Darren, an irresponsible underachieving slacker in college, is unhappy with life leading to a monotonous rat race, when he is suddenly pulled into another world altogether. He gets thrust into the role of a Guardian, magically linked to, and sworn to protect a young mage. Silvia, who hadn't quickened and obtained her guardian or her powers when she was supposed to. She is a noble in Gardelia, a kingdom that is under duress, rife with internal strife, and ever on the verge of war. Darren must learn to live and find meaning in his new role, leaving his family behind, in this unrecognizable world, while Silvia works to harness her newfound powers to serve the kingdom, her family, and understand who she truly is.
