- Grimlock007Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is an interesting story about a boy who wants to be a legendary healer. It's a light read, and well worth your time. Unfortunately the author seems to have abandoned the series about halfway through book 4. I'm really hoping he picks it back up, because I've been enjoying the story so far.
- ShyBoyRoyal Road★★★ 3.0"Mild" is the word I'd use for everything here. Mild conflicts, mild Tosin, mild cast, and mild everything. Unfortunately, it's much too mild, so much in fact, it became bland. I'll perhaps pick it up later, as this is not the first time I've put it down. Or perhaps this time it'll stay down.
Due to this being a stub, I've read books 2-4 (or that part of four that actually came out so far).
Ratings and their rationale:
1. Style: decent, but interwoven worldbuilding elements raised it to good. I liked anciennes, both the word and the concept. I liked flagstaff and how it was used. Casting the mana (and other) bars was somewhat confusing at first, but later became quite cool and it's helluva descriptive, must say. Strong point of the writing here. The alliances with deities was a fairly interesting concept too, must say. It was refreshing to see that deities aren't the great evil of the world for once.
2. Story: non-existent. This book is read more like a very long plot synopsis for a game. Or a walkthrough. But fictionalized. A long time ago a fanfic for Mortal Kombat fell into my hands. The action took place between Mortal Kombat 1 and 2. Fanfic tried explaining how things happened, why some characters disappeared and some appeared and some changed, etc, etc. I recalled it while reading this book here, for the feeling was equally tepid... and mild. There are fights, and they aren't badly described, but... it's fight X in a dungeon. And the dungeon is just some dungeon, between dungeon 15 and dungeon 17. There is academy, and they teach about the world. Tosin absorbs mana. Since the road to legendary hero is long, there's many dungeons. And much mana to absorb. Wait, new monster in a dungeon. And now next dungeon is of swamp type. Days of exploring. Boss monster. Killed before second phase. Loot.
Admittedly, the above is NOT doing the book justice. The writing doesn't bore so much as I did, but it doesn't excite. Well, it does: mildly.
3. Grammar: good. I've still sp
