    The story leans into the situation fairly slowly, it does a fair amount of exposition and thinking without really getting to the heart of the matter right off the bat. With constructions like 'blood of an ally' it also removes key emotional attachments from the MC to said 'ally'. It wasn't John who just got taken out, or a love interest - it was 'nameless extra'. All this while we are in Zaiah's own head. He talks to himself. The drive to fight not coming from some sacrifice or hope - he's trying to summon it up. It makes the piece weaker and short stories are all about impact. This was good, but fairly passive in its execution.
