The Undying Immortal System

Description

Living in a world of cultivators is like walking on the edge of a knife. If you slip, the best result is a deep cut, but the likely result is death. Su Fang is brought into this world completely unprepared, knowing nothing, and lacking any skills to help him. This means only one thing. He is destined to die.

Fortunately, Su Fang is immortal. Not because he cannot die, but because when he does, he un-dies.

In this world, everyone is born with a Golden Finger to help them survive. Su Fang’s blessing is to return to the beginning of his journey after every death. His System provides him credits upon death with which he can purchase absolutely anything, but he is only rewarded enough credits to help him return to the point he died. To advance further, he must rely on himself.

This is both a time loop story and a xianxia story. At different points, one element is more pronounced than the other, but it is always a combination of both.

This can also be considered a slice-of-life story. It isn’t about saving the world or defeating a big bad guy. It is about living life in an unfamiliar world where it can sometimes seem like everyone is out to kill or enslave you.

Expectations:

-Detailed cultivation and crafting.

-Limited fighting scenes through most of the story.

-Slow cultivation progression. Each level will be explored in detail.

-Somewhat unreliable narrator. Cultivation affects the mind, and it will affect the MC’s perceptions of the world. Facts can generally be trusted, but many times there are layers beyond what the narrator sees.

-Xianxia tropes with a world built around them so they make sense. Why do young masters go crazy shouting "You dare!"? Why do their guards willing throw themselves to their death against someone with significantly higher cultivation? All that and more is explained.

-This is a story of cultivation. It has cultivation in the xianxia sense, working to gain strength and power, but, more importantly, it is a story about cultivating the self. Finding ways to make yourself a better version of you.

When I first started reading this, a long, long time ago, I remember feeling something like
"wow, this is nothing like cultivation stories I know"
It was quite different than pretty much anything I had read before. The world is very fleshed out, and though some reviews say there are plot holes (which there probably are), I have been nothing but interested in how it continues. Now, I can say instead
"WOW, this is nothing like cultivation stories I know" (in a good way :P)
I won't act like it's the best thing I've ever read, no idea what the best would be, but I can definitely recommend it to those looking for something FINALLY new and interesting in the Wuxia/Xianxia/Yuanzhu (I think) genres. I think that's what they're called anyway (been a while). I am also a huge fan of time loops in general and that definitely biases me somewhat too :)

I don't quite like time loop genre, but that one hooked me. The MC is not a super mega genius that learn everything in a month or so. He's a lucky man who was gave a opportunity, and you can see his hardworking and good mentality in some parts of the novel. Like, who would timeloop 10 times just to learn how to make a good pill. I love this history, take it author!!!

This is one of the greastest series i have read to date. If you ever tried and enjoyed Arrogant Young Master Template A Variation 4, Cultivation System: Elder Edition or even Unintended Cultivator, then this is the series for you.
So far, there are three Kindle Novels, and three more complete volumes here on Royal Road, with the Seventh in progress, and with no sign of the Author intending to quit anytime soon.
Before coming here, to this series, I was through 7 novels of Unintended Cultivator, then i needed a little break. Then i found Elder Edition, which i feel is the natural successor to Arrogant Young Master. Having read everything on Royal Road, i found out the authors Patreon had over a hundred additional chapters, but at £30 per month to read that far in, i decided to pay for a month, then would wait three months before signing back up, as I am not able to pledge at that amount every month.
So, i read everything, and needed a new fix. Shopped around a few novels, and eventually found  Undying Immortal System. But i was stymied from reading further when I found out the first three books was on the Kindle. I have kindle Unlimited, so thought, what the hell, and booked it out (he, he, dad joke, you have to laugh, its mandatory).
And you know what? I finished the first book, and immediately bought all three books, its was that excellent. And no joke, it only took me three days to read the next book. And for reference, it will take me between 1-2 weeks reading a book, as i’ll put it down and do something else in between chapters. And for book three, i nearly finished in one sitting. Between 05:30am till 00:30 am, 18 hours or so, i nearly finished book three. About 86% of the way there. Time for some lunch and pee breaks, but i was so close.
But enough of the hype. The first three books were absolute masterpieces, among some of the best works RoyalRoad has ever seen. Mother of Learning, i thought was the gold standard for timeloop stories. But This, Undying Immort

On the first glance, this story is a simple mix of most popular themes: time loop, litrpg system and xianxia. However, this story develops amazing concept of (SPOILER OF CHAPTER 10)
forcing various emotions and thoughts on people.
With such theme, all time loops feel fresh and the main character has to constantly struggle to achieve his goals.
This makes a very good foundation for this book. The author skilfully manages to introduce standard xianxia tropes (like sects) and mix them with various ingredients to make them interesting.

    This story is amazing.
First good thing is that the time loop isn't challenged by someone remembering it. Which is something I hate.(Well the heavenly and earthly Dao does but they are kinda just there and aren't an enemy. )
Second Good thing is the challenges. Making challenges in a timeloop can be difficult/annoying. Some authors add a challenge by adding something that ignores the timeloop in someway. Which kinda defeats the purpose of it. Here the challenges are simple how to get stronger.
One bad thing is why Su Fang is cultivating. It's To get stronger...But why? Each of his goal relate to cultivation but their's rarely a reason of getting stronger other then just getting stronger.

I'm a firm believer that every story has an audience and that no story interests every audience so I'm going to try to give enough information for other people to decide whether this story is for them. Fair warning, I only managed to read part of the way through Volume 2 before I couldn't make myself read any more.
The writing style starts off a bit rough and gets better after the prologue chapters. I didn't notice many grammar mistakes. The major aspects that are very much YMMV are the main character and the plot.
The main character is very focused on improving himself, and he generally doesn't pay much attention to other people beyond what he needs to for his goals.
At the point where I quit reading, Su Fang had finally taken action to improve his future interactions with people, but he had also badly wronged someone who helped him a lot. I have no idea how his initiative turned out because I couldn't make myself read any more.
Don't read this story hoping for fun character interactions, but consider giving it a shot if you like reading about someone who constantly strives to excel in his crafts.
As for the plot, it feels like the aspects for the story are at odds with each other. The System gives Su Fang points whenever he dies. That means that he gets points often towards the beginning of the story because he keeps messing up and then rarely as he starts living longer and longer lives. If you enjoy reading about him improving himself through hard work and study, then this should appeal to you. However, cultivation affects the mind, and Su Fang's interactions with others are often affected negatively for many, many chapters until he dies and resets.
At the point where I stopped reading, Su Fang had also finally taken action to prevent this from happening, but I have no idea how it turned out.
The time loops also don't feel like they're utilized as much as they could be. When I envision time loops, I imagine the character trying the same thing over and over again,

    Good:
The writing is solid, and the story does explore some interesting/curious outcomes that you don't see in more traditional cultivator stories without getting too meta about it.
This cultivator's plot armor doesn't necessary let them save the day at the last minute, but let them explore some paths to there sometimes gruesome end.
    Okay:
Lots of interesting characters but few stick around, wish the MC had more interesting relationships/interactions.
Interesting  way to approach a OP character, that doesn't necessary feel like a OP character
    Not a fan:
The system - For me, it feels like too much of a Mcguffin,  one of the things that I enjoy about time-loops is seeing the MC figure things out and finding fantastic opportunities that normally would be impossible.
Both time-loop and cultivator stories can struggle with giving depth to or developing characters,  you can see it at times.
    The Grind!

If I have to rate books 1 & 2 alone, I would give it 4 stars. It was good since mc does not have much system credits/points yet. He still makes an effort to learn skills from scratch like with alchemy.
The rest of the books are 2 stars. By this point, mc has stack up system credits so the story became lazy and boring. Mc just spends credits to increase comprehension skills so there’s not much learning.
One thing I really hated about this novel is that there’s almost no limits he can ask the system. The limits are not even explained by the author. At the beginning, mc can’t request cultivation books. In book 3, mc was able to ask system books regarding soul cultivation. Plenty of authors fails to establish a good limitation. Close to no limitations make a story boring.
I’m in the middle of Book 4 and decided to drop this novel.
