- rodrigo7923Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0The worldbuilding is great, the characters are very well written and the magic system is really interesting. This is one of my favorite stories ever.
If I started reading it for the first time today, I wouldn't have the strength to finish it.
It is no exageration when I say this story alongside "Worth the candle" have broken me in ways that haven't healed from and don't think I ever will. And I do mean broken, not just changed, though I did change too as a consequence.
I dreaded everytime a chapter came out because when things were fine, they were going to get so, so much worse and when things were bad, they were very bad.
I thought I could handle dark stories, I liked them even. I could handle torture, suicide and thought I could deal with anything else a story could throw at me. After this story I realized I was wrong. After this, I haven't been able to handle anything close to what I used to.
Maybe I'm just more sensitive than I thought. But I don't think so, I can't imagine anyone could handle that scene. If you've read the story, you know what I'm talking about. If you start reading it, you might think you found it, but you probably won't. Don't worry though, you'll know exacly which scene I'm talking about when you read it.
The only fault I can think of is that for a while, there were a few chapters with someone elses pov that I got kind of sick of. Still, they were necessary and I guess that's what happens when you like the mc too much.
Just know the world is dark and if you can handle it or even like it, this is a great story. - BillycoolRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Very rarely give reviews but the latest change in the story had me so excited with what will happen I had to write one. To start with the story has as far I've seen no spelling mistakes which is always nice. Also characters have interesting personalities that make me want to learn more about them and their behaviour, to me, is consistent with what I have learned or later learned about each character. Thanks for writing this book, it's been fun.
- Jotun RRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Other reviews have already praised this story for it's magnificent writing and characters and all the other important literary bits, but one detail of it that has enthralled me more than any other is it's structure, the way that each part of this saga is put together, and it's for me at least, it is it's greatest quality.
Vigor Mortis has a unique pacing and way of adding flips and twists to the story that I've never read before and you have to read it to really understand it, every change of perspective added something precious to the story and each moment of introspection really made each character into it's own universe, each time a plot got turned upside down and turned into something completely different it enhanced the story instead of cheapening it, when a villain appears it takes you by surprise, this is a very grey story in the realm of morality, and that's no surprise, it's the main question of it in the end after all, and it allows the story to flow like water in a way that I've never seen/read before, it takes my breath away and left me with wet eyes on multiple occasions, it's one of the better stories I've ever read, an easy 5/5 and an instant recommendation as long as you're okay with reading the tags beforehand since it handles some HEAVY topics, specially on the second book. - Rayel TartarusRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story has single-handedly made me feel the strongest emotions I have ever felt. The build up to the ending is the most wonderful thing I’ve ever experienced and I wish for those of you who wish to read this amazing story to be impacted just as much as I have if not more.
- karidyasRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Blitzed through this in an unhealthily short time, I couldn't put it down. Thunda's ability to craft thoroughly likeable bad people is on full display here.
The internal first person perspective helps a lot to get into characters' heads, and the multiple PoVs are done very well with clear, distinct voices. The world is really interesting, with believable epic-scale beauties and horrors. And speaking of horrors, the plot! Poor Vita really goes through it eh. The status quo shifts fairly often, meaning you're never really sure what's going to happen next. We get some nice introspection on the nature of faith, good and evil, forgiveness, humanity, ethics, emotions, and all the different ways you can be a person.
It's not perfect - the world is very interesting on a macro level, but feels a little flat in detail. The plot sometimes feels like it bites off more than it can chew, meaning some characters get little screen time as time goes on and potential is left on the table in service of pacing. The ending is also quite abrupt and leaves a lot of threads untied, though perhaps that messiness is intended as natural. However, its strengths - character writing and emotional rollercoasters - make up for it and then some.
A deffo recco from me if you like harrowing adventures filled with monsters (on both sides)! - lnraelRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It should be very clear within a few chapters whether this is your thing or not. Vita pretty much immediately
eats a human soul.
If you aren't ready for a full exploration of what it means to be a person, including an exploration of numerous ways you can twist a person into a smaller, more twisted knot, up and to and past the point of breaking, don't read this. Well, maybe read it -- you might like it, and yes, this is worth the shot -- but don't come back to me when you find exactly what I'm saying's on the tin, ok?
But if you're a fan of body-twisting, mind-breaking, soul-snatching, transhumanist horror with a sprinkling of some hope, this is the story for you.
I'm giving this a 5 star rating - with the mildest of critiques being that when too many characters start aligning in ideology their voices can start to sound like the author's. Which is fine, honestly. I do enjoy an author who knows where she stands. - radiofrankRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0the author must have sent a whole caln of onion cutters to my room because DAMM. i fudeging love the ending because it makes me cry every time. Rosco and Vita deserve to have everything. the story is the best i've read on royal road ever and probably ever will.
still crying. - AxeliosRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It's a rough start and not for everyone, but after a couple chapters or so its a riveting read! Great stuff! I am definitely hooked!
I really like how magic is handled, and the way the social and interpersonal issues are explored. Very original world design and I don't think I've ever heard of a character quite like the main character in this story. The dark and heavy parts of the story are well worth the triumphs, laughs, and catharsis in my opinion.

After finishing the story:
Wonderful story. I will miss being glued to this story with occasional moments of near or actual tears as Vita suffered and grew. This story has been heavy on introspection with a very real feeling set of characters.
Bravo Thundamoo. Bravo 👏 👏 - F.DjRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0There two stories that I praised the most in RR so far. One is The Eagle's Flight and the other is A Journey of Black And Red. Both have overall superb quality. There are also Mother of Learning too, but it does not first release in RR so it doesn't count. And this one just now become my third most favorite. Though to be honest, at first the title, the synopsis and book's picture left nothing to be desired. I was really really surprised it turned out to be a very good read, one of the best I've ever read in RR. Guess don't judge the book by its cover means a thing huh?!
- FatangryRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is in my opinion a great example of sympathetic monsters, objectively the MC and many of the main supporting cast would in any other story be monsters and the story would focus on the heroic MC removing them from society as a whole.
That is not the case here. The author has managed to make the monstrous MC and supporters 'cute' enough that the readers are very sympathietic to them.
(Note: Spoilers ahead)
It is very skillful writing of absolutely horrible people to make the readers find the soul removing amoral monster who performs necromancy on unwilling subjects to torture them because they annoyed her or the human experimentation performing friend who is manipulating the the MC not just socially but also literally changing her body to better suit their own tastes so likeable.
In any other story these monsters would be hunted to destruction and the readers would cheer, in this one? They're unironically being shipped.
Bravo Author, Bravo. I wish I could write a sympathetic monster so well I have a story I want to write that has as an MC an unrepentent monster just like these ones but I know I'm not skilled enough yet.
