Self-Published

Community Rating

Description

In the near future an explosion at a particle accelerator causes cracks in reality to appear. Around these cracks the zones form. Fog bound areas that create monsters and drive many insane. John Harrington is one of the “lucky” few that can tolerate these zones. Follow him as he travels in to them and faces the horrors with in.

Warring: This story contains graphic violence and profanity. Not for those easily offended.

I have really enjoyed this for a number of reasons. It builds suspense really well while managing to advance the narrative and build the characters. The action scenes are well handled but I really enjoy the world building. While the actual events are firmly in the fantasy realm the reaction and fate of specific countries seems very plausible, especially the French.  One last thing as a Scot I love the idea of Arbroath being a supernatural hotspot. Given how keen Angus Council are on tourism I think they would be advertising the break outs to try and get more visitors and sell some more kippers.

This is a very good start to something with some massive potential and I can't wait to see where it goes.
Defintatly worthy of a 5 star review especially as a first entry into writing for Royal Road, if this fiction continues with this momentum I have a feeling it will go far.

The story so far does a great job of character building whilst doing enough world building alongside to keep the reader invested and aware of situations.
Few grammatical errors, but nothing that can't be polished out
Highly recommended and definitely looking forward to how the story plays out over time

An interesting story for a first time author. I am wondering where the story is planned on going and I am eager to find out. The only down side is a few grammical errors but the author is correcting them when pointed them out to them. I hpe more will comment to help the author.

The MC is somewhere on the spectrum, and this (perhaps) has lead to his ability to face incursion zones that have popped up in response to a bad particle-smashing experiment.
The zones are generally small localised areas that generate small monster populations and some mind-altering effects.  However, they are very dangerous as modern tech does not work in them, and if humans die in them, then the zones undergo rapid growth and threat level.  The mind-altering effects mean that most people cannot enter zones, so governments have turned to the very small part of their populations that can, and use these to enter and fight the zones.  The MC is one of these.
The writing is spare and moves fast, which is great for action sequences.  The action sequences are fantastic.
(That said, I would like to see the MC fighting other things than just undead -- so far he has only faced one other sort of incursion!)
Unfortunately, there are many typos/sentences that need extensive editing with dropped phrases and words.  Still, the style is very good for what it is.  We live in a fast-paced, somewhat cynical monologue in the MC's head, which is great for sharing his growing anger and viewpoint, and even more fantastic for action sequences.
The grammar needs work.  There are numerous typos.  Clauses in sentences are often not set out with any commas and this can break the flow of the sentence for hte reader.  There are numerous dropped words in sentences as well.  Anyway, both of these issues would dissappear with the application of a good editor, without threatening the author's excellent terse style.  That said, the grammars seems much improved in later chapters (maybe from Chapter 13 or 14 and onwards, but I am not sure), and the author mentioned changing his editing process somewhere along the way, so perhpas that is why.
The score is clearly well laid out inthe author's head, although it seems less clear to me as a reader.
The plan seems to be to tell John's story across two book

First point I gulped this all down up to chapter  in one go then scribbled this review out.
This is mostly an enjoyable fast moving action story with an MC who has to heal after his adventures.
The writing is great even if there is some odd punctuation techniques and the occasional damn autocorrect word which is not the word the author meant but sounds similar.
The point I am making is the story was worth continuing past things I would discard other stories chapters earlier.
Looking forward to the story continuing and to see what happens with the MC.
