Description
Tinea...had an ugly childhood full of pain and abuse. It taught her how to fight and survive, how to run and hide and cut ties. It didn't teach her much else. So she'd ran. Crossed an ocean, grown up, and discovered the world. She'd made her life her own. Soul-deep pain notwithstanding, she'd fought to be happy. Until the rabid aliens invaded her neighborhood. Smoking rifle in hand and still coming up short, she'd made a life-ending choice...and was rewarded beyond her wildest dreams. Or, perhaps exactly to her wildest dreams; dreams of a chrysalis, come to life through DNA-changing Vanguard science. Reborn, a whole new journey awaits the warrior looking for connection, for togetherness. It just so happens, an opportunity lies not far. What to expect: Plot is discovered, not designed.Consequences shape events, rather than scenes being designed to push plot. Characters, relationships, and setting are particularly strong, plot can get WILD in amazing, unexpected ways. - A serious approach to transforming male to female, using sci-fi DNA morphing. Tinea starts out as Aden, but quickly gains his wishes.- Maturity from both leads- WLW/GL/Sapphic: from the soft and cuddly, to the (clearly marked) explicit- Gratuitous violence against unthinking aliens- Get points, buy gear- Cybernetic upgrades- Organic augmentations- Occasional slowburn sections- Many, many chapters This work is set in the universe of RavensDagger'sStray Cat Strut, but it ISN'T necessary to read that first. Further,Tinea and Leahhas been recognized officially as canon by master Raven himself. Cheers! I develop my own plot and characters. Thank you for reading. :) The cover art was drawn for me byJero, who can be found on my Discord server - links in each chapter. Royalroad staff has designated this story as Original so that I may post my Ko-Fi link in the chapters.TnLis still a fanfiction-slash-extended-universe-slash-canon-thing for Stray Cat Strut, regardless of the "Original" tag. :)

- KasidyaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Reviewed at Chapter Sixty-one: Xenocide VIIThis story is set in Ravensdaggers Stray Cat Strut universe. As such the threat to humanity is the same, and the story follows two new Vanguards who were kidnapped and manged to free themselves in a bunker in the middle of an incursion. The story focusses as much on the character psychology and development as it does on the fighting, so it is slower than SCS as far as action goes, but delves deeper into the inner workings of the characters. It is a take on a first person transgender man who is able to become the person he/she wants to be, through the alen tech available to Vanguards. It also appears to be a story of developing romantic feelings for the first person the main protagonist meets in her new body. It will be interesting to see if a healthy relationship can develope between them, once they get out of danger and resume their lives. At least they have their new lives as Vanguards in common, otherwise I would think that the situation forcing them together wouldn't make a lasting relationship possible once the battles are over. As the story progresses, more will be revealed. The styles is first person, dual perspective and I believe it works well for the type of story the author is writing. The grammar and spelling are very good, no jarring interruptions in the flow. The characterizations seems good so far, but my understanding of trans people isn't what it could be. I am learning more from the comments than from the story. As such, i have come to the realization that each person is unique and it is not a one story covers all viewpoints, so I believe way the author presents Aiden is well done. Leah comes off as a mother first and a Vanguard second, which is a fitting foil for Tinea, who is just learning to actually live as a woman.
- AliapanaceaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm honestly, extremely impressed with this story. As a trans woman, I appreciate a good trans GL wish fulfillment story, and this has completely eclipsed what I expected going it.The technology and item descriptions are MUCH chunkier then SCS, but that both is a result of the passion the author feels for this setting and the major difference in personality to Cat that the two leads have.I have a deep appreciation for how dark the story actually gets, and how it handles the darkness of the SCS world without going total grimdark. SCS can be a tiny bit dark in places, mainly looking at the cold, callous nature of corporations and how it has skewed cat's perception on the world. T&L takes a different route, placing aside the wider reaching world building of SCS to have a more intimate story between the two leads, of the tragedy that brings them together and the struggles that they will eventually have to return to.The two leads have great chemistry, and something that I think stands out to me the most (I might be insane on this) is the difference in how their particular observations to situations are. Tinea is written as a poet, someone who looks at the intrinsic beauty of the things before her, and the way that she describes them in turn can be esoteric and a bit confusing, but understandably so, once you get to learn more about her. Leah on the other hand, is a much simpler and easier to understand character, but serves as an important foil to someone like Tinea. The contrast they create is fantastic, to say the least.Something that I think would be lesser appreciated is the difference in "power" between Tinea and Cat. Seen from afar, Tinea seems extremely overpowered, but that is, well, established extremely well through how they fight. Cat as a protagonist is a teenager with power suddenly dropped into her lap and she grows to use it decently well. Tinea takes the idea of power being dropped into her lap and uses it to a great degree, the experience (and trauma) of
- Ethenia VermillionRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Updated review as of chapter 89.So, Eleeyah, here we go again. :)A few chapters ago I reviewed your story, and gave you a 4.5/5, as I felt the pace was a bit too slow. With this new review I want to point out that I had forgotten about this actually being a fan fiction, and that affects how much you can progress the 'main story'.Style:I'm going to be a bit unfair, and subtract half a star for very subjective reasons. Tables. They can be perfect if you have large amounts of information to display, which you sometimes do. I also know this is sort of an 'in-world' choice, as Tinea prefers the tables. I think this is the only thing I do prefer about SCS, the purchases are displayed as text, which I subjectively feel creates better immersion.Having said that, and being a bit unfair, I want to tell you, and anyone who might be reading this that your overall style is absolutely amazing. It's a first person story most of the time, switching to third person when we're in "Leah's pov". I love this choice of style, as it makes us live through the eyes of Tinea, and makes it very clear the story is about her.Sometimes you have 3-4 different dialogues going on at once. Tinea, Leah, Tynea, Ypsi. Even when there are so many different inputs and sources of information, you display and write it in such a way that I'm never left wondering who's saying what, and this just shows your mastery over your chosen style.Grammar: There's honestly nothing to say besides the fact that I've never once during my time reading this story had my brain go "oh, there's a typo". Any mistakes that are published are quickly fixed. 5/5Story: Last time I reviewed it, as I previously mentioned, I forgot this was a fan fiction, technically. This just goes to show how invested I am in your story. We are still in the start of the story from what I feel, yet there are multiple different events introduced that leads to different sub-plots. There are at least five different sub-plots introduced, yet never has it
- Commissar_PopsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0At first I was a a tad leery about reading it because its a fanfic and I haven’t really read fanfics before. So my knowledge of fanfics was basically just the mainstream view of a horribly written story with lots of enthusiasm and no refinement. But honestly I am glad that I was wrong. This story is great. It has a definitely different feel than Stray Cat but I think thats a good thing. Author isn’t trying to hard to keep on with the exact same feel as source material and is therefore more able to give their own twists and feel to the story.
I really love how the characters are not well adjusted adults, with these horrible backstories. They are slightly broken, with their own problems, mental and physical. I like how they both see they have co-dependant tendencies and know they need to handle them and talk about it, like you should in a relationship. And don’t just have it handwaved or something thats just “oh look how tragic my chars backstory is,” and never touch on it again.
I love how Tinea has gone from this super stoic char and has basically become this cute and mischievous flirty character who is happy and a little bit of a battle junkie, but still keeps that child like “i wanna have wings when I grow up” feel as well. I also love the random nods to SCS that get thrown in “bargain rods of god” almost had me in tears.
Overall, this story is one of the better stories I have read. Definitely would pay for it at B&N or kindle/audible. I will admit to having put off new chapters of SCS to catch up on this story. I eagerly await more chapters, and simply CANNOT WAIT to see Tinea’s interactions with Leah’s littles. I expect there to be cuteness overloads, and crazy shenanigans with how mischievous Tinea is, especially with her tail and possibly wings. 10/10 would recommend to random strangers on the internet 😂 - DaithiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0First things first. If you are waiting because the description says its on temporary hiatus.
DONT.
Read it now!
I waited because I thought edits might be over soon. And I didn't want to read pre edits. But a lot is already edited! So don't be dumb like me and jump right in. A lot of the chapters are already edited and honestly the quality pre and post, is great! Plus the author deserves a chance.
Second, I wasn't sure what to think about the theme of gender change and accompanying identity transition. Honestly had not thought about it too much before and wasn't sure if I was prepared to confront/ enjoy it. I am a flaming cis het and wasn't sure I could relate.
Frankly NON ISSUE. I wanted to be open and supportive but I didn't know it it would be my jam. Not sure about other stories in this milieu but I thought it was dealt with so naturally and honestly that I appreciateed being informed, enlightened, and entertained.
Overall a fantastic story. Period. Check it out.
Story is a healthy balance of slice of life/ relationship study and action. If you like SCS this is a great addition. If you haven't read it yet, try this anyway! Right now it's been a major bottle episode (very self contained).
Style is mostly first person with modest third for the other main characters.
Grammer is great. I am easy to please here. But I was never derailed and lost immersion! I think English is a second layer for the author but I could never tell.
Very worth a read! - DellathiaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Great writing with interesting characters. The fact that we've got a moth guardian and a spider guardian is quite funny.
Starting to stretch narrative coincidence a little bit though. At this point we have two people who were supposed to be unrelated who just both happened to be samurai, both happened to get kidnapped by a corporation I am both were directly and indirectly involved with a kidnapping mission.
Seems to me like the cult that Tinea was in it's going to have to be in on it along with whatever's going on with Leah's 'people" - EiferRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This has been a interesting read for me so far. It's been a bit jarring, going into the stories world after reading Stray Cat Strut and having a certain expectation of pacing and action focus.
That's obviously on me as a reader, but I thought it should be mentioned for others that might have certain expectations or have similar experiences where authors share world building. This is slower paced and more introspective. Basically the direct opposite of what Cat is, with lot's of thought and brainstorming before taking action.
After getting used to it, the contrast is rather refreshing.
One thing this story does very well is portraying the characters as more than their mental issues, as we so often see in other stories. Shy characters that are shy 100% of the time in any and all settings, anxious characters that for some reason never developed coping mechanisms, healthy or otherwise.
The author have also, in my opinion, managed to capture the essence of the internal struggles of the MC and their partner in war and continuously surprises me with how real they can convey the emotions of a scene, be it during a fight, a moment of relaxation, joy or fear. - Ember ShellyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This has so many different things in it that someone like me can relate to. From body dysmorphia to multiple mental entities to trauma and its effects on the psyche. Super well done and explained in a healthy way. I really appreciate this entire story. Not to mention its a fun romp and emotional ride. 👩❤️👩
- Leegionlee XRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really do like this story. Its not what I typically read but I think its well written and interesting. I like both of the main characters. Though I'm unfamiliar with the world this is set it the story is written in a way where I don't feel the need to go and explore the main source material right away. That is a big plus.
