- gencon11Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0A fantastic and well written fanfic with clear a lot of thought into balance and meta data to support an invigorating story. If I have a criticism it is only to increase rate of chapter releases as I’m hooked, which is purely selfish on my part given the time that has already been given to this story.
- DefectivebyDesignRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The characters and story are pretty good, although it does suffer from info dumping in early chapters. What stops this from being top tier though is how much ridiculous evolutional plot armor the enemies have, and the absolute uselessness of the Jedi, which stoops to outright self sabotage and anti Jedi behavior. They're overly pacifist and EMOTIONAL about not contributing to their own self defense, when it's clear the enemies are more insane and evil than the empire or trade union. The empire just wanted to rule, while these vong want slavery, torture, and extermination, and the entire galaxy leaves all the fighting to the Ultramarines, who have limited resources, and the vong pull out ever increasing plot armor upgrades. Does the author think about how ridiculous and unbalanced this is? The only thing saving the novel is that there's HINTS that some of the imperials can use the force, some bare minimum cooperation, and the battles haven't been a complete loss. You can't write a good story at this abysmal pacing of loss vs actual progress, because EVERYONE will be dead before there's a force capable of fighting back. You don't need to make the vong OP, Jedi useless, and constantly lose battles to make a good story. Stories are good because there's a good plot and characters, and the current direction is just killing them all off, known characters to random vong plot armor, which is lazy. Warhammer has evolutional enemies already, and the Imperials can hold their own, it makes no sense that Star Wars vong are more powerful, and there's no counter or help from the galaxy or Jedi. This honestly needs to be addressed so the story doesn't turn unreadable. Even Star Trek upgraded their capabilities against the Borg, because the show would be dead otherwise, and these vong act like worse Borg. The Jedi are what here? Vong sympathizers? A wet napkin? Maybe give the astartes force lightning? IDK, do something, stop killing everyone off and doing nothing unless this is a von
- bdf2Royal Road★★★★ 4.0Warhammer meets Star Wars, and the highlight of the story is definitely when characters from either universe interact with each other. It is in these meetings where the detail is amazing of the scene and the character's inner monologue during. The characters are well fleshed out, complex, and act according to their beliefs and values rather than to make the story move in a certain direction leaving them feeling quite real.
Then there are long sections describing ship and battle formations, or architecture that are sometimes relevant (like how culture can be extrapolated from decoration) but often leaves huge chunks of text that can be skipped without impact to the story whatsoever.
The good points outweigh the bad by a large margin. I highly recommend this story, but with the caveat that you may have to skip over some sections to stay engaged.
