- DerpsterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story has good grammar and unlike what i expected pulled me in with good hooks. The pacing is just right. Also who doesn't love some exploding trees?
I think this story has great potential, so to help it grow i am writing a review just for it even though i never had before.
Just give it a try, if you don't like it then that is fine. I bet you would. - Lucian T. EinarRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall: Throne of the Winter King is a unique and captivating LitRPG that deviates from the typical hero's journey. The story follows a complex protagonist who struggles with morality and becomes an unlikely anti-hero. With its well-paced plot and intriguing magic system, this story has great potential and promises an enjoyable read.
Style: The writing style of Throne of the Winter King is good but could be better. I found it engaging, with good hooks that drew me into the story. However, others may find the style confusing because it may relied too heavily on telling rather than showing, nothing that some good editing can't solve. Overall, the style could benefit from more consistency and clarity, but this is a good beginning.
Story: The story of Throne of the Winter King has an unique take on the LitRPG genre. Instead of following the typical hero's journey, the main character is an anti-hero with a chip on his shoulder. However, the focus on political problems in later chapters took away from the initial adventure and exploration, and the main character's struggles in navigating the political landscape were not as enjoyable to read, perhaps is some of this elements were introduce sparsely from the very beginning, the transition won't be so shocking. Despite this, the story has great potential and offers a fresh perspective on the genre.
Grammar: The grammar in Throne of the Winter King is good so far, with only minor errors and occasional misspellings that did not detract from the overall reading experience. However, there were comments about long run-on sentences and awkward sentence structures that disrupted the flow of the narrative. These grammatical issues could be addressed to enhance the readability of the book. Particularly, I'm not good at spotting or maybe fixing this errors, but I think they will enhance the story.
Character: The main character is relatable, I like his realistic approach, although he might not be as perceptive as you may expect. Furth - MaxLevel0Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This doesn't feel like a typical LitRPG. I mean, the main character gets isekai'd and gets all sorts of power. But the MC isn't a hero. He's a guy with a chip on his shoulder and keeps making enemies. But honestly, that's why I enjoy the story. There's no hero complex. He struggles with his morality, but not from the same angle we've heard a hundred times before.
I want to see how far he goes in his crusade against those who have wronged him. - SenTheSenselessRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5STORY- So, I'm not a big fan of system novel mostly due to the fact they're usually all the same, but I was pleasantly surprised when I read this. First I enjoy the setting so far. Not many system novel put the MC in dangerous lethal climate, so watching him deal with the dangers of it was really fun to see. As for the heart of the story I think I know what the author is going for. Just a simple nice system adventure novel, with the Mc and his wolf friend. Obviously it could change any given moment, but that's what I got so far. I think it would be a good read for people who like system novels and just wanna relax and enjoy the slow progression of a character getting used to the new world.
Speaking of character.... let's get into it.
CHARACTER- I really had no sympathy for the character dying. It felt like he has rich people problems in his past life. Which isnt a bad thing by all means. And tbh you don't need to write an insane heart wrenching back story. He's a realistic approach to a MC who isn't inherently special, I kinda like that realistic approach to the novel. That said, I do agree with the criticism of the mc too. It took him way to long to realize what was going on, he was wasn't focusing on what happened. He was tunnelvisoned. For example what he saw in the TV. If I was in his position I would immediately connect the dots, especially when I see a system in front of me. He could be just dumb and is trying to convince himself that it wasn't the case, but from what he said he has known about the whole system and isekai trope, so I expected him to realize it alot sooner rather than ignore what's right in font of him.
GRAMMAR- Grammer was great, just a few words that didn't fit and a couple grammar/spelling mistakes. Nothing serious enough to distract me from the story.
STYLE- This is what did distract me though. And again this probably just a person taste, or better yet skill issue perhaps, this is just my opinion.
The style was both good in some areas and v - hunters30Royal Road★★★ 3.0The background of the MC is very lackluster but that is ofcourse better than starting with a truck hitting the MC. The system integration was abrupt but the structure defined by author was pretty nice and explanation of Magical abilities was done well. Some abilities like shadow meld were used only for few chapters before taking a backseat. MC had an interesting adventure and exploration going on for first few chapters which was very fun to read.
Now coming to things I did not like so much. Story and exploration moved to foreground in recent chapters in favor of political problems. Usual arrogance and misuse of power by an aristocratic person. But what made it not fun to read was that the MC is not good at navigating the political landscape. Neither is he particularly good at controlling his powers. Nor is he overpowered to overcome his circumstances easily. The system and other limitations on his power seem like a crutch. It is not fun to see the MC of the story suffer and avoid the law. Some parts felt like an obvious flaw where despite having proper evidence everyone in the story just blatantly ignores it. Like they do not even try to fight back against any incorrect claims.
Nonetheless 3 stars for the good design of the magic system and the initial story but the change in focus to politics was not done so well. - PlatiusmanRoyal Road★★★ 2.5Normally I'd bring things up in the comments or explain them with spoiler tags, but the author has made it clear they accept no criticism, so I shall simply leave my honest review.
Style:
Average "tell instead of show" isekai commentary. There are also quite a few awkward sentences interspersed that disrupt the reading flow. It seems like the story lingers on incredibly boring moments and then rushes past anything important or interesting. Like it is afraid to describe something new, but feels comfortable describing something mundane.
Story:
The story writes like it wants to be special and different from other isekai so it put its own spin on the concepts, but didn't think through how everything would actually make sense. The beaten path might be boring and overused, but it's used because all the little issues have already been thought of. Doing something new requires putting in the work to make it all make sense which is evidently not the case here. And so the story can be summed up as a string of plot devices, happening for no other reason than to push the already envisioned plot along, except some of the plot devices fall short of even that.
Character:
So far, boring and without personality. But that might just be because the MC's extended denial smothers in the cradle any chance to really develop his first impression. A big pit fall in many stories is the concept of time. Someone may be in denial for a short while, but when consistent fantastical events happen over the course of days is when the story has yanked too hard on a worn chain. Add on top the nonsense way he behaves and you have an a slightly below average isekai MC.
Grammar:
Normally it's just content of stories that have issues while the grammar is fine, but this story has legitimate issues with sentences. Many sentences are just strung together and clearly should have been broken up but instead form long run-ons. Most of it the grammar is fine and even some of the top novels have an error every once
