The Undertaker's Library
Community Rating
Description
In a city caught between old traditions and modern advancements, the dead are not buried—they are Transcribed. Their bodies dissolve into ink and parchment, their lives bound into books, whispering their stories from the vast Library of the Departed. Undertaker-Librarians retrieve and catalog these volumes, ensuring that every soul is recorded, every history preserved.
Alistair Crowe is one such Undertaker—a man who collects the dead without question, a keeper of stories he never dares to read. But when a routine Transcription yields an anomaly, something that should not be possible, he finds himself drawn into a mystery that challenges everything he knows about identity, memory, and the truth we leave behind.
Because in death, every story should be final.
Some are not.

- The CommentatorRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I mean... the title says it all. It's a nice little short story, contained and with a satisfying ending.
The prose is exactly what the story needs, with very few grammar mistakes and a POV that shows what's happening exactly in the way it needs to be done.
The story itself is simple but concise, and ends in a satisfying way.
The characters, while a tiny bit samey, are good for this little short and are introduced naturally.
The world-building is where I think it truly shines however. It's an interesting world introduced very naturally and at a perfect pace.
All in all, an 8/10 story, and thus my rating. 8/10 is recommendation worthy and deserves to be read. It's just not peak fiction. Not bad, and good, but not truly amazing.
