishfaceRoyal Road★★★ 3.0PROS- Well written and with decent plot and characters.
CONS- The story is a bit slow to take off, the main character is bland and the setting is as-of reading a historical medieval fuedal society with no fantasy elements written. the writing while good doesnt grip me, so overal the story comes off rather bland with much room for improvement.
