Recently, I stumbled across "The Primeval Apocalypse" by (of all things) rolling the dice with an "Others Have Also Liked" recommendation. Given the (apparently pseudo-random nature of the) source, I honestly wasn't expecting much, but for once, the dice came up sevens.
Based on what they've posted to date, the authors are well on their way to producing a true gem, and not of the "diamond in the rough" variety. The prologue, while hilarious, might scare some readers off, but don't let it - the meat of the story, from Chapter 1 to (currently) Chapter 55, is post-apocalyptic LitRPG at its best. Indeed, after binging the currently available content, I was stunned to see that the story has yet to garner a review, so please bear with me while I attempt (probably poorly, but someone's gotta do it) to recitify this gross injustice.
In a welcome departure from boilerplate post-apocalyptic LitRPG standard, the authors have elected to forego dedicating the first 20+ chapters to the "arrival of the system," and by doing so have avoided thetrap of "world-building-via-info-dump." Would that more authors would do the same. By choosing to begin the story several months into the apocolypse, the action begins immediately, allowing their (admittedly top-notch) world-building to be introduced subtly and gradually.
The pace of the story is close to optimal, featuring with well-written action sequences interspersed with a heafty dose of the authors' witty humor. Said humor is delivered, initially, via the protagonist's internal monologue, and, later, through his interactions with his animal companion. It is these two characters that the story revolves around, and they receive the lion's share of the story's character development (you won't find a large cast of well-developed side characters, or the frequent, annoying POV changes such a cast necessitates) . That being said, both are relatable and believable, and their development, like the world-building, is subtle, arising organically f

Overall, I quite enjoyed this fiction. The characters work well, even if they might not be the freshest fish on the block. The system works well. The skills flow nicely. The combat is fresh, fun, and very satisfying, and there seem to be some good underpinnings. Overall this is definitely a read I would recommend. Especially with the pace the author is putting out chapters.
Unfortunately, this has one or two problems that I do want to mention. Number one, it has a lot of bloat. Unfortunately, the pacing in this novel is incredibly stretched out, and this has lead to a feeling of some bloat. There were several times I found myself simply skipping through large chunks of chapters while missing absolutely nothing of importance. Secondly, there is just a little something that seems to be missing from the way the world is constructed. There is no real overarching plot. No interesting thing going on. We watch as someone survives, and thats about it. Sure there are hints at something culminating in the future, but those hints are far and few between, hidden between much of the bloat that has filled up this fiction.
So, if you're looking for a large fiction with tons of words, I'd recommend it. But if your looking for something sweet, short, succulent, and to the point.... well this aint it cheif.

I have been emotionally invested since the first chapter when the actions of the alien translator made me think "That bitch!" This is good stuff, just the right flavor of action and comedy, keep it up! I have read many stories on royal road and this is the first time I have felt compelled to give a review.
