- Deathlier OreoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0...but incomplete. That's my biggest complaint with this story -- it seems like the author intends to eventually finish, but unfortunately at this moment it concludes without wrapping up the story.
As a whole, this story is great -- the premise is interesting, and the main character is where the story truly shines: an imperial maid who takes her duty extremely seriously.
I did have some false impressions going into this -- the premise made me think it would be comedic (the idea of an adventurer in a french maid outfit), but while there are humorous moments, overall it's a story that takes itself seriously, with an MC that takes herself very seriously. And though it's marked as a progression fantasy, there really hasn't been much (if any) progression. Despite having an over-arching goal, it feels to me more like a fish-out-of-water slice-of-life, following the day-to-day journey of an extremely dutiful maid attempting to return to the princess and imperial court she serves.
It's got a good mix of action and intrigue, but mostly the focus is on Lunaria and her interactions with the people of the small town she's stuck in, with the stakes slowly escalating as she attempts to get home. The MC, other characters, and the world-at-large seem well thought out with reasonable and realistic backstories. It takes place in a fairly standard medieval-aged fantasy world, with a few fun twists on the classic tropes (like the way adventurers are perceived). The best part is by far the MC -- everything is told from her perspective, and we pretty quickly learn she's not exactly 'normal', with a warped POV compared to pretty much everyone else (including most readers)...but she's still easy to relate to and root for.
No issues with grammar that I could tell. The style is somewhat formal and elaborate, which makes sense as it's coming from Lunaria's POV and fits with her personality.
Overall, 5 stars, though I would probably recommend that the author rework the blurb to more accurately - JeffersonSighsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This review has been a long time coming, and I really should have done it way back. Firstly, to begin with, this story is personally one of the few that I look forward towards enjoying each time a chapter comes out. It not only has a cool world that is being gradually built out, but has genuinely interesting characters and dialogue that make me only more invested within the story. The relationships between characters are such a key part of the story, and while one may want to see more of the same, I just really like how the author keeps it at a minimum, tempting you with the promise of more, but not overindulging the progression of a relationship, building it over the period of multiple chapters wherein the progress CAN be felt and realized. Beyond that, the strength progression is a bit interesting. While we've seen a bit of it, the progress can be seen to be slow in that aspect. But that's fine. Strength and power doesn't always have to be the center of the story, and while it is fundamentally critical to the protagonist's goals, it is not the only thing that matters at the end of it all. Lastly, it's so refreshing seeing a character who isn't a moral extreme. While she can certainly be regarded as extreme in some aspects, it isn't extreme in the moral sense of being extremely good/righteous, or bad/evil. She is bound by her responsibilities, and respects the same. While we may see this change in the future, it is always great to see such a grounded character, who has roots that they intend to return to. Grammar is impeccable to me, and the style is just consistently maintained and well done. The characters feel unique, realistic, true to their backstory, and just a delight to read their interactions with the protagonist. Peak gameplay indeed.
- MogarlRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I enjoyed this story, The human interactions feel real enough, and the world is nicely defined. The pacing for the story is fast enough for things to not seem mundane to the reader, but takes its time with novel experiences. It's unfortunate that the story didn't catch on to the writer's satisfaction, however I will unhappily agree that it's current end point is acceptable for an open ending. Though I think that is more true in it being an acceptable ending for a book, not a story.
This review was a little less relevant since Book 2 was added, so I wanted to change it a bit as well a bump my score up. I originally posted this review at chapter 34. My complaints are largely resolved in book 2, and I look forward to the next installment. - N4catRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is an engaging and well written story that shows depth in characterisation, world building and plot. The characters are well rounded and likeable with out being perfect. I'm really enjoying the subtle humour generated by the way our MC interacts with the world around her and her world view. Well worth reading.
- eric_shadowRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style.
The story is presented as internal monolouge by the main character with external interjections by other characters and the world overall i felt it flowed quite well
Story
The world building of the story is quite intresting and certainly peeked my intrest. The opening and ongoing setpiece a massive darksouls esc dwarven mountainhome in which the dwarves dug to deep and greedily is fascinating and something i would love to explore myself in a videogame.
Grammar
Grammar is on point with no noticed spelling mistakes and character dialogue narratively flows well and each characters choice of words feels natural to them.
Character
Our mc is an imperial maid trained to the highest levels and a little lost in her own world at times. Meeting twist and obstacles with the natural stocism that a british butler would be proud of.
Along the way shes meets several intresting characters who feel fleshed out with some thought put behind them
Overall the author has written an intriguing story with immersive world building and intresting and engaging characters that i would love to keep reading.
Unfortunetly due to a lack of readers and attention the author has at the time of this review put a stopping point to the story and is moving on ( a mistake in my opinion, cant get more readers if your stopping)
Im hopefully more people and other authors drive some traffic this way so the author picks this back up and we get to see more. - OJakeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Really glad to see this fic picked back up, not many reviews, and mine is long overdue. I can only guess that there was some discouragement that this fic wouldn't perform well due to not strictly following the meta, but there is an audience.
Ironically, I found this fic around the time The Most Violent White Mage blew up (dropped after 8 chapters), and since then, I've been itching for more. The White Mage comparison to The Maid Is Not Dead may be a bit forced, but one similarity I do see is just how good both are at developing characters. This fic does a fantastic job at not only developing Lunaria's thoughts and motivations, but ensuring side characters are not one-dimensional and, more importantly, developing real, lasting relationships despite our maid delving as a solo dungeoneer. The character score is by far the biggest strength of this fic, and the story and style scores follow suit, in that I can find almost nothing to nitpick thus far.
The worldbuilding overall is quite interesting, no litrpg system but, it's really not needed in this case. The magic is very well done, not overly powerful and smartly utilized by Lunaria. I won't say this is the best fic I've read, but it's up there and definitely earns its 5 stars. - ShallweRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A maid who knows her role well gets caught in a bind, getting back to her place relying solely on her strength and mind.
Colorful world gradually revealed, style and story are great, one of the best I've seen on this site and in general. Definitely worth giving a try! - Necromancer_Royal Road★★★★ 4.0Great story, but it ended way too abruptly. It seems like the best part was yet to come.
Honestly, it should probably have been marked "Dropped" or "Hiatus" instead of "Completed".
Great MC and side characters.
Aside from the way too early ending, I would rate it a good 5/5
