Without any establishing or building up of the character, we get an action opening that is strange and confusing. Why would every person of importance be together in the same room let alone the same battlefield. Why would they be unguarded? The opening really doesn't make a lot of sense and has quite a few errors in the prose that make it awkward. It just struggles to establish itself because there is too much and no context for anything to mean much to a reader at this point.
