Dr. Laura Brandie is ready to change the world.
She's the lead researcher behind the KSE, a revolutionary cure for paralysis and neurodegenerative conditions. And now, by good fortune, she's found the perfect candidate for her first human trial: a man who suffers fromlocked-in syndrome.
Brett Harmon's paralysis is total: he can't move his arms, legs, torso, neck, or face. To the outside world, he's little more than a statue that breathes... but Dr. Brandie's KSE might be the miracle that allows Brett to run again.

- DieselPodlesniRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Really intriguing premise, raises big ethical questions in the way that only good scifi can. I'm not keen to give anything away, but if you've ever known or feared truly debilitating illness--and wished for a solution--this will keep you up at night. It feels corny to say it would fit right in with "The Twilight Zone" --the OG or the Jordan Peele reboot--"To Run Again" does precisely what I want science fiction to do: raises questions about deep-seated fears of the age we live in and isn't shy about giving some messy, uncomfortable, alarming and truthful answers.
- FearTheEarsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Science Fiction is more than cool laser beams and space ships. It's also about asking questions about humanity. "Is this change to society a good one?" or "is what I want to be true, actually true?" The author brings these questions to bear in their books, and I don't want to spoil this one.
It's really good, I would recommend it. - GLBertrandRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Woah, this was fantastic. Would fit very well in a collection of professionally published short horror stories.
I was thoroughly impressed by a number of aspects that give this story a veil of realism. Not sure whether the writer comes from a medical background or not, but how he uses and expresses medical jargon gives the premise both a sense of scientific authenticity while being easy to digest by the average reader. The story overall is impeccably written, and while at first the plot's time skips were a little too fast for my personal tastes (I would have appreciated his first movements if they were given weight, as opposed to throwing him directly on the treadmill), I grew to appreciate the author's writing pace.
The idea of a revolutionary technology gone wrong is a staple for a reason, and this author hits all the beats with perfection. His characters are very strong and fleshed out as well. In particular, Dr Brandie is dynamically portrayed as a flawed person, but very understandably so given her background and own genetic family history. The subject of this experiment, Brett, was also given a ton of personality despite his complete lack of facial expression, no doubt helped by how his mother provides characterization. It goes a long way in making the reader care about his fate.
The pacing in this is probably my favorite aspect. There are so many red herrings that pay off in magnificent ways. The short builds to an absolutely horrifying and visceral conclusion that I'm gonna be thinking about for a long time.
Massive props. This story is too good to be able to read for free. - MK bk-201Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0A damn good short story about a doctor obessed with finding the cure to disminished motor functions, scarred by her mother´s condition and the fear that she might suffer the same fate she pours all she has into creating the solution, the consequences be damned. The ending leaves it a little open and would have loved to see a better wrap up epilogue, nevertheless is a great story.
- RooSkdoo145Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am entirely blown away by this story. The premise was incredible, with a believable plot, one that doesn't seem outside what might be in store for our future.
The characterizations were phenomenal. In such a short amount of time, I truly felt the nuances of the characters. The interplay between them was remarkable.
And then. The horror of it. Such a truly chilling ending, one that will stay with me for a long time. This reminds me of something Junji Ito might write. A perfectly packaged, incredibly delivered bit of horror.
Thank you so much for writing this! I'm looking forward to diving into your other works! - ToldiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This was a great short story: the pacing, the plot, the characters - everything added up to make it greater than the sum of its parts. It critically analyzes the benefits and real costs of scientific progress, especially when we are personally invested in a certain outcome. It gives the mind-body debate another topic to disect. If the blurb caught your interest, give the story a shot: it is well worth the 1,5 - 2 hours it will take for you to finish it.
- WillowUfgoodRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So this took me between an hour and two to finish.
(I recommend reading the work before reading my review because I spoil the interesting part about thing book, but I think it's worth your time.)
To put it frankly I really thought this was going to be an happy sci-fi story but that's the isue I didn't realize that the writer was the same one as early adopter. If only I knew... I would have realized that the ending was going to be sad.
So in the spoiler part here I come :
The final scene was really heart breaking, I mean the body simply walking away with a limp head that's goes directly in the horror realm of my head. I can't imagine a worse fate than the impossibility of controlling your own body that's really a fate worse than death for me.
That hit me really bad because I was so happy when the guy could walk once again, I don't know everything that relate to health issue really touch me.
So once again that's a great work author!
