- SRCravenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love sci-fi, and this story is everything I could want. After 38 chapters, I'm not sure where this story is building to, but I am very excited to find out.
Style - The writing style in this work was refreshing. The sentences aren't overly complicated, and the vocabulary is perfectly accessible to everyone - as opposed to some sci-fi that gets wrapped up in proving how smart it is (this is not that and it's great). Certain chapters, not to be named to avoid spoilers, also do a wonderful job of evoking emotions in the necessary scenes. The only thing I could do with more of is a little more description of characters, clothing and places, because it's sci-fi and I'm curious about this world.
Grammar - I don't remember seeing a single grammatical error in the 38 chapters I read. Honestly, it doesn't get better than this, folks.
Story - There's a couple different storylines to follow in this work, including a military man on the hunt (Bragg), a government scientist (Halden) and a ship captain who's in deeper than she thinks (Val). All these storylines are great! I'm not sure how they will all intersect, but I'm excited to to see it happen. The pacing in this story is wonderful. A bit of action is sprinkled throughout.
Characters - Through the Stars, Darkly has a great cast of characters. Val and Nim are my favorites, as they have a unique, and consistent dynamic between them, not to mention a super interesting backstory. Halden is also interesting, he has some of the most emotionally evocative scenes, and his story line helps to broaden the reader's understanding of this world and the governmental entities and social structures within it. What can we say about Bragg? Well, he seems like a bad dude with his own intentions. His character archetype is not especially unique (though I suspect his backstory may change this), but he's the kind of guy I love to hate.
THE WORLD: The author does an stellar job of not shoving world-building down the reader's throats. And this sci
