Description

Fezzik is the bastard son of the current ruler of the Vale Empire, Emperor Grier. After many months of travel he has found himself at the fringes of society, far above the Mist and far from the grasping nobles at the core of the nation. His dream has always been to adventure, and soon he finds himself among a band of likeminded friends. Follow him on a journey of adventure, friendship, and political intrigue, as his past catches up at last. A world of flying islands, magic, actively meddling gods, and the ever present fear of falling, with societies that are currently undergoing the magical equivalent of the industrial revolution.

The warnings are mostly precautionary, the swearing is largely rather mild; one never knows when a particularly foul mouthed sailor might pop in to the story, however!

Set in a world of skyborne islands, meddling deities, and powerful beasts from dark voids, The Vagrant is an interesting tale that follows the fate of Fezzik Menstappen, illegitimate son of Emperor Grier. Brought from squander to prosperity, Fezzik is an oddly endearing character that I have enjoyed immensely during the several-month long culmination of Johiah’s saga. One immensely enjoys Fezzik not only for his odd background and his cheerful bravado but also because, at the heart of his character, we are all reminded of ourselves in his awkward handling of difficult situations. His insistence upon living life at its most challenging and dangerous is something that many can connect with and admire.
In addition to the main character, Joseph’s Haven, where much of the story takes place, is fascinatingly unlike anything else that this critic has read. Populated by quirky characters who surprise one at every new twist and turn of the plot, it is both like and unlike our own familiar world. The very concept of aether, the substance upon which the islands of Vagrant use to maintain their altitude, while not completely new, is frankly fun to consider.
Johiah’s delivery, while rough in some places and often in the newer style that many writers have chosen to assume as their own, furthers the story and provides its own support. As this collection of chapters has already captivated the attention of over eighty individuals within this community, one can only wish the author good luck as they continue forward.
