Description

UnderCurrent ζ-Blurb;For what would you fight for? Die for? Kill for? Before the NTME began its transmission a smaller, bitter conflict took place in the UnderCurrent, one in which the galaxy's legends yet lived and clashed. Remembrance rises to right the wrongs of history's worst war, can TSU combat their vicious guerrilla war? Can a young test pilot truly face the legendary Bane of Konpei? Find out in this standalone UC prequel as a perfect place to start your dive into the saga! The work takes inspirations and as such might be of interest to fans ofNausicaä,Gundam, Dune, 1984, Evangellion, Star Wars,Infinite Ryvius, Grimgar - plus anime, sci-fi and Irish Culture in general!

What to Expect;Daily chapters for the main book release, followed by bi-weekly extras (short stories, tie-ins and appendixes!).

UC is now a seven book strong sci-fi world with a detailed history and places. These main four books under this RR entry follow the main events of the universe's third age. The prequel giving insight into how things got as dire as they are in Volumes 1-3. A sequel of three more volumes (4-6) will one day be released right here, but as of right now Volume 3 is a pretty hard ending so you can consider this a complete saga to be binged with the bonus of more to someday follow!

Brief Update; As the UnderCurrent series continues to expand I've decided to order it chronologically, allowing for the newest written stuff to be first as a fun bonus. If you'd like to read it in release order instead, you can start with Volume 1-3 and then read the standalone prequel. The fifth book is a series of short stories, since Royal Road only allows a chapter to be in one volume at a time, these are placed chronologically with the other four books, rather then having a dedicated volume tabApologies for any confusion caused to those reading as the chapters shifted around and whichever order you choose, thanks for reading!

Volume 1 - Blurb; The two women couldn't seem much further apart - Teacher and student, specialist and novice, of noble birth and with no family at all - But when brought together with the rest of the Battleship Am-Fluchtig's fledgling crew, perhaps they will have more in common than first thought. The ships of the Tristian Flotilla are gathering, a dangerous submarine is already on the move, and it will all come to a head at the sight of a mechanical moon. The UnderCurrent has begun transmitting...

Now on Royal Road! This is my own original work, with obvious inspirations from the likes of Gundam, Dune, 1984, Evangellion, Grimgar and anime in general. All ideas and concepts shown are my own, though I do Parody some things.A fair amount of research has gone into many of the topics in this book, but I am by no means an expert in any.I'd love to share some of the research I've come across on mecha, living in Space, and amputees. Amputees in particular is a worthy topic we should all be more educated on - You may find this video link a brief intro into that world; https://youtu.be/piiFI8QafHs

There is a degree of deconstructionism towards the mecha genre involved with an onus on taking a more practical look at the features of that mode of storytelling, giving actually world building explanations for some of the fantastical equipment involved and using the likes of military structure and resource management in conjunction with the story, but hopefully this is something anyone can enjoy with no prior knowledge of the genre traditions.

Thanks for reading!

UnderCurrent is an easy read for anyone who likes Mecha (or maybe someone who wants to get into it). There is influence from Gundam, but it not required to pick up and understand. Those that have seen some Gundam will see where it pays homage, and if you watch more after reading (like I did) it will make rereading UnderCurrent all the more fun. Either way, if you have any interest in giant robots and interesting characters in space wars, it will certainly not disappoint.
And that is why I would recommend giving this story a read—whether you like Mecha or don’t have much experience with it—the story is fun.
The world is well thought out, with multiple levels to think on and plenty of room for many side stories, the characters are distinct, and lovable (even those who might be remiss to be described that way), and while there is plenty of inspiration from well known Mecha franchises, the author is good at weaving twists and applying new ideas to keep a reader on their toes. There might even be some tearjerking scenes.
It is certainly worth the read, and plenty to read at that! Multiple volumes of story including a prequel!

I’ve started reading the prequel of the Undercurrent series for this review swap. From what I’ve read and understand, the story takes place during an insurgency conflict against an imperialistic force (the TSU) occupying the planet of Abhaile.
Though I will admit that while reading this, some of the names and concepts from the text did throw me off a bit, as it is clear that reading the previous titles will provide a better understanding of the narrative and its world. This isn’t the fault of the story, but something to keep in mind if you chose to start with the prequel story if you chose to start from there.
If there is a criticism that I have with this however, it would be its stylistic choice. I believe it is its own thing, and it does have its own kind of flow that makes it pretty easy to read. Though there are times when dialogue is split a part, which makes following a character talking a bit difficult in some cases. Other than that, it is an easy read.
Though my reading of the story is really short. I find that the story has some pretty solid characters. I feel that the dialogue is organic (the briefing chapter is really good and made me enjoy the story a lot). Even if you are not a fan of mechs or action (which for one, how dare you) there is a lot of enjoyment through character interaction in this series.
Overall, I give this a pretty solid recommendation from what I’ve read.

So, my review is going to largely be centred around UC ζ, which is a  standalone prequel that takes place before the main storyline. And I will say that as a standalone story it leaves some questions since it sorta relies on prior knowledge and doesn't go into deep detail explaining things, but as someone who has read the other stuff that it works quite well and is pretty fun.
Its strongest element is probably the characters, some of which are really quite impressive for the short screentime they're given, with very neat thematic conclusions that I was genuinely impressed by. The worldbuilding is interesting, but given the short timeframe can feel a bit packed, while the prose is neat to read.
Overall, it's quite a nice read and I would definitely recommend it to anyone remotely interested in mecha and the like.

For those who want more character growth from their Gundam-style mecha story, this one is really worth the visit.
When you want to read an ensemble cast with a good flowing transition from one POV to another, which doesn't bog down the overarching storyline. And with some cool artwork aids to boot too.
Undercurrent reads to me as a Meca-Slice-of-Life where the story is narrated predominately through the perspectives of Kolme and his team. Connecting them together at the center as an anchor is Una, who is the team's rookie.  But there are side perspectives where we glimpse other viewpoints of the main characters from different angles, which is really cool.
The main story begins with Una having her ass handed to her during a battle simulation to test her skills: the one doing the deed is her senior Sabban.
Not going to lie, Sabban is my best boi, who is the only other male in the team. I like his complexity, which totters between deep-down caring big brother nature to being a hardened man due to a tragic situation that he had no control over.  Unfortunately, Una is meeting and experiencing the sadder side of Sabban.  I like how his character unfolds and grows during the course of this novel.
The other team member's perspective, which this story is also told from, is Hoki. She comes across as an Ice Princess at first glance. But, the more the story unfolds from her perspective, I glimpse a vulnerable person who wants to care but keeps herself restrained for some reason. Plus, she's the Yuri of the bunch: a big plus there.  Yet, although there are same-sex references, the subject is not delved further other than being part of characterization.
On to Kolme who reminds me of one of the old Doctor Who. I tend to get a 3rd Doctor vibe from him for some reason.  Really cool. For me, he's like the big daddy giant in the team. And like Sabban, has weathered many battle scars that have inadvertently hardened his outlook somewhat. Because of this, I feel Sabban and Kolme have a
