Description
A young man yearning for adventure must confront the harsh reality of a world that might not be the real one to begin with in this LitRPG fantasy adventure. For Prince Hail Teoran, there’s never been a greater hero than his own father, a true living legend who came through the gates with his fellow Travelers years ago to rescue the continent of Lagrea from the forces of darkness. Unfortunately, when the young prince actually meets his dad for the first time, he turns out to be, well, a total jerkweed.Naturally, Hail is crushed. That is, until he’s visited by a seemingly all-powerful administrator who explains that Hail, his mother, and everyone in their world are part of a game the Travelers are constantly playing. But that doesn’t mean Hail isn’t special. In fact, as a product of the union between his Traveler father and NPC mother, he’s an ever-evolving AI—ornativeplayer character—which means he has the ability make his own way, seeking adventure, facing danger, and occasionally screwing up in truly epic fashion.

- fremmyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So i've been searching around for another story to get into after finishing a couple others and have had little luck. Now though, while this is still new and therefore doesn't have a lot of chapters yet, it so far seems really promising. What has come out is really good, and i blew through all the chapters in one go. The MC is a child, but really well done and doesn't fall into the trap of being either too childish, or too mature for his age imo. The other characters are so far well written and the world building itself shows promise. Would recommend the read.
- lvl99onionRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0God do I ever love this novel, A MC who is basically a
Artificial soul construct made by a player impregnating an NPC.
really makes the story stand out. It has made me want to find more novels in which NPC is aware he's in a game. The only other 2 I could find so far are
the legendary mechanic and I am the Legendary boss. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to reference other novels in a review so they will stay in the spoiler - DetroxRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I must say, I am truly impressed with this one. The first chapter is written so well it got me hooked immediately, and then came the twist in chapter two, making a marvelous mix of unexpected, uncharted territory which somehow fit perfectly into the world the author is trying to portray.
Style: Fits the story theme, and even though I prefer third person perspective, I don't see any reason to count it as a fault. 5*
Story: Tried and true opening, with a very interesting world, which gets immediately twisted by a very unexpected revelation, creating a unique but very pleasant plot to explore and enjoy. 5*
Character: MC is well written, and behaves believably in the settings and with the cards he was dealt with. The other characters are slowly being fleshed out, but so far I more liked than disliked them. Time will tell how it all develops later, but right now 5*
Grammar: A typo here and there, but nothing that can't be fixed by a few presses of a button. Overall though, the grammar is great and I never felt any significant problems with it. 5*
Overall, this was the easiest 5* review I have written. If the quality keeps up in the following chapters I am fully expecting this one to hit the front pages of rising stars soon.
Keep up the great work! - GezornenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Great short read. I am interested to see when book 2 comes out.
Unique point of view from MC.
I also want to see the interactions between both worlds.
The author does appear to like griefing the captain of the guard.
This is a rare take on the stuck in a mmorpg genre.
The main story wraps up nicely and can be considered complete. Thank everything for not leaving the readers hanging. The epilogues open several options for the next book and I can't wait. - KuroKuramaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The first book was very good reading, the characters were various, some good some bad, in other words, realistic. The story was interesting, I couldn't wait for every new chapters, and wiating for them was the worst! But the most important thing is that, the grammatical site of the story is good, for me. The first book was very comfortable to read.
Can't wait for the second book! ♥ - MetahariRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I like how Hail makes unwise choices like all kids do, but learns from his mistakes. It's unclear if his father has the same potential.
Keep up the good work!
I get why Hail might not want speak up when he doesn't understand acronyms (or know what they are).
I get most of them, but not all. I love the divine RNG, for example but the more raid/damage specific terms are beyond my MMO exp, and I understand a little about item auctions, but not the term mentioned or how it's old school vs whatever might be currently popular.
Anyway, it's great for Hail to not know/understand for plot/world building but it would likely help some of your readers to have footnotes or a glossary so they can be in on the jokes. (And I'm still hoping a wild RNG trickster god actually appears.) - RyanTMRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Rewards are, experience, knowledge, and variable.
The Quest Giver has a slow burn progression that unfolds with each chapter. It's a masterfully crafted story that draws you in with its mix of intense action sequences, dynamic characters, and litRPG elements that scratches the itch.
I'm actually jealous at how well balanced each chapter is. After I finish this story I'll steal the authors secrets and make a masterpiece of my own. - Second LawRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love reading LitRPG, and this story was right up my alley. I was sucked in from the get go, and if you are someone who liked reading books like Awaken Online, Ascend Online, The Way of the Shaman, you would love this too. It is LitRPG in a game world with a twist. The MC is not one of the human players, he's an AI NPC.
Style Score - The story is narrated mostly from the POV of the MC, and is done quite well. As the MC grows up, the narration evolves to reflect that change in age too. The worldbuilding elements are well executed too, though RPG parlance is thrown around which might be as confusing to the reader as it was to our MC, but shouldn't be a problem for regular readers of the genre, or for people who play RPGs!
Story Score - This is where The Quest Giver shines according to me. The story starts with a very interesting setup - our MC is an AI in a game. Over time, we get to learn his background, his motivations, and how he progresses. There is a good cast of side characters and background information about the game lore that keeps the story engaging.
Grammar Score - I can't say confidently say that the grammer was perfect, as I was really enjoying the story too much to pay attention! But I would say I failed to notice any issues in my readthrough.
Character Score - The character of the MC is instantly likeable from the start of the story, and I found his childish innocence quite endearing. He's still fairly young 5 chapters into the story, so I wouldn't say there is much depth to him, but there is enough curiousity and wander in his nature to make me want to follow along with him on the journey. Over time I hope to see him develop further. The side characters are diverse and fairly well written too, though none of them have got enough time to themselves for me to say much about them. - SilverdawnRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Absolutely love this story, as such I wanted to give it the best review I could! I'm 26 chapters in right now, but I'll be catching the rest of the way up shortly!
Overall: The main thing I wanna note is that this is a novel idea. I honestly had no clue which direction this story was going to go when I first started reading, and was expecting something much more shallow. I was pleasantly surprised, and found the twist interesting, the game system easy to visualise and navigate, and the pacing of the story appropriate! Overall this is a very strong story, read if you enjoy unconventional VRMMO stories!
In regards to style, this story has plenty, and the narrator's voice is often fairly invisible and complementary to the story, but I do have a couple of slight gripes with overused descriptors and dialogue attributions. Nothing particularly serious besides that and sometimes the balance between dialogue and introspection sometimes feeling a bit overly skewed in one direction or another, but I'm totally willing to accept that might just be a me thing!
Grammar is fine, there's the occasional typo but that's to be expected in a first draft and the author clearly knows how to write/prose effectively. Five stars!
Story score is a definite five. The world is interesting and we don't have direct exposition shoving things down our throats basically ever! We just experience things through Hales' eyes and learn as he does, and Hail's a great character. Watching his journey and learning more about the world he inhabits and the unique situation he's made to deal with is more than interesting, and incredibly entertaining to me! Five stars!
Lastly, characters. Characters are great. Hail is GREAT. Even minor characters feel great. Some are caricatured, but it works! Others feel as if they have nuance/depth beyond just being 'guild member #34' and as if they've been thought out well. They all have entertaining dialogue.
In conculsion, just read this story. If you like ANY story on thi - CrelerSquidRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0"But squid, the stars don't add up or average out!"
Shush heathen!! Begone!
I encountered no shortage of extremely minor typos and grammatical issues while reading this book. That usually takes me out of a story and is rather hard to contend with, especially if they're frequent. With this story, however, it was different.
The frequent use of phonetics to spell out mechanics or slang is a little difficult to contend with, especially if you're not a legacy gamer. As I understand it this is a stylistic choice and I'm not going to yuck the author's yum, but it is something that I believe is worth pointing out.
This story is compelling, using the LitRPG genre as a mechanic through which the story is told rather than a grindy slog through stat ups and increasingly difficult olds.
Personally, I just skipped through most of the stat screens, only taking into account relative levels and strengths and discarding everything in regards to actual statistics or skills/abilities. I don't feel this hampered the story, so if you aren't into GameLit crunch, this is the stepping stone for you!
The story itself is rather novel, if not completely unique in the space. HOWEVER! The characterization of both the MC and support characters was quite novel, and I binged the entire book in a workday.
I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys characters over stats!
