***Please Note***All books in this trilogy follow two timelines that, while interwoven, occur at distinctly different times in history. There are dates provided at the beginning of each chapter in all three books to help avoid confusion. The sexual content and traumatizing content warnings on these fictions are minimal but there are a few chapters that I felt necessary to mention out of consideration for the readers.

What drew me into this fiction was the subtle approach to world building. I can’t think of a single time I’d say the author info dumped a massive amount of useless information yet I do understand what is going on in the world and how if impacts the lives of the characters. At least to a degree. As I said, you aren’t given huge amounts of info that beat you over the head with facts or historical events.
Take into consideration the immensely intriguing use of two timelines that give you both the events leading this world into decay and the current events that are taking place to change that and you you have a story that is hard to put down.
While there are a few characters that might be a ray of sunshine, most are like the storm clouds that hang over this world - dark and gray. That’s not to say you can’t cheer for them or relate to them at all, but typically you will see the worst their personalities have to offer. Take Urman Gant a broken man whose life has been filled with crime and violence yet you can’t help but find him charming practically every time he opens his mouth.
I have enjoyed the well-woven story greatly so far and can’t wait to see how the POV characters intertwine down the road.

Full Disclosure - I read this story as a beta read (original manuscript) and have completed the story (book 1) so take that for what it's worth.
Given that this is the author's first full-length novel it is an impressive display of story-telling and character development. As another reviewer said, there are a lot of characters to keep track of and some might get lost in the shuffle a bit, but overall most of the main characters are well-written and are different enough to help you remember who is who in most cases.
Where this story shines for me though is how the different POV characters and their plots slowly unravel in ways that make the two timeline structure pay solid dividends. If something happens in this story, it most often happens for a reason and that reason will show up at times when you least expect. This adds a nice sense of surprise throughout without utilizing over-the-top plot twists. Is it a perfect, novel? No, but it is a good first effort and I am excited to see where this author takes the story.

I'm already binging this fiction in just one day but I absolutely had to stop halfway in just to leave this review. The grammar is impeccable, the characters are interesting, the only minor criticism I have is that so many characters are introduced within a couple of chapters of each other that it's difficult to keep their well-written differing personalities together with their names along with everything else to remember. Reminds me heavily of Spyre in terms of the writing. An absolute must read from someone I'm shocked has only one book as far as I know. The story is incredible and gripping and in the interest of avoiding spoilers I'll leave it at that. Additionally it is mentioned at the start that there is two timelines being followed so keep that in mind while you read so you don't get confused.

Immediately engrossing and incredibly well written, The Lotus Bearer is one of the best stories you can find on RR.  I also feel confident that it will probably be able to do decently well in traditional publishing, so maybe read now while you have the chance.
Expect a progression through a gritty fantasy world, but most of all a great cast of characters.

The story has been intriguing. The world building and focus on character building of the characters in the story is very detailed. It brings to life the motivations of the different characters, their moral dilemnas and show why they become who they are. It can be slow moving at times but its definitely worth a read.

I was lucky enough to read this book in beta and have completed all of book 1.
This book hooked me immediately by introducing a world that was interesting without over explaining. The book does a fantastic job of world building naturally within the story without using long/boring lore dumps.
The characters are extremely well written and all seem to have a clear/different voice/worldview. I loved the dual timeline aspect which highlighted character growth and changes. Every POV character is unique and adds to the overall narrative in interesting ways. I especially enjoyed the Iris chapters as you could see her reasoning for her decisions along with how she changed over time.
As there are several characters, it can be a lot to meet some of new characters near the beginning of the story. However, the author does a great job of giving the characaters natural differentiations that make for a rewarding read as you spend more time with the characters.
Overall, this was a fantastic read that I highly recommend. The characters, world, and overall narrative make for a rewarding experience. I am very much looking forward to continuing the series.

I've gotten hooked on this grim/dark fantasy. Even after the lead character turned out to be no so nice, I continued to read, because the story drew me in: a highly polarized civilization, ambition, a desire for vengence. What could go wrong?
Turns out, a lot could go very, very wrong. But not much is wrong with this story. The editing is impecable, and the prose is terrific with the rare opaque sentence. I love the non-linear structure; the author inserts scenes from the past to explain the present and doesn't rely on info dumps. The settings are vivid, the action scenes are cinematic, and the story is intriguing. The world seems preindustrial entering a steam-punk like era and magic abounds. Both the magic, and the problems caused by the magic are well constructed. And no magic or technology is overpowered or infinite which adds interesting twists and obstacles to the character's lives.
The characters are many and come alive, but if you're like me, and need to bond with a relatable character, you'll need to read for a while. Because the situation is so dire, most people have gone over to the dark side. However, the author allows glimmers of light to seep through and gives his characters enough backstory to explain their unpleasant behaviour.
It's a grim/dark tale, so expect off the cuff violence (but not much gore, and no open door sex so far).
