- ZivenoxRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Great story so far, interested to learn more about the beginning and if the entire army had turned into the ghouls. Looking forward to learn more about the trio as they try to make a quick buck. Maybe some flashbacks in between the happenings of the trio? Learning a bit more about how the city came to be or any sort of back story into the more powerful characters.
- RathowmRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is an excellent fantasy novel in all regards and aspects. It is a true love letter to Dungeons and dragons classic fantasy stories. The world building is excellent and detailed. Unique and inspired at the same time.
Style is of the fashion of a Lord of the rings mini adventure. It achieves what it sets out to do and meshes with the theme wonderfully. Some info dumps from time to time, but I personally dont mind them. They bring in much interesting detail and potential plot lines.
Grammar is pretty much perfect and so is the Author's use of syntax. I haven't personally noticed anything that could be fixed. The language and story flows excellentely. Im honestly jelaous of their ability to write. This is truely well-written and competentcy is bursting at the seems in this aspect of the novel.
Characters are the best part of the novel. All three are absolutely great in their own ways, But Skrach is in a league of his own. Hillarious little rouge rodent that is hard not to relate to on some level. Extremely likeable character. Action scenes are fantastic. A novel I hope to see have a paperback adaption one day. Great work and keep it up. - S.N. KeirsteadRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A classic DnD-styled adventure through and through. Pure fantasy fans will enjoy everything about this story; the lore is heavy. The characters fit the setting. Dialogue is fun while staying true to the theme. Plenty of descriptions and details to keep you turning pages.
Chapters are a bit chunky and do take a bit of work to get through, but it's worth going through the dense pages if the setting and theming are up your alley. - BullerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The plot is fun and intersting. Premise is pretty new, though I must say that the the name of the fiction is becoming more fitting with time. Maybe it's due to me realising why it fits but whatever. Great stuff overall, even if there were a few points where I had to wonder about sentence-structure. 5/5
- Slifer274Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Excellent start so far. Reads like a combination of a DnD campaign and A Practical Guide to Evil in the best way. Recommend for any fans of cool worlds and fantasy.
Style: 4.5/5 Slight issue with info-dumping at points, especially in the very beginning. However, for the most part, the prose is good. It reads smoothly and elegantly without going too over the top. Also, I think some blocks of text, especially dialogue blocks, should be broken up just a little bit more.
Could also use a little more showing than telling in places, and some scenes could use expanding on (eg the descent of the Ordained Angel, Rath’Mel’s fear afterward).
Story: 5/5 Interesting story so far! It’s got a cool world with Dungeons and Dragon-inspired magic, and it also seems to be taking some slight inspiration from Guide with the Names we see in the prologue. The city feels dark and destructive, and the atmosphere that’s been created feels genuine and gritty.
Grammar: 5/5 No major issues. Some slight issues with comma placement.
Character: 4.5/5 Apart from some slight inconsistencies in the prologue, the characters are solidly characterized. Prologue characters are seen to be cold and uncaring of their subordinates, Skrakch has a hell of a personality that I’d like to see more of, and the new side characters are all interesting in their own ways, with good interactions that don’t feel too stilted. - Edge ValmondRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style:
I do not grade style, but if I have to give something. It is in third person PoV, and it is easy to follow along. The way the style comes off, really brings things along well.
Grammar:
Checks out fine.
Story/Character:
A place basically looking in ruin, monsters roaming around. Those fighting against them, even having to flee their home. Really setting in a grim feeling, a sense of hopelessness really. Which is what hammers in the effort against a plague. That they can continuously fight, yet it only does so much. The story really ironing this out in the details, with its wide enough world building. Definitely along the lines of it being more unique to say. The main character being someone who has endured quite a range of things, and seeming to have connections. As the job he works, and is able to pay off for things at a later time. Though, given the condition of the place itself, this says a bit. A steady progress tale, that takes some time to get into, but is quite rewarding.
Overall, I’d say this story has a few points of notice. The kind of tone it sets, which is grim to say. The world building of it, and the progression of it. While much cannot be said about the characters. I truly believe it does well all around, and would recommend giving it a try yourself to see. It is definitely something on the new side of things, and can be a much enjoyable read. - Evelyn AdelbergRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is good ol' fantasy like they don't make them no more.
I could go on and on about how masterfully the author uses tension and paces action scenes, but instead, I want to focus on what's often taken for granted in fantasy books: worldbuilding.
Starting from the opening paragraphs, the author weaves the lore of this world into the prose. By playing on familiar concepts that don't nessesraly need explaining (magic, knights, undead,..), and sprinkling around some lore, it is up to the reader to fill in the gaps.
The characters in this story are also well-written and distinct. In their introductory chapters, their personality and goals are very quickly established, making it easy to get attached to them.
TLDR: If you're a fan of dark fantasy with high stakes, graphic battle scenes, and a memorable cast of characters, this story is for you! - Alt41Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story is good till where I reached, I personally found the prologue a bit long, especially with knowing that we won't be following the characters in it, but gotta be honest it was one of the most well-written chapters on this website, and it had quite an ending too, I totally didn't expect it. And it's of importance to the story so it was worth it.
Anyway to the review~~
Style: as I said it's well written and easy to follow, even though it might take you a little bit of time to get used to it, but when it gets going it's pretty entertaining.
Story: still at the beginning right now, but we are following three main characters till this point; A rattling with delusion of grandeur and a pinch, actually more than a pinch, of discrimination towards humans, a halfling that's the brain of the operation who seem to worship money more than anything else, even his two fellows, and finally a human who's a fighter and the muscles among them three. At the moment they are on the job of a lifetime that's facing some hiccups~
Grammar: perfect, I saw no mistakes at all so that's that from me~
Characters: all the three main characters are distinct with their own different personalities. As I said above each of them has a character trait that sets them aside from the others. And not just the main characters too, even the characters we saw for 2 chapters only in the prologue felt alive, so I have no complaints here~
That's all from me~ what I would say is don't give up on the novel because of the prologue, it's worth your time and if you like multiple leads stories you will love this.
And finally a big thank you to the author for their hard work, here to much more~~ - Akten DreamsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall, I will say that this is an excellent magical fantasy story. It has excellent plot progression and interesting characters.
Style Score - There is nothing new to the way the story is written, but it is written on solid ground. The worldbuilding is nicely woven into the story in the character's written perception. With every chapter, there is more added.
Grammar - It's perfect. Out of the many chapters that I read, I have only seen one mistake, and it was very very tiny. The descriptions of things are solid so it's easy to see that the writer has a very good grasp on writing stuff.
Story - Now the most important is the story plot progression. The early prologue has set the setting of where the story is taking place and at the same time, it has set a foundation upon which the story is built. After that, the story mainly centers around the desires of our ratkin and his quest for Power. With a few sprinkles of pov for the side characters to flesh them out and make the story progress, here and there, I am eager to know how it all progresses. The only reason why I have not given it 5 stars is that for some reason I got distracted by the descriptions woven into the story. No idea why it happened. All of it flowed nicely and I do like it but I had to reread a few paragraphs. Maybe it's cuz my mind was too busy thinking of my own story to write. Who knows?
Character - The characters themselves are fleshed out and as the story progresses we learn about them and their motivations or their innate characters. The reason I give the character score of 4.5 stars is that the characters are fully established so far, and therefore their actions are a tiny bit predictable, which is the word that explains it best. But it is still early in the story, story-wise. I am sure this story won't be a short one.
Like I said the story is good and I hope it continues to be good in the future as I am sure it will gain good traction with followers and readers once it hits trending.
I know cuz - NexileRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0When was the last time you picked up one of the classics? No, not those classics. One of those older fantasy books staring at you from your bookshelf – yes, that one. Well, it won’t mind you picking up this story at all. Maybe it’ll even encourage you. Yea, I think it will. And I will, too. You’re gonna love this.
STYLE: The prose in this story is reminiscent of the writing of older fantasy novels, very fitting for the theme and also wonderfully reflecting the characters’ view of the city of Dray’Mel. No complaints about the pacing either. Perhaps the only hiccup would be with the prologue, as it flowed a bit slowly before the action picked up, but this reader didn’t mind that too much.
STORY: Worldbuilding is done well for the patch of the world the characters are allowed to be in, which is the living district in Dray’Mel, whereas the rest of the world is introduced in snippets. That was perfectly fine because that was done with great detail. One thing I also liked was how the prologue had a really interesting twist at the end (who said light and dark can’t mix? Probably the guy who saw what happened here…) The story itself follows a Ratling, Skrakch, and his quest for power – being one of the Chosen. As things go, however, fate foils him just as he’s about to succeed in all sorts of hilarious ways.
GRAMMAR: There are some issues here and there, with commas and some tense errors, but those mostly disappear by the latter chapters.
CHARACTER: Ah, the characters… The characters. Definitely what I liked the most in this story. We’ve been introduced to three so far, all members of a motley crew: Skrakch, Zach, and Winifred. All three are quite distinct and their inner monologue and dialogue are bursting with personality. One of them even has a thick accent. Loved it!
OVERALL: Why, by the Gods Below, are you still reading this review and not the story? You’re gonna love the characters. You’re gonna cheer for our Ratling to succeed – or maybe fail; that’s fair, too – and
