Description
My name is Mars. I didn't want to write this, but no one believed me. Not my mom, not my "dad," not even some of my closest friends in the world. Certainly not the police. Certainly nothim. I'm not going to excuse what I did. I'm a liar thrice, a thief twice, and a menace to society. Before all of that though, I was just another teenager who wanted a chance at a better life; nevertheless...
power beckons...
love beckons...
The Island beckons.
And I answered the call.

- The OxRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I cannot honestly say I understand what the hell is going on with the plot of Trashy. I didn't even fully comprehend that Mars was male until the third chapter. (I see it in the tags now, but it wasn't obvious to me till the 3rd chapter from the 1st person POV)
I will say, the writing is excellent, and the protagonists inner voice is distinctive and relatable. They don't really understand what's going on either, so this might be OK. There is something mysterious and ominous going on, but it is way more subtle a start than the typical "System Apocalypse" first chapter of a lot of RR fare, so this is going to have a hard time getting eyeballs on it.
What is so interesting to me is how fabulously well Mars Is Real has captured the angst, confusion, and bouts of ennui many American teenage boys experience as they are about to embark on freedom and living the rest of their lives. It might seem exciting and liberating at times, but also terrifyingly daunting. You feel unheard, misunderstood, overlooked. You resent the people around you for not hearing you, misunderstanding you, overlooking you. Especially your loved ones and whoever you happen to be crushing on.
The really poignant way Mars' crush on Allie is described, his fascination and frustration with her is a bit of fantastic writing.
And behind all this is a hint of ominous dread. Some bizarre, almost Lovecraftian surreal horror hiding in the background. What is that music on the Trashy album? What is up with his mom's boyfriend? The bizarre website for that school out west? Some things don't add up, and Mars is both aware of them and almost subconsciously avoiding confronting them, as if his deepest self knows there is horrible things around the corner, and he wants to savor the bittersweet normalcy he's still living in?
Got to give it up to Mars is Real for such a great bit of writing.
