Up For a Spell - Old Man Turns Wizard
Community Rating
Description
James Blaise likes naps. Doesn't like books, especially fantasy. Doesn't know how to use the internet--whatever that is. And is now awizard.
Seventy years old and content with his usual routine, James is happy with his boring, average, normal life. That is, until he stumbles upon a book and is transported into a fantasy world, complete with magic, dragons (kind of), and a beautiful damsel to save. Just your stereotypical fantasy adventure. But James, who enters this new world armed with a sword he can't lift and ill-fitting hero duds, decides to change the script when he stumbles upon a tower in the middle of nowhere and finds some cozy robes calling his name.
Little does he know that donning the robes will transform him into a wizard--long white beard, crooked hat, magic spell book, and all.
Except James can't be bothered to read his book of spells and is only willing to go questing if it means getting back to his comfy chair and newspaper faster. Will he save the Green Queen, and will his joints hold up for the long trek?
Don't ask James--he's only up for a spell.

- DBoyBluesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I often like to ramble on or post oddly weirded reviews the mods don't seem to enjoy.. but here, this story deserves an actual review.
Like an old fable, mixed with modern jokes, this story leans on humor and wit.
Our characters do feel like a character and not a person, but as such in the eyes of the child would retell a fantastical story.
Our main character is a lazy old man who enjoys his naps and his preschefuled days, whereupon his nephew of the same name discovers a forgotten game that brings our old man into a fantasy land whereupon he must save the green lady.. or so it seems.
Upon their adventure they meet dapper giants, fishmonger obsessed bandits, giant produce, a dragon/cow?.. um... yes, so join our hero as he seeks to save the Lady, bring back the bounty and prosperity she brought upon the land, and him finding a nice warm and cozy bed to settle into.
I highly recommend this story as a bit of fluff between other stories. It's a very fun read and while simple, shows a love for the fantasy tropes while calling them out on their tropes from the view of an old man who could care less. Please, give it a try. - Mohammed OsmanRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The writer is very skilled and the concept is original. Honestly a joy to read. The characters are original as is the story concepts. It doesn't fall into tropes but does wink at them. I can't think of any other story centered around a senior citizen, and a cranky one at that.
I think the first 2 chapters are slow and hard to get through, but its worth it. Once James, the main character, arrives into the fantasy world the story picks up big time. Highly recommend this story. It just got started and I can't wait to see where it goes. - tidewaterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0the main character was sucked into a book and originally given the story role of "hero" but he was like "no, I don't think I will. oohh, that robe looks comfy." and now is the wizard to a young hero. probably lamenting the lack of epsom salt and hot baths. guesses if the story finishes, he can go home, back to his chair, and have his date with his elderly crush.
