The Wizard Division

Description
Everyone knows that magic is real, that it's the driving force behind the evolution society has gone through over the past few thousand years.
Everyone gets annoyed by faeries that steal your socks, or swap your car for a carriage, or coat all your food with salt. Because things like that don't matter enough to hide.
Everyone learns about Hitler, the darkest necromancer ever known, who singlehandedly waged war on the rest of the world, in school, and the other similar events in history. Because they were too large to hide.
But for everything else, the veil hides the magic from the mundane. There might be an unlicenced werewolf working as your librarian. Maybe a dragon owns your local banking chain. Maybe the murder victim who was killed in a locked room WAS killed by an angry ghost. Or a shapeshifter. Or the elder Fae. Or a rogue Wizard.
The solution? Everyone knows the answer to that too. The one thing every police department in the world has in common. The Wizard Division.
The L.A.W.D. (Los Angeles Wizard Division) is in for one hell of a ride, when Charlie, a new trainee foisted into the world of magic joins their ranks, and with him a whole host of new and unusual magic sheananigans comes to Los Angeles. Updates twice weekly. Make sure to follow for more updates.

- AkasoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0As far as urban fantasy goes, Wizard Division is on the more believable side of the spectrum. The blurry nature of the separation between mundane and magical definitely helps the fantasy elements blend more seamlessly with the "real-life" aspects of the setting.
The storyline, while still in the early stages of the hero's journey, shows pretty much endless potential thanks to the foundations laid in the early chapters, and the mentor character's sense of humor is always fun.
I'll try to keep up with with this story as best as I can, and so should you. - KingFreshRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Love it so far. Like a Harry Dresden that doesn't have to hide what he is. Would love to see some more characters development and world building.
- SpartanstorytellerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Insanely good with well thought out worldbuilding a protagonist who's life is easy to feel invested in and the best combination of plot action and comedy all typically happening at the same time. My concern going into this was a normal MC surrounded by the bizarre and powerful and while he's not reached his full potential at all he's got a bright future without making him wizardly Superman
- LightningJackRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Just saw this on trending and figured I'd give it a go, love the story and writing style so far. Added to my follow list and looking forward to more!
- tarakisRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0DrakonStorm is a very good writer and is telling a wonderful tale. I like the premise of magical cops in a modern setting. The story is captivating and makes me want more. Charlie the MC is pretty darn good character and the supporting characters are pretty good also. The style and grammar are very well done.
:D CHEERS (c) - OriginalKingDRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I don't recall reading a lot of self aware stories. With good reason, it can be a hard thing to pull off. When done correctly it really is enjoyable to read. The Wizard Division manages to pull it off; even if there are a few hiccups.
I think there is some amazing potential for the story, for all of them. However they seem to just end on a whim and we're pushed into time skips. There's also a few plot holes that never really get answered even many chapters later. The idea of a police procedural in a world of magic is great. Sometimes it feels as if the story is moving way too fast without ever fully developing. I might even be able to live with Charlie as super cop if it slowed down a little.
There's some interesting characters for sure, just not Charlie. Everything seems to land right in Charlie's lap. He's the chosen one, even if there's no prophecy. He's ten steps ahead of the competition, without realizing there's a competition. There are other more interesting characters, but they seem to vanish with no warning.
I could be a little bias, scoring it so high, but this is right up my alley. This is the kind of story I enjoy reading, even it seemed a little rough around the edges at times. - PainGainRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Reviewing 5/5/2020, most recent chapter WANDerin'
I really enjoyed reading this, up until I got to the last chapter. Decent characters, good worldbuilding that's informative but not in your face. Interesting magic and potential.
Spoiler: Spoiler
I like that his sister turns out to be a much more powerful wizard than he is.
It puts the story on track to avoid a lot of bad stereotypes, like making the main character overpowered, can't fail, etc. But it only happened like 2 chapters ago and although it is an important development we haven't seen any follow up because the story is doing flashbacks and stuff. The author can do what he wants, but typically I would think focus on the sister for a chapter or two! There's easy drama and character development there for the taking!
Biggest complaint is the release speed, and I'm not seeing much of an overarching plot yet. I had fun while I was reading the first dozen chapters or so, but with what's going on with the plot now (combined with release speed) I'm not seeing a lot of reason to stick around.
But keep at it! You have a good start here! - ScarlustRoyal Road★★★ 3.0This fiction is as fast as a firebolt.
Recommended for: Anyone after a quick fix light novel that is more about the fantastical world and it's inhabitants than the main plot or characters.
Not Recommended for: People who want a investigative cop drama or development of side characters.
At it's core The Wizard Division is a openly magical urban fantasy with elements of a cop drama although certainly not a traditional one.
The urban fantasy elements are done really well and as I learn about the world that DrakonStorm has written I feel like I am having a blast. This is one of my first urban fantasy fictions but its worldbuilding is living up to the standards I've seen on tumblr.
The storyline is rather lackluster. The plot is consistent and it isn't an entire mess but the main character comes across as slightly OP Gary Stu in how all the story elements come way too convieniently to him.
Spoiler: Expansion on ways the character has seemed like a Gary Stu
He seems way to strong to convieniently win out against the bad guys despite only just learning about magic let alone using it in combat against a being made of magic that destroys stuff constantly.
I could accept him coming out with a higher power level at first than others but the idea that all the spells he is making have not been done before feels just plain dumb at times. Especially in how he made a mana-phone.
That definitely should have been attempted before.
He later figures out how to store spells in the phone instead of a spellbook which seems dumb that no one else could have done it.
If you are expecting good levels of intruige on the cops side of things think again. These cops are terrible at being dectectives as they had all the elements of a connected case and it was left to the MC to realise they were connected days later. No investigation. Just stumbled upon the realisation. The cop side of things comes out more in magical community work and battles so if you can look past the waste of taxpayers money, - Toby ZieglerRoyal Road★★★ 3.0The first thing to really strike me with this story is its different take on mundane versus magical. The normal world knows about magic, but there is no inkling of how much magic is all around and how many people we interact with are actually creatures of myth and legend.
The juxtaposition of being attacked by a fanged werewolf with claws, but "seeing" the event with a mugger and a knife instead sums up the premise of the story setting, I think.
The writing needs a lot of polish, but I was sufficiently entertained I have no regrets for reading this interesting tale. - DUSTYR34PERRoyal Road★★★ 3.0The start was good with some self aware notes and a good premise however this story is brought down massively by the characters.
Spoiler: Spoiler
For example his sister who at the start the narrator insists is smart but then is happy believing that some magic she saw was just some new tech, or the body builder girl who was shown to be thick and slightly racist. Also don't forget the token British guy who is of course part royal blood and speaks like a literal stereotype, all fellow old chap etc. The biggest issue is the main character though. He has a case of no struggle sindrome. There has yet to be an issue that has stopped him for a second. I like a competant person as much as the next person but so far he has had the perfect answer for every situation. Also he is basically signing up for the wizard police, but during his induction/interview he flips off the interviews/reviewers, he has shown no respect to those who will be his future bosses and his actions should result in him being sent out the door.
I'm sure that once the story gets going it will get better but right now it is hard to read because of how jarring the he characters are. Let him fail, don't feel you need to show off the side characters entire personality in one paragraph, build upto them.
As you continue to fight you will improve so don't feel discouraged, these are common issues but they are still important.
i think with some work you could have a very good fiction in the works.
