Description
Sometimes, all you need is a villain. Especially one that can summon monsters.
Théo's world is crumbling. Literally. Floor 0 of the Tower is slowly deteriorating due to the Tower's overpopulation and mismanagement. When he “accidentally” stumbles onto power, he gains the chance to do something about it. Join him on his awesomely written, trope-filled quest to save the Tower by destroying the two things he loves most: peace and quiet.
Caution! This story may contain:
- Jabs at other stories.
- Idiots.
- Really bad jokes.
- Shitty dialogue.
- The death of a thousand peasants slowly eaten by a summoned slime.
(I put the warning tags in case creativity leads me in a certain direction.)

- just add wolframiteRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Let's see here... Monster evolution? Check. Gratuitous semi-offscreen violence? Check. Demon woman who acts entirely self-serving and provides an experienced foil to the merry band of humans? Check.
There's so many possible inspirations, it feels like its own thing. Perhaps it's the regular use of tropes and cliche to ease the reader into the world, or the fact that nothing ever written has been wholly original, but there's that slight bit of familiarity that makes the story... approachable.
Oh yeah, checklist. No detectable errors of grammatic nature. The setting comes pre-baked, and the bottom layer is seasoned with this one simple trick: crime! Will it ever have a more complex palate? Who knows, but eventually we'll find out. The characters are standard slum-dwellers, but feel self-inserty in their awareness of references and cliches. One chapter literally ends with a character declaring "dramatic seque."
Final verdict pending revision: Hey guess what, it's pretty good. - Jack0fheartRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Tower in Shambles: Population Control is an engaging and hilarious adventure that will keep readers hooked with its witty satire and thrilling tower-climbing action.

His relationship with his friends and their banter add a comedic edge to the story, making it all the more enjoyable.
In conclusion, Tower in Shambles: Population Control is a highly entertaining and well-written story that is sure to captivate fans of Summoner, Anti-Hero, Tower Climber Adventure, and LitRPG genres. I highly recommend this story for anyone looking for an engaging and enjoyable adventure! ♥ - NoissarRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The first to the 14th chapter hold true.
I felt that the spirit, energy, pace whatever you want to call it lined up perfectly the whole way through. I was onboard within the first three chapters and after that made it to the 14th in a flash.
The real test on this one is going to be how well this current state can be held onto and if there is a shift in any way how far it goes from the current formula. - ScarletpathRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Update: The author contacted me and asked how to improve. My suggestions weren't very high quality, but the improvement in the story was. I no longer have any complaints, so rating moved from two stars up to 5. Old review preserved in the spoiler below.
With the comedy placed better, this story truly shines. Makes me want to write something similar. Not that it's likely I actually will, but still. It's a good fic.
I like serious stories. I loke crack. I do not like serious stories that rapidly devolve into crack. This story started out fairly promising. A very interesting premise that I'd love to read about; What happens if monsters in a tower type story don't despawn, and instead keep spawning? And no one kills them? The writing might not have been perfect in the first chapters, but more importantly, the story was interesting.
However, after about 18 or so good enough chapters, the story breaks apart. The author stopped taking it seriously or something. Now it's all cheap laughs and jokes at the expense of a good story. If you like that sort of thing, power to you. I do too. Just don't promise an entirely different type of story and then change in the middle. - StyxFiskRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love slimes so this story already has a leg up in my rating, but honestly it just reads like a really nice dinner.
lots of light fun bits for an entree, some deeper and sometimes darker parts for the main, and lots of fun system messes for the desert with some unexpected tower politics as a nice coffee post meal.
not sure how much sense that analogy is going to make to you reader of my review, but I definitely can’t recommend giving this a read enough. If you enjoy LitRPG, slimes, tower climbers you will enjoy this I think.
key value for me is a MC who isn’t some edge lord or power obsessed monk with no personality, the characters largely read like realistic people in a way that for me makes it read more organically then a lot of stories on RR. - bnazRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I enjoy the premise. Characters are entertaining and motivations are clear. The class system is interesting. Personally I could do with more stats but that's just a personal preference as the lack of stats hasn't negatively impacted the story. Excited for more. What do I need to do to get more chapters!?
- dragon723Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0A great story this far. Characters are flawed, their actions don't always make sense to me and I sometimes think "Yikes, that's a stupid thing to do".
So why five stars? Because the characters feel human, they feel like these are things they would do if presented with the same problems in real life, assuming they are toughened up from a rough life in the slums and lack any perspective from education. Which they are and which they do. If anything they are probably a bit too sophisticated for slumkids that never got an education.
They are villains trying to make the world a better place in their own way. Not with perfect insight but by taking action and ruthlessly pursuing what they think needs to be done.
I love it and I hope it blows up in their faces down the road :) - OrthorosRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5We all know how a tower climb story works. Climb ever higher to get stronger, to climb higher. While at the top awaits the ultimate reward for our heroes. The system in use is pretty interesting as well. For every floor you climb, you get a free level up! You can level most skills by using them, but you gotta climb for those juicy main skills to level up.
In order to get access to your class and become a proper climber, you have to reach floor 2. You have to fight some slimes on the first floor, but if you gear up and bring a party, shouldn't be an issue, right?
Wrong.
This particular tower is being managed horribly, which caused floor 0 to become a shadow of its former self, crime and poverty rampant. The only escape is to climb, but even that is almost impossible. You see, ages ago people stopped climbing, and there is no sane spawn limit on the amount of monsters that can spawn. So the tower kept spawning them until they covered every inch of available space, with billions more in the backlog just waiting to take the spot of a defeated slime.
So how in the hells do you climb this monstrosity of a tower? Well, to find out, you'll just have to read ;) - GeneralFoxIronwoodRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Great progression of the story. Interested to see what the MC's solutions are in the current circumstances but it seems there will be an extensive break or re-write at some point based on the Ch 59 author note and their responses to the comments. In any case, we shall see what they do!
- Stonefox777Royal Road★★★★ 3.5The MC and his pals are well written, with a believable dynamic that can host different plot points later. The system is wonderful, and you get a sense of how the tower would have originally worked, and how that is failing now. The premise is interesting, and is for the most part done amazingly, with a sense of progression, and ways that they can improve the current situation, although their why is more implied, it makes sense. There is some meta humor, with pointing out tropes, or scene layout, but it doesn't bash you over the head with it, so it's all in good fun. The biggest problem with the story is the bouncing between perspectives, some chapter having around 4 different plots happening at once. I would recommend that the author instead cut back on tertiary character pov's, and make the pov's of the main characters, when split, into chapters in their own right (I.e. having one chapter on the summoner, one on the geomancer. This would also apply to the church and the cult/gang). This is something that could lead to problems down the line, as the more characters introduced, the more pov's, the less coherent your story. Overall, an interesting premise, charming characters, gripping plot, with a possible pitfall later for the author to look out for.
