[Night Nation,Book 2]

Candle Enys is no longer human. But her soul belongs to a demon and she wants it back.

To become whole she must travel to the land of the dead, and destroy the demon before it can destroy her.

Along the way she will make new friends, new enemies and explore the roots of her draconic heritage. This new dragon will leave behind her, a trail of destruction, cake crumbs and broken hearts (just kidding there’s no romance only death).

A dark fantasy with progression elements.

One chapter a day until its done. I will stop at the end of book 2 to contemplate my life choices and collect my braincells.

    Without getting into spoilerish details:
It's well written and has either a writer with good English skills or a good editor. The worldbuilding and magic are novel, and develop over time as opposed to being dumped on us at the beginning. The characters are well rounded, and even the side characters with small parts are distinct without feeling like caricatures. It starts strong and stays strong. This deserves proper publication and distribution.

When I first took in the tags I was first taken aback by seeing Grimdark, High Fantasy and Steampunk all in one. Then I considered the implications of Horror, Female Lead and Grimdark and almost closed the tap. Then however, I saw the review by Jiwa and decided to give it try, thankfully.
    Spoilers ahead.... DUH!
Style - Scenes are descripted in vivid detail without being gratuitous.      The Mountains, Castles and Crypts come alive and I swear I can see them and feel the same awe or terror our characters experience.
Story - The world is wholly Original does not require Status screens as a crutch, with a wholly homecooked magic system, and a culture with its own customs and beliefs!                                                                                                               The Story starts out quite slow but picks up pace from there, action and calm episodes are well spaced in my opinion.                                                                  My only gripe would be the instability and unatainability of certain societal states.
Grammar - Almost impeccable, at the very least it is to my eyes.
Character - The main character is well fleshed out and experiences real character growth. While she initially behaved like a often kicked puppy the reader will find her to be very compelling.                                                              The side characters are mostly well written, some more than others.

This has a solid world, interesting characters, and an interesting story line.  I spent an enjoyable morning reading the first 39 chapters.

"Twilight Kingdom" and its protagonist Candle most definitely have a soul. This is the tale of a girl undesired by all, grasping for hope- if only she had something to hope for. This is the tale of a lost soul, wandering without home. Tragedy that is constant. Of having to hide ones face to even hope for a normal life. A hope that will not be fulfilled for there is violence on the horizon.
A slow start building characters and circumstance. I dare say Candle is the only character that gets to be truly nuanced. The utter distaste with which her family regards her is lain down a bit thick. It's effective but overt- crass, almost. That is fine, though. Our time is spent with Candle, anyway. Her story is moving along at pace, the world's larger story only shows as storm clouds thus far, yet, is already well-visible. Many threads and little hints driving the reader to turn pages.
Stylistically this one is a bit different from “Reincarnation Station”, which I had picked up prior to this one. Not high-effort and attention grabbing, but seamless and fluent instead.
Grammar and sentence-structure are good. A few errors and a liberal use of dots not detracting much. The text-style changes at some points, also. (Specifically: 13, 16) Little things, that I'm sure will be caught in editing.
The ominous words: “Arc one is coming down soon,” spurred me into finally giving this one a try. Lucky that I didn't miss out on reading it. I am sure, however, the polished version will be even better.

This is one of royal road's gems. You know the ones. They pass by, unnoticed but by the canny few, and then one day they apear on the trending list and suddenly others like me can read. We can read and understand just how much passon and craft has gone into makeing this work of art. Well worth a read in my opionion. Even if it doesn't seem like you're type of thing, you may find yorself suprized.

Horror has very few good titles to its name, here at RR. And those that are there are tempered with humor or meta tropes and litrpg elements.
Now this... this is unadulterated stuff. The mystical atmosphere is there as is a pervasive sense of despair. All contrasted against a scientific civilization we can identify with - just in the role of the invaders instead of the invaded as is the case for most apocalyptic fictions.
The only other fiction that comes close on RR is Couplet... and in terms of published works: The Old Kingdom  series by Garth Nix.
Definitely  a must read if you like metal and magic.

This story is a nice breather from all the number-driven LitRPG syle stories that RR is innundated with. The magic in this story is magical, mystical, and unique compared to many other magical systems that are out there. With the unique magic system, also comes a unique world. This isn't your bog-standard middle-ages fantasy world with dwarves and elves. It's something else (exactly what is hard to tell though yet).
The Characters in this story area all also unique and interseting and this story captivates my attention when I read it. It's one of the stories that I actively follow and read every chapter right when it's released. My only real complaint is that the character Candle is somewhat naive even though she's been through a life of hardship that (IMO) would've burned that trust and naivte away. Ever time a new fundamental truth is revealed, or Candle's worldview is somehow fundamentally challenged, she resists accepting truth to an almost comical degree. I think a character of her upbringing would be more critical or doubting of what she's been told by her parents.

A great story about a girl who just wants to live a good life, and the people who just won't let her have it. The only real trouble is that the story is very chaotic, with multiple problems bombarding the main character so much that she's less of a hero and more a leaf caught in a hurricane. I'll sit here and wait patiently for her first solo moves, though. the world is genuinely impressive and i want to see more of it.
expect great battles against impossible odds, incredible feats of magic and technology, and a little girl who really deserves a warm glass of milk and a soft bed.

    The main problem I see
Many of the highest rated reviews here were written during the first 30-40 chapters and are almost unanimous in singing their praises.
And while with a start to a review like that you might expect me to object, the absolute opposite is the case.
The first thirty chapters or so are simply flawless.
The word is unique, the characters are intriguing, and there's plenty of mystery to keep you hooked.
The pace was slow, but it felt deliberate and fitting. It was simply echanting.
But now for the big "But"
In just a few chapters the world expands drastically and without any real foreshadowing or leadup the status quo just... Flips.
The exact moment the main character is at her lowest, a reveal occurs and she suddenly finds herself better than she's ever been.
    — Which leads directly into the abrupt and mostly closureless conclusion of a major part of the plot.
From then on, new antagonists and companions are introduced and the plot continued to progress at this rather quick pace.
The following chapters and plots are still decent, but it is a stark departure from the beginning. It was jarring and ripped me out of my immersion immediately.
    General criticism:
    Grammar:
Many reviews criticise the grammar, or deduct points for it.
    Frankly, I don't see it.
Whether this is due to my brain just filtering out these bumps in the experience automatically, or chapters being in a less congruent state when being first released compared to when I was reading them, I cannot say.
The only thing I can say is that I was never distracted by any grammatical hick-up, or had to go back to re-read a sentence due to it.
That's enough for me to say it's perfectly fine.
    Characters:
Many reviews also criticise the main character and her actions.
    Here, I can't really object.
As Candle becomes more proactive, more and more of the problems and threats she has to face... Are simply caused by her.
Through either negligence, failure to follow even the most simple of advice, or just no

Too many spelling and grammar errors, ranging from 5 to 10 a page, some quite *insistent* (such as Ancestor's instead of Ancestors). Repeatedly pointed out in the comments, yet seldom corrected - I'm dropping it.
