This short story covers the points for the contest and stands well on its own, but the inconsistencies in the speech itself is one of those things which grates at times. If you are going to do that, commit and don't dip and out of the accent - or forgo it and don't rely on the stereotype.
The set up here is good, but the facts of the story can easily be challenged like most tales. For starters, he'd be dead, even if it was a pocket of air. The suspension of disbelief based on the account once broken is hard to get back into, even if you ignore issues with the description which places the ship on high and the Neru leagues beneath. Murky or not, if this is taken as a proper account despite Neru's sanity being questioned this becomes an issue raised by the story itself. Aside from prose, factual errors, some other ones do exist, such as describing a ship on a 'transcontinental' route.
Still, even with these issues it was a fun read. A few edits and this would be a strong contender in any case - but I am reading this years after said contest.
