:p - Don PenguiniRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Everything is pretty good so far. The style is enjoyable, the story is believable, the grammar is near flawless, and the characters are not shallow.
Dave has some issues with predicting the consequences of his actions, but I'd say it's a realistic character trait, especially for someone who isn't exactly used to this life. Some sad stuff happens, but note the lack of a grimdark tag on this fic.
Slight spoilers pertaining to skills:
Dave looks like he'll be pretty strong eventually, but even once/if he picks up a total of three Unique skills, he won't utterly break the setting. The first Unique is one he starts with, which helps with skill acquisition. The other two will be quest rewards, one of which will allow him to cast a temporary debuff and the other which will allow him to make use of a temporary buff, both of which have a long cooldown. Unique skills don't level, so I don't see how these would ever make the protagonist too OP, though there are certainly plenty of situations in which they could turn the tide.
Spoilers regarding his class and its consequences:
The class Dave gets (you'll never guess what it is) is unlocked by him telling some god/demon/whatever that the classes he has available all suck, and said entity decides to just give him a Rare class at the cost of him not being allowed to leave the forest until he kills an OP beast. That would be the poor risk assessment of our MC kicking in. Afterwards, though, the entity is a bit too helpful in making things easier for Dave. My suspension of disbelief is still in effect because we don't really know the entity's motivations, but the entity straight-up breaks the setting's rules by making it easy for Dave to check his status at will, where others need a tool to do so. It's a bit concerning, but not a problem yet. As the author has recently pointed out, not much worldbuilding can be done at this point in the story. We don't know whether there are more people like Dave somewhere around. Certainly, the ent - GoopySnooperRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The past few days I have been reading The Lonely Scout, and let me tell you, this is one addicting read. The start had me intruiged but I had not thought much of it, but next thing I know, I'm 5 chapters in and continuing. I HIGHLY recommend this read, it's a very promising start for Smiff!
- raffi_ajemRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is one of the best stories I've read on this site and it keeps getting better with every chapter. I started it yesterday and couldn't put it down. The writing style and overall storyline work great together and I can't wait to see how the story progesses. For Smiff's first story this is amazing, and I definitely recommend giving it a read.
- CAL111Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Pretty solid so far, the characters are decently described, still not sure on the main characters age or appearance beside the brown hair and brown eyes. The story is fast paced and the system is simple but interesting. Overall it has a lot of potential, personally I enjoy mc that are mostly solo with rogue skills. I would definitely recommend reading it.
- MacmanRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Yeah, really enjoying this story, despite it being a first attempt at a story. I've read quite alot of online fiction and its a solid start that has made it into my follows and hopefully can grow to a favourite. It really just needs some people with more skill than me to pickup on errors or tighten up the flow of the story. A couple of places I felt like the dialogue was along the lines of OMG a human, this guys is a bit oblivious, I should tell him everything he should know. Every chapter contans a character split, like taking the point of view from a different character to advance the backround plot, alot of people dont like this in storys but this one does it from the start as opposed to other storys where the main character is the 1st 100 chapters then a disconnect by taking another point of view. The earlier character flips had potential to be humourous but as the story go's on I've been growing bored of reading the last few paragraphs due to the change in character, either its too much or its just too samey for each chapter, I dunno.
I had a couple of misgivings the first time and the comments were taking on hence the update.
I need you to read this story because I'm selfish, I need to see how it turns out which means I need the author to continue and grow, for that I need you.....or someone else...Anyone really, just get on it. - KiwiknightRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5Our MC dies idiotically, wakes in a fantasy forest of magical beasts, elves, and royal intrigue. Standard so far, but plenty of very good stories start just the same way before branching off later to do their own thing, so I gave it a chance and read 8 chapters. Overall it's good for a first story and has potential, but needs a few fixes and some polishing to compete with the RR heavyweights.
It's definitely entertaining, and I like the world, the characters, and the style of having two narrators. We immediately have a local perspective to explore the native culture of the new world, but on the other hand there is less mystery/suspense since the reader now knows a lot more about the world than the MC does. There are issues with the MC though, that take me out of the story. Firstly being that he has almost no emotional response to being killed and finding himself reborn.
Although the story summary says 'progress that feels earned rather than gifted', the very first time the MC encounters the system, guess what, he is meeting with a mysterious god-like entity who is giving him special rewards for no reason as usual. Even before this, he stumbles into a deadly enemy that everyone else is terrified of, but for some unexplained reason, he just happens to have an immunity to the enemy and can ignore it.
He acts and makes decisions with no concern for his own safety, accepting a binding quest to kill a 'legendary' enemy while he has absolutely no training or combat experience. He somehow fixes a broken bow by tying the pieces together with a piece of vine. Suspension of disbelief is a funny thing, I'm perfectly willing to believe in isekai and magic and monsters, but a broken bow fixed perfectly by a vine is what goes too far, especially for an office worker MC who has most likely never used a bow or touched a vine in his life. - xcaresRoyal Road★★ 1.5Blundering idiot mc. Unbelievable artificial plot. Reads more like a parody of isekai that failed to be funny.
It's a rare "gem" that can force a bored man to drop out at chapter 4.
