- voice of reasonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Definitely one of the best stories I've read on this site. The pacing is excellent in my opinion and grammar is near pefect. The world building is very unique and wonderfully creative as well. All in all I really liked it and I definitely recommend giving this a go.
- CyclopsSlayerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It started a bit slow, but has rapidly grown on me. Chapter 11 now. Truly a fun story so far. Even if our pair-up with a certain someone seemed obvious to me from the moment we saw them. LOL
Well worth the read. - GhevRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story has me laughing out loud fairly often. The author has a good mix of characters. The main character has a great backstory with tons of potential. The setting is great and the world building is vivid. I am halfway through ish. I look forward to seeing where the author takes this.
- Hedon_in_BlissRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I like it, I think the world-building is good and the main character seems interesting. I have some thoughts though, the main character could be more fleshed out in the sense of her mannerisms, routines, dislikes, and preferences. The power system could also be explored a little more as I find it hard to see how characters become stronger, other than simply exercising their power and control. Do skills and power only come from the pools, are there undiscovered pools of power? Then again I don't write, have trash taste in movies, read bad books for pleasure, I've only finished book 1 and am now starting book 2. So wut I'm saying is that I have no credentials but Imma give this 5 stars cause I live by my own rules:
- If wut I'm reading or consuming is horrible, homophobic, xenophobic, sexist, etc... with no discernable reason, such as reflecting on morals, ethics and all that good stuff. Then I don't rate it and stop reading.
- If wut I am reading isn't boring, I read it, but don't review or leave any comments.
- If I like it, even just a little it gets 5 stars, cause anything creative in this world needs to be recognized. It doesn't matter if I'm some random shmuck from the streets it gets a gold star from me.
Periodt, bye - vladeragRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Originally, the title of this review was going to be "come for the adventure, stay for the mystery," but I am willing to bet that 70% of you are perverts and the remaining 30% are just pretending not to be.
More seriously, this is simply an excellent story with interesting and decently complex characters operating across multiple well built worlds and detailed settings. There will be characters you like; there will be characters you hate: there will be characters you hate and then like and then become confused on whether or not they had sex with a monster girl.
And behind the characters, the setting, the action and the politics, there is a deep mystery running throughout the core of Undermind. To borrow a phrase from our protagonist, I have no frocking idea where this story is going, but I am enjoying every word of it.
I wouldn't necessarily call it a "must read," but as the story progresses I think it has a chance to reach that point. - BlahbluhRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Undermind is one of the most interesting stories I've read on RoyalRoad in a while. Fantastic world, awesome characters, solid slice of life moments with one of the best plots, and written well too.
The central story concept that we get to at the beginning of book 2 is one of my favorites in fantasy, and the take on it is fantastical and raw, while seeming to come out of the pages effortlessly in it's cohesive and clear vision of a complicated world where the characters lack of information makes sense. The actions of the heroes and villains both come through as competent, multifacted, and real with the information they do have, and their search for more information and understanding drives the story forward in a compelling and wonderful way.
I've been delighted with the amount of content, but especially the consistency of both the characters and the continuation of the world around them. Things that are tied in with each other continue to stay relevant, and characters do not change abruptly, but grow and process the things that happen to them, becoming more themselves within their new situations. An absolute pleasure to read, and I was never interrupting from my delving into the material by spelling of sentence issues. - Astra19Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5Style Score - The story's style allows for the reader to understand who is talking, what events are unfolding and what the characters are reading. SealJohnson also changes the text style to apply meaning to the affected text. 4.5 star because I want quicker releases and I need to have a negative occurrence somewhere.
Grammer Score - I'm not gonna say I'm perfect with english grammer so I won't notice the correct place to input a semicolon in stead of a comma but I do notice simple mistakes such as the usage of "your and you're", "Though and Thought" and other similar occurrences. So yes 5 star simply because I can't notice any of the story's mistake through a simple read through.
Story Score - The story seems to be an adventure story where you follow a women who woke up in a new world in the body of a troll. Her first meeting with sentientent beings end with a spear in her gut with them yelling in a foreign language.
Character Score - Some might find the MC responce to flee from a spear in the gut to be unrealistic however she has never fought before, she's in a monster's body which has a higher pain threshold than her human one and her body would be affecting her mentaility as well.
What I do find strange is one of her companions has been through decades of torture and seems to adjust to quickly to her current situation. (Though I do agree that having a catatonic companion would hurt the overall story).
TL;DR
The story is good with around ten pages per chapter and with what seems to be weekly release. If you're looking for a wish fulfillment or an edgelord type MC this story doesn't seem to be for you. - One ArmyRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5I respect your courage to set ' unique' setting for your story. Like trooll MC , evil elf, yggdrasil (tree) location, etc. It fell fresh and unique compared to other fantasy/isekai genre. But it was also challenge to other that dont have rich imagination/ don't familiar with this setting (like me).
Such as when MC in soul state when talk to his elf freind. (Trool ini soul state?)
Or the MC goes down inside the tree, what she found is stone, river and lava (not Wood). Part of me is understand the story but my rational mind denied it
It Will be good of you cantik add some ilustration for the caracter and setting - AnotherW4NRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5Started good but lost its hook for me mid Book 2. My issue was that I simply didn't care about any of the characters or their motivations, vague as they were. The fact that the book quickly shifted from its initial premise, a girl stuck in a foreign body and foreign land just trying to survive, to something entirely different, an adventure story, also threw me off. Its definitely not a bad read but I still managed to lose my interest. I recommend at least trying it and I myself may come back to it at a later date.
- EisenYellsRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5Technically it seems well written, but the MC's internal commentary is annoying. The some stuff also seem detailed to an unnecessary degree? Idk it's hard to explain. I just really don't need to know how the layering of vision elements works, but then the tearing out of a throat with your mouth is glossed over
Either way, if you have higher tolerances than me you should enjoy this.
