Tricked Into Flight

Description
Desperate to keep her magic hidden, Katerina goes to great lengths to avoid dragons and mages. When she gets cornered by evil mages, her only chance at escape involves freeing a trapped dragon who might kill her simply because she is human like the mages who bound him.
* * *
Most dragons detested humans. Too many tried to slay them, control them with magic, or steal their treasures. Every dragon may be born a mage, but their unique magical powers prevented them from wiping out the human race without dooming their own in the process.
Many humans were terrified of the massive magic-wielding dragons who were known to kill any who offended or annoyed them. Some humans bravely traded with the dragons, hoping for rare treasures or a spell. A few desired the dragon's bond since dragon riders were highly revered or feared wherever they went. Even kings were careful if a dragon rider showed up at their castles, for insulting a dragon rider could imply insult to the dragon, and the dragons didn't take kindly to being insulted.
Certain people, such as Katerina, knew the truth that so many overlooked.
The bond was a gilded cage. Dragons never let go.
When deadly creatures from the sea make their way into the rivers and set their sights on land, Katerina and the dragon she helped might have to work together to save both humankind and dragonkin.

- Celt ComstockRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I came across this story somewhat randomly, while looking for books on dragons. It was really a wonderful find, and I spent much more time with it over this weekend than I had originally planned.
This is better than about anything I’ve gotten from the bookstore recently. It features relatable characters, realistic (and often fun) dialogue, a very original story, and a plot that moves along at a compelling pace. The dragon lore and magic system is also very interesting.
I had wondered at the high quality, and, with a small bit of research, found that the author has a number of books, both on RR and Amazon, and seems to have been practicing her craft for some time. The author's experience really shines though in this book. I hope that she gets the attention she deserves on RR, as it is really nice to have such quality high-fantasy here in the RR community.
And so, on to the bits RR wants us to specially rate:
Style: The book is written in the first-person, with alternating points-of-view, so you get to see both Katerina's and Rakota's thoughts and opinions of each other. It is highly entertaining. They both have so many misconceptions, and I enjoyed the dragon Rakota's perspective on those annoying humans. I have to at least partially agree with the dragon.
Story: The plot centers around the accidental working-relationship (growing into friendship) between a travellings woman with a secret and a dragon she resues. It is original, moves at a good pace, and is pulls the reader in.
Grammar: Written at a high professional level, and we'll-edited by somebody better at editing than I am.
Characters: The reader gets to know a small flock of dragons and a few humans. All are well written and feel “real.” The two main characters, human and dragon, are both fully realized, consistent, and interesting folks with motivations the reader can relate to. - SeinexRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Well thought out world building and well designed characters.
My favorite part is that the main character had an actual reason for being picked. Most novels lack that or brush past it.
I personally enjoy mc's that aren't assholes or cocky. It was a breath if fresh air to have a normal mc and not the usual quirky rubbish. (Not quirky as in queer). I get tired of the same generic MC and ngl it was nice not knowing how hot the mc was and that she's not a god with a bow for no reason.
There was actual character growth and not just for the MC but important characters that the MC interacted with. They were changed by the encounter and grew instead of remaining static.
Every character had personality even some of the random characters that appeared for only a paragraph.
There were no typos or anything. The pacing was good and the story was not milked so that it was far longer than nessecary.
The story was written well in the fact there were no infodumps and anything you learn is well incorporated into the story in a natural manner.
Overachingly a really good fantasy book that I'd expect to see in a bookstore not as a web novel.
I starter this morning and wouldn't put the book down until I finished. Aha. - GcloudRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5A well written coming of age story featuring an paranoid young woman and a reluctantly helpful dragon.
This story does a good job humanizing the characters and getting the reader to understand their motives. The action is also exciting and well done, but the real story is the bonding of the two MCs.
While the story isn't breaking much new ground with the plot or theme, it's definitely worth a read if you like dragon and rider type books. - ZarallyRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5A beautifully written book. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and it was difficult to put the book down. I might be a bit biased because it had dragons, but I definitely recommend it if the topic seems interesting!
The ending was quite abrupt and a bit too “everything magically became perfect” compared to the tone of the rest of the book. I do like happy endings but I wish it would have been a bit more realistic - a small win instead of suddenly there not being any trouble in the world anymore.
