I thought this chapter introduced it's information in crude sentances, but it was much better than a plain old infodump. The characters were not extremely compelling, but they did obviously care about their child. Personally, I thought that this was a pretty tragic backstory that could be worked well into a story, but as of now, mainly serves to make the reader lose interest. If there is already all this amazing technology and magic such as portals and dimensional travel, I don't see why the parents can't also escape.
