Description

Something strange has happened to the continent of Loerma, perhaps even the entire world. Humans cannot die, and the gods have fallen silent. Demons have slipped their contracts, and the political powers of Loerma have been beset by instability. Old cults stir, new technology threatens to tip the balance of the great powers, and legal systems have been thrown into chaos. In response a divine aspect of the goddess Nanya, the aether Amber Nekt, seeks to assemble a group of heroes to aid the various peoples of the continent in their time of great need.

These heroes seek to make a paradise of the world, to fix what is broken and protect that which is not. The effort will take them centuries at least, and all the while the world itself teeters on the brink of destruction. They will, in all likelihood, fail utterly.

The Sundered Centuries is a story about humans struggling not just to survive but make the world a better place despite its slow grind towards oblivion and while beset by threats both human and inhuman, grand and petty. It focuses on the themes of divinity, progress, immortality, perseverance, compassion, understanding, and building utopia out of ruin.

    Disclaimer: I was a beta reader for the first handful of chapters for this story, so I understand a bit more of where the story is going, but have reread the story as it is presently available here on RR and intend to write this review based on its current iteration.
    The Sundered Centuries is a bit of slowburn fantasy set within an excellently crafted original world. Grammar is without significant issue, and characters are likeable, but much of that likeability is not immediately evident and instead garnered over the course of multiple chapters - a consequence of having multiple leads/perspectives. Though these perspective shifts are communicated via beautiful handmade scene separators, it can be a bit challenging to grasp from a first read and may at first feel inconsistent. Overcoming this requires a degree of investment or effort from readers.
    However, if one finds themselves able to parse the perspective shifts and navigate key dialog cues, relatable, appreciable characters emerge, and as the setting they find themselves in is itself engaging enough, a worthwhile story ensues.
    Grammar Score: 4.0 - Only minor nitpicks identifiable and nothing that actively hampers the reading experience.
    Character Score: 4.5 - Initial roadbumps detract from an immediate appreciation of the story's leads. With limited chapters (4) to work with at the time of this review, and these chapters themselves being split between a couple of perspectives, understanding and relating with those leads is not easily achievable. However, this fault is not on the characters themselves:
    Style Score: 3.5 - Rather than docking points from the Character Score, for the above, as the source of the difficulties in relating to the characters of The Sundered Centuries is a stylistic issue, I dock points here.
    Story Score: 5.0 - No complaints. Setting, background, and plot are adequately enrapturing.
    Overall Score: 4.0 + 4.5 + 3.5 + 5.0 = 17/4 = 4.25 -> 4.0
