- A.TanabeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I don’t know what to say, great formatting, grammar and spelling. Villains, anti-heroes and all other types of characters have depth and colour to them through crafty storytelling and poetry. The plot development is layered. The writing style is beautiful with its poetic expressions and well-worded action scenes that show the interweaving interests of the characters.
The trigger warning is real, so if you are interested get a friend to read it too so that you have someone to warn you when there is a dark scene ahead. These scenes are necessary for character building and give more expression to the political issues in this world.
I haven’t caught up with where the story is currently at, and I think I will have the same to say even if a favourite character of mine dies in this story. It’s that good. - James KizerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0They say a conqueror is always a lover of peace for he rather conquer your country unopposed.
This is tale of a woman named Valerie who learns how to navigate the reality of living life as one of conquered people recently added to an empire. Will she be able to make her way in this new reality or be more grist for the mill. - KittyJinglesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A well written cultural clash between Val and the invading Drakonian society. I want to see if she can survive the palace. She was denied magic training, but now that she's been taken into the heart of the occupied royal court, she's going to rise in magic power
It's early in the story, but I'm liking the believable characters and the tension between people just trying to get on with their lives vs those that resist the invaders by holding onto their beliefs and traditions. The pacing is great, we start right in the action and it slows down when we need a breather. Magic worldbuliding isn't dumped on us, it comes as Val learns more about magic and sees more of the world
There are the seeds of an enemies to lovers thing, but that's not happening anytime soon. It's a fake relationship thing, not a cozy romance. She literally wants to kill him and he knows it
Grammar is fine, no complaints
There are lots of distinct background characters without it being overwhelming. Often times attempts at political intrigue stories become a confusing mess of motivations and random names but it's all been pretty clear and understandable and gripping. The main character is a flawed girl trying her best. I like that Valerie's afraid but not weak, she's smart and patient and angry but biding her time
Read it, there's pretty dresses and banter and violence and sexual tension - MegaduckRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Reviewing at Chapter 20 ‘The Ball’
This one of those stories that cannot really be reviewed chapter by chapter, only as whole which makes it difficult as Chapter 20 only feels about a fourth to a third of the way through.
Treacherous Witch has a five star opening.
The setting is very well done, we have the Drakonian Empire occupying the Maskamere and through the character interactions we get vivid look at two very different cultures that are in conflict. The main conflict is one of divinity verses magic but I also like that the conflict touches on economic issues, currency, family relations, and farming.
The Story arc looks like it will have a beginning middle and end and the chapters are not stand alone. The Main Character Valerie is a witch and part of an attempt to assassinate the Governor of occupied Maskamere. The plot fails and she starts the first chapter in a prison cell, as a Witch she is offered the choice of being burned at the stake and her family slaughtered or she can pose as the consort of the Governor she tried to murder while helping the conquerors understand magic.
This story is very much setup like a romance with the government being dark and handsome and the main character being stunningly beautiful. They are antagonistic to each other but there are seeds of possible affection. We’ll have to see how it goes.
The supporting characters are briefly sketched but vivid and feel three dimensional. A most of them are second class citizens living in an occupied country you definitely get the feeling they are lying through their teeth in a lot of the public interactions. The few candid conversations we get show a mix of collaborators and people just trying to survive. The occupiers run the gauntly from slimy to clueless to patronizing. I did like Lady Melody, who is a well meeting Noble who just wants to help the poor barbarians embrace the light of true civilization and who I don’t think understands why most of the Maskamere’s she talks to would - rainydayyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I picked this up and could NOT put it down. It's a classic trope, as said by previous reviewers, but that does not take away from the uniqueness or complexity of this at all! Best enemies-to-lovers novel I've read on RR for quite a while, and the characters are truly something to love.
- TynianRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Story is a classic trope: magical matriarchy gets ran over by technological patriarchy.
Fmc is a beautiful young magician who catches the eyes of the new prince and becomes his prisonner.
Characterisation is well done, writing is immersive and with no typos or grammatical shennanigans.
Most of the story is the interaction between fmc and male main antagonist, with feelings slowly getting in between their opposed goals: resistance vs invader.
Expect spying, court intrigue, lies and plotting, with dancing bals and charming prince with a bit of poison here and there.
Very enjoyable read so far, my single worry is that the story takes a hasardous turn
When it becomes a time loop.
It takes away a lot of the edge, suspens and stakes, not even mentionning the relationship built between fmc and male interest.
There are very few timeloops done well in my experience, but i hope for the best with this story.
Tl dr : a well executed fantasy romance.
