- TeranshRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The characters are compelling, the grammar is fantastic, the system is unique, a new interesting take and the genre. The reason I didn't give 5 for story is because so far it is action packed. However don't let that discourage you from picking this book up, I do believe it is among the better options on this website. Enjoy!
- AuthorSeanHallRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0If you are looking for an easy-going and humorous take on the perennial assassin's classic, this is it. Nathan was already a legend—an efficient killer with thousands of kills under his belt and seven decades old, feared by all—except for one he can't kill: his ultimate rival, Cleo. After years of botching each other's attempts at killing, they finally pull it off and get stuck in a new world together.
Now cosmically bound, they have to navigate this new, freaky realm while dealing with their mutual hatred. Nathan has new abilities, thanks to a class he stole from the Ferryman, that allow him to summon back all the enemies he's killed—what a fun twist!
What really makes this story great is the dynamic between Nathan and Cleo. Their banter is too hilarious to just read and laugh; they really drive the story along and keep it all so fresh. The writing flows, and it's easy to follow with short chapters—great for a quick read on the go. Whether in a bus, at work, or just seated relaxing, this book is sure to drag you in without too much effort.
The action is very well written, and the stakes are high throughout, though with some comic lightening along the way. This "figure it out as I go" adventure with Nathan's new powers is an absolute hoot to follow, and the story just keeps getting better and better each time we meet a little more of the world and characters.
There are strong grammar skills, though a little more touching up could be worked in just here and there. The characters, especially Nathan and Cleo, appear well-rounded, with believable personalities and goals. Nathan himself is a summoner and also a practiced close assassin—a rare combo in a story of this type but utterly cool.
All in all, this is such a jolly book, a total joy. Perfectly set with humor, action, and character development, it's just the right choice for all fans of litRPG or assassin-themed stories. Definitely worth your while if you are in the mood for something fun and different! - Garbanzo BeanRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I wrote another review and then deleted it to write a more in depth one after having read more of the story. My score remains the same 5/5 overall!
The story is interesting and engaging from the beginning, but gets even much better after it establishes the characters, their new abilities, and the world that they have found themselves in. The fights have real stakes and are written phenomenally. The MC is badass.
Muah* Chef's kiss.
Style: 5/5 It's great, no complaints. The characters seem well rounded and believable and the interactions between the MC and FMC so far are great. They banter, but the banter isn't just nothing like some other stories, it advances the story and draws me in even more.
Story: I love the opening! Reading the synopsis, I expected something much different than how it started, but its started perfect. Two bitter old assassins that are a shadow of their former selves, but despise each other with a burning passion are forced to work together? Count me in. I also love the way the MC got his class. It feels very unique compared to some others in the sense that I don't think I've ever seen a "Ferryman" class before. I'm excited to see where it goes, ushering souls over the river maybe?
Grammar: 4.5/5. Very good grammar. Not perfect, but I have not spotted any mistakes, just the occasional line that could be slightly improved. Fantastic.
Character score: 5/5. As mentioned previously, the characters have realistic personalities and flaws, and seem well thought out. They have goals and personalities and aren't just wet blankets for the MC to look cool in front of.
i also really like how the MC is a summoner, but also an up close and personal assassin. I feel like most stories give you either or, but here you get both. Another gold star!
Overall, a shining star on RR that I think deserves more praise and attention. To anyone reading this review: I definitely suggest giving it a look. - MeercatWhisperer112Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a sweet, easygoing fix about two would-be enemies that just can't get away from each other. After finally succeeding in killing each other, these two MCs awake in a new world with their lives dependent on the other. Short chapters, an unbothered MC, and light, well written dialogue make this a good fix to bring with you on the bus, at the office, or anywhere you're looking to unwind.
- ArockalypseRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Rare enough to get both a fresh spin on the overdone necromancer power set and a lighthearted action adventure story together.
Dialogue and character's are well executed and the LitRPG mechanics aren't tedious. I'm not quite sold on Cleo yet but I'm sure there's more to come for her.
Very strong start Author Sourkraut, both to the story and to your fiction collection. I hope to see more and more of this going forward. - Raine3Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is an absolute blast to read! It caught my attention right from the start with that absolutely brilliant opening scene.
Style 5/5 - The style is easy to follow and makes it easy to stay engaged with the story. There was just the right amount of description to put me in the world without overdoing it, and I was able to picture the action scenes very clearly. The fighting is well written and easy to follow.
Grammar 5/5 - There were no grammatical errors I noticed.
Character 5/5 - Our hero is your typical, loveable, rakish guy who doubles as a highly talented assassin, and his chemistry with Cleo is everything I could ever want from a "forced to be friends with my nemesis" duo. I love Nathan's casual "I'll figure it out as I go" attitude about his new powers, and it's a lot of fun to discover things alongside him. I'm very excited to see Nathan's growth as the story progresses.
Story 5/5 - Exciting with the right amount of action, dialogue, and in-between moments. Plenty of humor intermixed keeps things light. There was never a boring moment, and everything feels very purposeful. The world is well developed, and the system stuff is done in a very tasteful manner to be appealing to more than just the hardcore stat fans. It's the kind of story you don't want to put down once you start!
Overall, 5/5 (obviously). A phenomenal story with incredible characters. I'm so excited to see where this all goes. Absolutely worth checking out. I promise you won't regret it. - zhuMumieRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0As of right now, the first ‘mini-arc’ has finished. And I'm loving this series. It has all the things that I enjoy, Competence, Confidence and (good) Comedy.
Two retired assassins finish their last, and longest running, job by killing each other. But death isn’t an end for them. Getting thrown into a world full of magic, beasts and classes they get another chance at life. Now, instead of following orders, they choose who to kill and on whose behalf.
Style - The Writing is easy to follow. It's hard to get stuck or lost in what is happening. What surprised me the most was Comedy. It is a chore to get a chuckle out of me while reading, but here, every few chapters, I drop one alongside a smile.
Some fight scenes could use a little bit more ‘oomf’, to really show ‘this a life or death situation’. But that is more than likely a me problem with how i like a fight scene.
Grammar - Is ok. Sometimes you can find a small error or a use of a wrong name. Nothing that a re-read or editor won't fix.
Story - Story is Great! The first few chapters really hook you in and after that they don’t let go. The dynamic between MC and FMC is fun and engaging, leaving you wanting more. The Story is still in its early days. I'm hoping the author will expand more on Cleo (FMC) and the world. I'm kinda disappointed we didn’t get a POV chapter for Cleo already. She is supposed to be the second main character, but we still don’t know anything about her, just snippets of her personality.
Character - everyone has a soul. That's all I need. They have goals, their own thoughts and secrets. Interaction between characters feels natural and you can see their personality, who they are, when they talk.I would appreciate a little bit more attention to side-characters, but that is a tiny problem.
Overall a story that deserves a top spot on Raising Stars and I hope to see it there soon. - Paradigm_ShiftRoyal Road★★ 2.0The writing style and grammar are good.
The story takes random directions which feel pretty forced and without context.
Like the mc has just now transmigrated to a new world, so why would he kill some unknown person to some unknown person.??Considering the mc was an assassin for such a long time and lived a full life, this feels a very forced decision . Assassin are supposed to be meticulous , patient, calculating. The mc is none of them. he is willfull , clueless, needs others to come save his ass, non calculative and really doesn’t feel like someone who lived for many years . If there was no context I would have just guessed that the mc was a teenage boy with a hero syndrome.
After that it was just a series of forced manoeuvring in the story and I dropped it.
The author needs to plan the story appropriately and make it flow from one scene to another naturally
there are some good points too
the powers were interesting. Would have actually liked to see how the powers revolved over the longterm
The short interactions with the other characters specially the banter between the hero and the heroine was good, and funny too.
