- Sam TolanRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This story is unusual for Royal Road, and one that would likely be hard to catch on. It has a very minimalist approach to imagery, descriptions, emotions or connections in general. There are times the character behave cartoonishly evil (the queen for instance) and there is a sudden unexplained time skip of three months in the first chapter that makes it hard to connect with the story.
There is a mystery angle, but it's not handled more than decently, and seems to cause more immersion breaking sections than drawing readers in.
One part of the first chapter didn't have separate lines between each paragraph/line which led to it being a huge wall of text. It got to the point I was skimming and even when I was rereading it was hard to focus on what just happened.
And a lot of things happen at once but they don't seem real or tangible. The characters don't exactly feel alive, and there is a lot of dialogue.
It shifts between first and third person at times, and even present or past tense (more present) making it hard to read.
All of these can be solved by taking time to edit.
Overall, it was a interesting beginning. It is rough right now, but it might shine like a precious jewel if polished right. Or it could wind up a dud.
Either way, I will continue to read for a while longer.
