Description
It is the late 23rd century. By travelling through the mysterious dimension known as Dark Space, the human species took its first tentative steps beyond their home system. Soon enough, they discovered that not only were they not alone in the universe, it was decidedly crowded. Many species call the Orion Arm home, and humanity is just one small fish in an unspeakably vast pond. Despite this, humanity has proven its mettle in the war with the vile Diln decades ago, and now has taken its rightful place as a meaningful member of the wider interstellar community expanding rapidly further and further outwards, setting up new colonies and outposts farther than ever thought possible before, and all of it protected by the brave Astronauts and Rangers of the United Nations Space Force. But things change. The ancient and mysterious species known as the Ivos have staked a claim on humanity's territory. Their motive is unknown, their capabilities a terrifying mystery. Fleets mobilize and troops arm themselves in preparation for the worst war since the Diln looted and slaved their way through human space decades ago. But how do you fight a war against a civilization that was still travelling the stars when yours was figuring out fire?To Fight the Dark is a completed Semi-Hard sci fi space opera novella that pits humanity against impossible odds and portrays the defiant struggle that follows.

- Cillian_Ulif_MarkinsonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Best space oprea I've read on this website and with few exceptions anywhere else.
The balance between characters and the overarching war is done well and unlike many the brutual reality of what space warfare would likely be like realistically is made clear and justified. Solid read for what chapters are there and criminially underread for the quality of this work. - S.N. KeirsteadRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0To Fight the Dark is a hardcore sci-fi story from the get-go. Spaceships. Alien species. Diplomacy. If that is your thing, then this is the story for you. There is an intricate world here with long and complex lore to it. There is a lot to take in from page one, so it is the kind of story that you will have to pay attention to.
It also feels like a "realistic" take on what a futuristic war would look like. Armies are outclassed. Casualities in thousands or even tens of thousands happening in seconds. It's very a brutal take on intergalactic war.
The characters also have intricate backstories as well. Just try not to get too attached to anyone. It is a war, after all. A definite recommend for anyone that loves world building and hard science fiction. - BullerRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Ignore title/review itself.
When checking through the style of this story, I couldn't help but be reminded of the small part of the internet dedicated to pictures of fat cats. This might be a peculiar way to look at the fiction, but it is nonetheless one I will stand by.
When reading this story, a large portion of it will be dedicated to world-building. Not the worst choice to have, seeing as the author is writing in a genre built around such a thing, but it indeed still a trait that needs to be watched out for. While there is some amount of action and conversation, both are either much too short or too long-drwan to really put one into immersion.
Good enough for me tho. 4.5/5 - eric_riverRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is different than most stories you will ever read
every chapter brings in a new character to lead
first and foremost this book is a sci-fi tale of war
we learn less of characters than of what they fight for
The style is very interesting, and it caught me off guard
and that’s hard to to, as I am quite a well-read bard
the narrator jumps all over the universe in space
capturing snippets of a war for the human race
The story is quite simple, but it’s epic how it’s told
it’s not just a tale, but something interesting and bold
compiled within are samples of a long war’s history
told with characters who we get to know well quickly
The grammar is superb, the writing is a selling point
regardless of your tastes, the writing will not disappoint
exposition flows and captivates the reader’s mind
all that’s left are several typos lingering behind
The characters do come and go but all of them are great
they’re all deep and detailed, and you’ll care about their fate
they’re all very human, and I really must admit
I wish we could follow just one of them for a bit
Anyways, I recommend this book, it’s worth your time
the story is unique, and all the writing is sublime
I do prefer to follow characters throughout a plot
I read this mostly for the prose (I don’t say that a lot)
