Description
The Raoin Sea is not a safe place. The Qisin Empire lays dismembered, and the claimants to its throne are too busy fighting each other to care about the pirates, demons, and foul magic users that roam the waves. Aven, the son of a renowned thief, is on a mission to fulfill his late mother’s last wish. He joins with the notorious pirate captain, Headless Bill, sailing into Chanan Harbor to break into a magistrate’s safe. When the job goes south, they must scramble to claim the loot as other forces try to take the prize. Along the way, a naive monk, a cursed blacksmith, and a harried bureaucrat are drawn into Headless Bill’s vendetta, swept up in the struggle against the Grand Admiral Azun.

- LibromancerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is one of the best written stories I have read on RoyalRoad.
There is so much to talk about that I can’t but I will try to explain some of my thoughts.
Firstly this is debut performance from an author but the prose is written at a higher quality than 90% of other RoyalRoad books that have received higher ratings and views. While there are minor spelling or grammar mistakes the prose is high quality and easy to read leading to a real addictive quality where I consumed this serial in a matter of a week or two.
The magic system(s) are innovative and a breath of fresh air, while also including some familiar aspects to retain some sense of perspective of how unique the world really is.
The journey the characters take over the course of the novel is long and convoluted, and while it has a simple set-up the manner of its execution leads to a real investment from the reader in their journey. The way they develop is not always straightforward and their interactions show a real sense of camaraderie which I think is a rarity on this platform that favours solo MCs over a medley cast. While some aspects showed the authors inexperience (I.e Aven and Ji both had a sudden realisation near the end of the book that could have done with a big more set up) overall I highly enjoyed and engaged with the characters and really rooted for them to succeed.
Overall 5/5, especially for a debut novel. While the author has said they won’t do a big serial again and focus on series I hope they write on RoyalRoad again because they show a lot of potential and I am really excited for what they could accomplish in the future.
