The story follows Matt, a young man planning to delve the rifts responsible for the monsters that destroyed his city and killed his parents. His dreams are crushed when his Tier 1 Talent is rated as detrimental, and no guild or group will take him.
Working at a nearby inn, he meets a mysterious and powerful couple. They give him a chance to join The Path of Ascension, an empire wide race to ascend the Tiers and become living legends.
With their recommendation and a stolen skill, Matt begins his journey to the peak of power.

Chapters will now be MONDAY and FRIDAY AT 3:00pm EST.
This is a mix between LitRPG and Xianxia. It's like a car that looks like a LitRPG with dungeons and skills, but the interior and engine are all Xianxia.
So no blue boxes and clicking +’s to get stronger.
***
What you won't see in this novel:
Bland protagonists.
Bland love interests that immediately fall in love with the MC.
Murder hobos who kill entire families and clans for looking the wrong way at somebody.
Pacifist MC’s who wouldn't kill a single person to save millions.
Cartoonish villains who are bad just to be bad.
***
What to expect:
A MC who acts rationally.
World building that has more depth than ‘strong people 'stronk'. There will be no rules only benefiting the strong and no rule changes as they see fit.
An empire that actually cares for its citizens.
People who act and talk like real people.
A magic system and progression system that are logically and internally consistent.
Realistic fight scenes.

- LytheRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is one of my top 5 favourites that I check up on every time it updates, and sometimes go back and reread the first few books for enjoyment. The character starts small and weak and gets strong, and throughout the whole journey you see evidence of preplanned world building. He gets strong but not invulnerable, and at every level stays challenged. Obstacles aren't just combat but also society and economics. Combat evolves too, not just bigger goblins
- The Need To EscapeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It's nice to see a progression fantasy with characters who take the time to smell the roses along the way, and question why they're pursuing power in the first place. The Path of Ascension is a marathon not a sprint, and the main character knows it. Month long vacations are had, fun activities are splurged on, and social bonds are kept and grown. My only complaint at the moment, and it's a small one, is that it feels like the MC is losing their underdog status as the story progresses and more and more high powered individuals become aware of and expect big things from him. It will be interesting to see how the author maintains narrative tension as the MC gains more and more fallback options. Maybe he will drop off the Path after all and surprise me.
- DouglasMackRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Thank got for the Litrpg group on FB. This came across as a recommendation. Great job guys keep it up! The characters are well built. Relationships seem natural and well meaning so far. Does lack hardship. Ya he lost his parents and got saddled with some bad skills. That is life. Give him something to overcome that makes him a hero. Just my two cents and worth less than that. Can’t wait for more to read.
- SkyZHammerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Great pacing, fun characters, and an imaginative universe. All that being said, I think the latest chapters coming out with them ruling worlds and being bigshots is starting to loose the earlier books charm. Not sure how to go about giving it back that it factor but would recommend looking at that.
- bingereadRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Captivating sci-fi saga! Enjoyed reading up to chapter 330 and waiting for more.
Xianxia is not my cup of tea normally but the novel is light on those influences. The character and world building is done fairly well, with a staggering amount of mechanics, for better and worse.
Thanks for publishing openly available! - Fade StriderRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Damn nice 'o'
I think this is at most 2nd to 3rd time I'm seeing this quality of worldbuilding and story telling in the same place. It would be hard to recommend reading instead of forcing them, just to tell them "i told you so" when they wipe a tear after they gobble up all the chapters wanting more..
Keep up the amazing! - Zombie UnicorneRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The premise is really simple, which ironically is what makes this leagues better than the usual cultivation/Xiaxiab/wuxia.
You don't have some kid, bullied thirsting for revenge as his source of motivation to get stronger or a paragon wanting to overthrow a system enacted by the strong to keep the weak in thier heels or the usual cliche.
The only cliche is the MC being weak and the usual lucky boon he gets in his path to get stronger.
The MC, Matt's motivation to get stronger is quite simple, it's a combination of his cercumstance and the culture of the empire. From the media to international forces of a cold war aqainst equal powers, propogandas, artificial disasters to everday advertisings, it all encourages strenght and Matt is very susceptible to these forces. He wants to get stronger because thats what all he was taught and what his world only knows, to try to get ahead in a arms race. Simple and realistic and far better that the overused cliches of the Xinxia genre of vendettas and a bullied character trying to make thier MC have better motivation than thier contemporaries but utterly failing.
My only concern is the repetitiveness of the constant training and battling and the occasional life and death scenarios. Its not too bad for now but I see it becoming tedious in 30+ chapters or so. I recomend some more slice of life elements, character interactions, Matt socializing more and stuff, it's said that he isn't bland but I can't help it when he doesn't lead conversation and is alway get strung along for most of his interaction with side characters.
Hope that gets some attention but all in all I applaud the author for a great attempt in trying to create a great story. - GentrifiedpantsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love this book! Several things I love in particular. I'm getting back to reading hard copies of books since once been reading online for quite a while and I'm really enjoying reading physical books again. This book is super easy to pick up, and not so easy to put down, but definitely easier than other books since it's written in a style of each chapter generally being it's own section while still connecting well to the ones before and after. It's hot a great story with great characters and a character development I really like. It presents believable issues in the world setting it's in and if generally a really fun story. I like the setting and of course love cool armor and swords, mages, and fantastical beasts, but I really like the idea of talents and how they're dealt with. There is the obvious idea of how do these characters have the luck that they do but to be honest it's clearly shown that other characters have crazy luck as well and they're not the strongest in their league by far. I think the power scaling is done very well, though I'm not as big of a fan of the hard line of fighting up tiers being impossible, I like that it creates a world where anyone can do that is recognizably better than most people their age/tier.
Don't want to bore y'all but I really like this, great job mantis!
I have currently read hard copy books 1 and 2. Just finished the war section. - Joseph MitchellRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Very fun story. Is a cultivation novel but uses a framework that gives it a more systemy feel. The storyline is excellent and the world building is a very interesting take on MAD in a cultivation world. I very much love the path system itself and the whole background that goes into it and it's results. I would recommend this series to anyone who reads litrpg, cultivation novels, or are just into great adventure novels.
- nodavis2000Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is one of my favorite series. I like how Path of Ascension starts off and when Matt is ready to "leave" his planet, C. Mantis continues to expand on the universe of Path of Ascension. The series is excellently paced. The roles of the MCs continuously evolve and do not become stagnant with 'only delving' into rifts. Character development is great, not too rushed, as well as developing the other Great Powers. There are recalls of past side characters that, although they become obsolete as the MCs progress in their lives. I like how C Mantis occasionally changes the points of view to include the 'current set' of enemies of the Empire / Matt and Liz. This is a MUST READ for people who enjoy a nice, long series that doesn't get old.
