- invidiousRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A rabbit is slowly dismantled, with its missing pieces gradually replaced by chrome and wires: the titular Theseus Hare. Even here, in the gestational period of the story, this is a fitting name for a tale about a facility full of child-experiments and their reluctant caretakers. Yet the thing I love most about the title is what it promises for the future of the story.
Though it must be said that at around 30,000 words into the story, no chart exists for its future: only foreboding signs of grim waters and the fantastical shapes flitting underneath. But while sci-fi fused with fantasy is often unwieldy on this website, if there's one story where it seems to be appropriate it's one where science begins to dig into Lovecraftian shapes and angles. Something strange lurks on the horizon of the Theseus Rabbit. It can be heartening, it can be disturbing, it can be terrifying. It is fascinating.
But without a charismatic protagonist all of it might run flat after a time. Yet even without delving into just how well the story portrays children -- neither too smart nor too stupid, and possessing emotion and trauma in spades -- and the different researchers who struggle with their own sense of empathy against a reality that demands wilful ignorance, the protagonist is well-defined and interesting; a fantastic blend of humanity merged with an inhuman context.
Beyond the initial shock of reading in second-person (which readers quickly get used to) its style often seems to lurk behind the scenes, carrying the story forward unobtrusively until the moment it leaps forward with a slew of Biblical capitalisations or depictions horrifying enough to make your skin itch. It's good, but in a strange way that seems to thwart my attempts at definition.
Grammar is good by RR standards, with two minor, unobtrusive errors that I've noticed. The first is the tendency to capitalise the pronoun of the speaker in dialogue ("The beginning?" You echo instead of "The beginning?" you echo) which I be - nytoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Honestly, I think it's almost criminal that this story had no reviews by the time I read it. Sometimes I question why I trudge through the morasses of recently updated new stories, and this one really reminded me why I do that. I'm not a great writer nor reviewer, but I'll try to do this one justice, since this one is really special and has the potential to be one of the greats on RR.
Style
I mean, oof. Tread carefully, as this one is chock-full of trigger warnings, filled to the brim with terrible, traumatizing events. However, I am deeply impressed by the author's ability to paint these scenes through the lens of a hardened survivor, but still retain the tone of a child.
Writing is brisk yet descriptive, and always written with just the right amount of shock value, never dipping into the gratuitous.
Story
Dark and depressing, this story is so imaginative and captivating. I never felt stuck with a certain plot point, all the while there's tons of world building that's happening in the background. However, you can tell that this story is at it's infancy, but has a long road paved out ahead of it, with seeds planted left and right. Can't wait to see what happens next.
Grammar
Immaculate - maybe one or two typos? Honestly felt proofread and you can really tell the care that went into crafting each chapter
Character
Each character feels distinct - you can really feel the aura of each character and how they are seen through the eyes of the MC. The creativity and setting of the story lends to some really interesting interactions, and none of them feel forced or faked.
