Description

Ever since they were little, Cherri Kusuri and Gumi Kusuri have always lived in a world of their own, under the delusional belief that they are the only two humans left on Earth and that every single other person on Earth has been replaced. At all times, through their eyes, they can only see inhuman monsters, strange aliens, clunky machines, anthropomorphic animals, and other such miscellaneous creatures and phenomena. Like wolves in sheep's clothing, but the Kusuri girls were the only actual sheep.

And as they're going into high school, as they're preparing for this next chapter of their lives, ready to face the challenges of it and come out as the most popular girls in the school... they're immediately made the subject of bullying, branded as targets and delinquents. Discovering before their very eyes that the entirety of high school is a feeding ground to the worst lions and beasts they've ever encountered.

In the face of this struggle, however... the Kusuris are determined to come out on top. They've been ready to make the most out of this new life, this new town, ready to triumph and get to the very top of it all.

And their story all starts with Cherri Kusuri, as she writes in her new little mind diary - the one that she frames as "telepathically speaking with some random guy after eating a bunch of strawberry mints in the middle of the night."

(This is my Writathon 2024 work! I submitted the first chapter early, just so I can go right out the gate when the Writathon starts. Starting from Chapter 2, the 55k word count will be counted and worked on after 10-31-2024!

"Urban Monsters" presents a clever and emotionally resonant take on the high school experience through a fascinating supernatural lens. Written in a stream-of-consciousness diary format, the story follows two sisters navigating their freshman year in a world that's undergone a mysterious transformation, or is it really?
The writing style perfectly captures the authentic voice of a teenage girl, complete with tangents, hesitations, and raw emotional honesty. Cherri's narration feels genuinely conversational, addressing her entries? to "Mr. California" in a way that adds both humor and poignancy to her reflections.
The story skillfully blends slice-of-life elements with supernatural intrigue, using its premise to explore themes of isolation, identity, and sisterly bonds. While there are occasional grammatical quirks, these actually enhance the authenticity of Cherri's voice rather than detract from it.
Where the story truly shines is in its character work. Cherri and Gumi are wonderfully realized characters whose relationship forms the emotional core of the narrative. Their dynamic feels genuine and complex, with layers that continue to unfold as the story progresses.
The worldbuilding is cleverly woven throughout Cherri's casual observations, creating an intriguing setting that raises fascinating questions while remaining grounded in relatable high school experiences.
Fair warning - this isn't going to be for everyone. If you're seeking a conventional high school story, you might want to look elsewhere. However, readers willing to embrace something unique will find themselves richly rewarded.

Urban Monsters is a very funny Teenage School drama/romance story. The entire story is provided through a first person POV stream of consciousness. As the story is told from the point of view of a teenage girl who is a bit neurotic. The story takes place in a world where suddenly all of humanity (supposably) other than the 2 MCs are turned into anthropomorphic creatures... or monsters. The story progresses through the struggles and dramas of teen child going to a new school and trying to establish or save their social lives.
This story is not my usual genre but it was very funny and the characters are well written and hilarious. The villains are very punch able and clever and the side characters are well developed.
The story telling style is very unusual. A lot of people do not like the first person POV stream of consciousness style. I feel like some may refuse to read this story because this style of storytelling has been done so badly so often before. This story is one of the rare occurrences where this style is done very well.
World building: There is not a lot of world building in this story because it's not that kind of story. It's a very down to earth character driven story which is fine for the genre.
Pacing: The story pacing is OVERALL very good. I only have one complaint about 1 small section in chapter 2. I think that is more than forgivable.
Overall, the story was a fun read, and I recommend you give it a read.
