Note: This review was written before major changes to the story.  It may not fully reflect the completed book.
For me, this was a very unique story and a fascinating read.  It is a mix of magical fantasy and a Jumanji-style story, with its own little quirks all throughout.  Kai is a classic antihero who must fill the shoes of a leader and find "the black box," a mysterious box with unknown content or purpose.  He is accompanied by a loveable voice in his head that we are meant to believe is just another part of him.  The action is fantastic, the abilities are creative, and the new world to which we are introduced is full of intriguing new wonders.
    Now, for my critiques:
The grammar is not the best, but that's an easy enough fix.
The pacing, while it can be great, can also be rushed.  We readers get to know the world fairly well, but we're rushed into it in the first chapter.  Additionally, we are not acquainted with the characters to quite the same degree that we should be.  What is their past?  What are their struggles?  Who are they?  A good handful of extra chapters about the significant characters (i.e. Xilana, Xitana, and the Elder) would make a world of difference when relating to pacing, connection, and realism.
Speaking of realism, one issue I found was how Kai handled this new world.  So much of it is completely foreign to him.  Especially in the beginning chapters, he needs to question this world.  He needs to keep being shocked and wonder, "Is any of this real?"
These issues accounted for, the story is still a fantastic read, and WithinTheStorm is a very dedicated writer.  His writing gushes with creativity, it's packed with action, and there are a few morals to learn along the way.
